Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. Wedding Funkalunk

September 20th, 2011 @ 9:21 am by Miss Porcupine

I’ve been in a real wedding funk lately. Now that most of our vendors are booked, it’s time for the details. And, honestly, this is stressing me out more than anything. There are so many little things to decide on/iron out (song choices, place cards, guestbook, favors, etc.). And, most importantly of the detail woes, we have to somehow find the time with our insane, busy schedules (plus the future hubs’s annoying work schedule) to make a trip down to Pennsylvania so that I can test out hair salons and we can do a menu tasting.

The tasting has been a huge source of annoyance for me. Our caterer/venue requires the menu choice for each guest to be decided upon before the wedding. This means I can’t order my invitations without knowing what to tell the guests the menu options are. I could, in theory, order the invitations and get the menu-card inserts later, but I live in pointless fear that the invitation I choose will get discontinued, leaving me without matching menu inserts. (I know, I know…the horror.)

My hair/makeup trial has been my biggest concern. Finding a salon in a place where I don’t live has made me feel sick to my stomach. My problem is, I have BIG HAIR that many people can’t style well. I also have a large wedding party (plus moms, aunts, etc.), so I need to find an affordable salon that can handle 12 or more women’s hair/makeup needs the day of the wedding. I have found that a lot of the salons in the area are pricey (as in more expensive than what I pay for a NYC haircut) and tiny!

On top of all this, I have two very good friends getting married in the next few months. I find myself more excited for their weddings. The idea of just going to a wedding and having fun without having to worry about how I look, how much the guests are enjoying the day, or whether things are going to fall through the cracks is much more appealing to me than dealing with my own wedding.

I know it will all come together, but right now it just makes me want to go sit on my couch and watch Jail.

Has anyone else hit the wedding funk?

Yes. But you know what? Soon enough, you’ll be doing more than you ever imagined, and you won’t have time to feel funky! It will all come together, believe me.

are there any hair schools near where you’re going to be getting married? there’s one near me that offers some amazing prices, they’re open early on weekends and they have a full staff because it’s all the students getting their salon floor hours in. {and from what I’ve been told, it’s the girls that are just about to graduate doing the work, not ones who just started or anything lol} that might be something to look into. good luck!

I hear you on the hair front - I also live in NYC and am getting married elsewhere, and it is SO stressful to have to find somewhere you’ve never used before! Good luck!

I am in the same place. All the big details are done. We are also working on the little things I have just under 5 months to my day, so every weekend FI and I work on a few task at a time. don’t stress your self out make a list of things that need to get done rank them in order of priority or time sensitivity and go from there. do a little bit each day/week and realize that its a big task and you’ll make it… No one ever said planning a wedding would be easy…

as for the hair ask around, check out yelp or just call some salons and talk to the stylist and ask questions. you’ll find someone that will work perfect for you it just takes time and patience…

good luck my dear!

I am sooo in that funk now. Same thing… all the BIG items are taken care of… but for some reason alll those minor details are stressing me out. All I want to do is curl up on my couch with a good book and turn off my phone. (The RSVP’s are coming in thorugh my phone… lol)

If it helps, I got married at Riverdale, and my bridal party and I had our hair done at Robert’s Hair Design on Greenfield Road. It was about 5 minutes from R-dale. My mom paid for it, so I’m not sure how much it cost, but I’m fairly certain it was reasonably priced. I was happy with my hair and the people there were very nice.

Another option would be to explore hairstylists who will come to you… Maybe you could find two or three and then your bridal party could get their hair done in the hotel where you’re all staying?

Hi there. Just got back from our wedding and honeymoon and wanted to let you know that it will work out. Everything. I remember getting to this stress, which was made all the more stressful by having a destination wedding, and at that point the wedding planning stopped being fun. It became a drag and I began questioning the whole point of having a wedding. And you know what…it came together beautifully and even when stuff didn’t work out the exact way I thought or I realized I had forgotten to plan/organize for something, it didn’t matter. We were getting married and that made the day magical in itself. And some advice is to take a few days off of wedding planning, or see even if for the hair salon trial, you can take a friend instead of the FH. Hang in there, it’ll be great and worth all this :) Hugs!!

I have had several wedding funks, and we’re 8+ months out. Mine stem from my fiance being deployed and money concerns. What snaps me back is that he’ll be home in a few months, and we don’t have to pay every single penny at the instant my crisis sets in. Keep calm and carry on. And drink wine.

I’ve totally been there :) Be easy on yourself, you still have time. I gave myself a month off 5 months out to clear the bridal blues. Now I’m in full press mode, it will all get done. And what doesn’t, no one will know but me. Good luck, it will work out!

I have had various wedding party funks, and that we’re also 8+ several weeks available. My very own base coming from my own fiance remaining started and funds worries. Exactly what photos me personally back is the fact that he / she’lmost all often be zero in several months, so we have on’to should pay just about every penny in the immediate our problems makes its presence felt. Hold tranquil as well as carry on. And take in wine beverage.

@siimplycraziie: Good idea. I will look into that. Not too familiar with the area (but I need to be quickly)
@Jill: Thanks for the suggestion. I will check the salon out.
@Future Army Wife: Drink wine, indeed. All the best to your fiance on his deployment. Hope he can get back home soon!

Hi Miss Porcupine

I’m a PA girl originally (now living in the city) and I just got married in the Harrisburg area. I used Tim @ Orbit Hair Salon and would highly recommend him! It would be a bit of a shlep from Lancaster, but he also works off-site. He (and his associate) did an AMAZING job, and they were able to handle my group of 12 in ~ 4 hours. I don’t remember his number off-hand, but if you google “tim orbit hair salon Harrisburg,” I’m positive he’ll pop up! Good luck!!
