The Mister and I are pretty avid cyclists---we have nine bikes in our home right now...and one motorcycle! We both enjoy eating food we can't pronounce (language doesn't really matter) and going places we've never been. We currently reside in rural Wisconsin, enjoying the cheese and beer it has to offer, and getting outside whenever we can!
About Miss Aardvark

Hello, hive! You are probably wondering who we are and why you should care. Well, I will answer the first question easily enough in the coming paragraphs, and the second one really depends on what you are looking for. If you happen to be planning a wedding, looking for fun/cheap crafty ideas, and/or are a sucker for a sweet (and salty) love story, stay tuned! The Aardvarks have quite the adventure for you!

Who Are These People? or Our First Date : wedding beaver dam relationships Dscn252 DSCN252

This is Salty at a cyclocross race…on his mountain bike.

I had been looking for a creative outlet for a while (because my ever-growing list of wedding crafts just wasn’t cutting it?) and decided since I have something of interest to blog about (my upcoming wedding and subsequent marriage) that I would let go of my techno-phobe ways and get into this newfangled blogging craze. OK, so maybe it’s not that new…but I am a bit of a Luddite and am slow to jump on some (but not all) bandwagons. I am only slightly less behind the curve than Mr. Aardvark, who does not have a Facebook page (gasp!). However, he works in IT and I can’t really blame him for not wanting to spend any unnecessary time in front of a computer.

Besides being slow to the social wonders of the internet, we are very outdoorsy-type people. We met over three years ago when we both joined the same cycling club. At the time we were living in the vast prairie space of middle America where “towns” consist of a gas station and a grain elevator, and cities are like islands in a sea of corn/soybeans. We actually met on Valentine’s Day at an indoor bike race. (It’s about as exciting as it sounds.)

The whole spring and summer, driving back and forth across the US in search of bike races, proved a good way to get to know each other, and by fall there were some serious sparks flying…

The fire did not start right away, though; you see, Mr. Aardvark was a bit shy. I had been (shamelessly) flirting with him for most of the summer to no avail. I even went as far as to profess my like to him via email in late August…only to receive a brief and somewhat awkward reply, followed by radio silence. I had all but given up on the idea of dating him when in October, in a last-ditch, “going down swinging” effort, I posted to the team boards asking if anyone wanted to go mountain biking at “such and so” state park.

Now, it just so happens that Mr. A was the only one on the cycling team who lived anywhere near said park. He was also one of the few on the team that rode mountain bike at all. If he did not put the dots together on this one, all hope would be lost and any chance of our couple-ship would vanish forever! Spoiler alert: you are reading our wedding blog. He accepted the request! And we went on what he considers our first date. I do not consider it a first date, however, because, I was so unsure of his interest/intentions. Also there was no food involved. (A date needs food, right?) I almost bailed thinking it had been a pity play on his part. Thank goodness I didn’t!

Next time: Our real first date!

Do you and your SO have any disagreements or gray areas in regard to your first date?

I’m so excited to follow your story and get to know you through the blog! I’m a rural Wisconsin bride as well (Green Bay area, but currently living in Madison). It’s good to see fellow midwesterners! Can’t wait to read about your “real” first date. :)

Boy, do I understand rocky and confused-intention starts! I knew Mr. Kettle liked me, but I couldn’t say how much tip months after we met. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of your story.

Haha, love the “spoiler alert.” And fiance and I started hanging out everyday before we got together. We actually decided to be “boyfriend and girlfriend” before we went on a date, but we consider our “first date” to be our first meal.

Oh, we totally still disagree about our first date. I say it’s Jan 30th, 2009 when we hung out from 5pm to 1am, but he swears it wasn’t until the week after because he didn’t officially “ask me on a date” until we were driving around at about 9pm on the 30th. :-) Ah, such fun times!

Haha, yes I have lots of confusion! The second time I met Mr. FC ever, he picked me up in a car and took me to a photo museum and then dinner at his parents house. Seems like a first date, right? But we didn’t let each other know we liked one another for another 8 months, and it was another 10 months before we actually considered we should start dating… so it’s a very blurry line of “first date”. Friends go on dates and then start dating later… right??

I’m glad Mr. A put the dots together and got his butt out the door! Otherwise we wouldn’t have you here! :) Can’t wait to read about the “real” first date!

What a cute story! If you ask my sweetie our 1st date was in 1994 when we rode to prom together in the same limo. No he wasn’t my date. No I didn’t have any clue that he liked me. I kinda had a crush on him but he didn’t know that either. I think our first date was 15 years later in 2009 but what do I know? :D

He came from long island to visit me in central jersey. We were supposed to go to six flags, but never actually made it. Instead, we hung out on my porch and talked for hours. We call that our first “date” and then when we were finally at college together, he took me to dinner and a movie, so we call that our first “real date” lol. I didn’t know there were so many people out there like us who can’t really decide what constitutes a “first date”! Love this post!

Okay, the first thing I noticed about you is how much you use parenthesis! I AM ADDICTED to parenthesis. Seriously, I should see a professional (parenthesis professionals? I doubt.)

@K8.1985, I do totally use a lot of parenthesis… Sometimes (not often) I think it may be too much… But that is the way my brain works. Glad to see I’m not alone! :)
