About Mrs. Teacup

When super excited, I relax my Midwest sensibility and default to West Coast vernacular. Forgive me, but to properly start I can’t help saying…

DUDES!

The DIY project I’m about to share was hands down the most fun, affordable and quick to assemble. I’m talking about providing entertainment for the 20 or so children we expect as guests.

A few Bees from past generations shared their cute ideas for kiddie activity bags, including Mrs. LoxMrs. Toucan and Mrs. Martini. For ours, I’ll begin with the price.

I spent $34 to create 24 of these fun little surprises. Yay for the budget! No lie, each completed bag cost a whopping $1.41 each. That’s right, one dollar and forty-one cents. Can you even get a cup of Starbucks drip coffee for that price?

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Easy peasy and cute to boot!

Inspiration struck while browsing Michaels last week. They have an aisle of “Fun Finds” that were on sale for 70% off. Most of these party favor toys retail for $1 and I looked for packages with multiples to stretch my 30 cents to the max. I love a bargain!

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Sunglasses 2pk = 15 cents per pair

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Couldn’t resist testing them out. What can I say? It was a late night.

A Great Day to be a Kid -

3-D puzzles, 6 per box. I broke them up and put 3 different puzzles in a bag = 15 cents each

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Kazoos. I love it when kids make noise! 4 pk = 8 cents each

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Activity books, 6pk = 5 cents each

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Sticker books, 12 pages per book. On clearance for 79 cents = 7 cents a sheet

A Great Day to be a Kid -

64 crayon box for $1 = 2 cents each

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Smaller sized kraft bags, $4.99 for 13 = 42 cents each

Notice Ollie in the background inspecting my assembly. He’s an excellent supervisor, just ask him. And the surfboard in the background is actually wedding related. You’ll have to wait until my next post to hear about that…

Back to the bags; we’re almost finished. A quick stop to the Dollar Tree rounded out the loot.

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Krazy Straws, 6pk = 17 cents

Mini pinball games, 8pk = 13 cents each

(I neglected to take a photo, oops)

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Cinnamon graham crackers, 6pk = 17 cents each

A Great Day to be a Kid -

Token photo of furry cuteness—Ollie feels neglected!

Mr. Hot Tea and I come from extended Filipino families, which meant that an adults-only reception was never an option for us. Kids actually make up 10% of the guest list. I’m happy to be able to provide them with an unexpected present to keep their attention occupied (at least through dinner) and hopefully avoid any early munchkin meltdowns.

Were kiddie activity bags part of your DIY project list? Maybe you’re contemplating adding them now? Feel free to share your enthusiasm or at least tell me you’re running to Michaels to scour the Fun Find bins. Happy hunting!

Those are wonderful! But for the sanity of the kids’ parents, I suggest you consider taking out the kazoos.

WOW. Our kiddie table is just going to have random odds and ends thrown on it that I’ve collected during our planning. What you made is so much cooler!!

That is so cool! I’m BEYOND impressed with how little you were able to spend on such an awesome project. I sort of let kid’s buckets get the better of me and spent WAY more than originally anticipated.

This is a great idea! I was very hesitant to inviting kids to our reception because I think they will be terribly bored, but this is a great way to keep them busy.

These are adorable! It makes me wish we were having kids at our wedding! I will now be on a mission to make friends with small tots for the next 8 months just so I can copy your adorable bags :-)

@HBanan: It’s a Hot Tea tradition to buy noisy toys for his nieces and nephews :)

Thanks for all the happy comments, it feels good to be helpful with this little DIY!

Oh my goodness. Your kiddie bags are amazingly full for such an amazingly low price. What ages are the kids that you are providing these bags for? I have a small number of under 18 “kids” coming to the wedding, but am not sure who needs a kiddie bag.

@lisamarieloves: I had our guests indicate how many children were K-6th grade in order to plan for our kid’s meals. I’m using that same number and will put out a sign with the bags to articulate who they are intended for.

I’m going to do kiddie bags because all my married friends have kids. I like the idea of scouring the clearance aisle. I’m also hoping to switch the bridal suite to a kid zone to get them out of the way.

Cute, cute idea. And what a freakin’ bargain you got! I work for publishing in children’s so I am looking to stock up on things people throw off into the “take” pile. :)

These are fantastic! Though I must say you are brave putting in kazoos. There are people on this site who don’t want kids at their wedding because they make too much noise, and you are right on the opposite end of the spectrum giving them noise makers! Lol, don’t be too surprised if some of them get ‘lost’ or ‘broken’ by parents during the night, that always seemed to happen to my noisy toys as a kid… :)

Also I may steal this idea, We are having about 15 kids at our wedding which is about 10% of the guest list too. I can’t wait, kids are so cute at weddings.

So cute and even better they’re so cheap! I love kiddies so there will be awesome bags even if I had 1 kid - which I won’t :)

OH man, what a great deal! I am so impressed Miss Tea Cup! I wish we had more than two kids coming to warrant making something like these, but I’d neeever in a million years find prices like that in Swiss land. Well done!

I’m a kindergarten teacher and give my students those straws for their birthdays and the star-shaped glasses for our end-of-year field trip every year. Great deals!
