About Mrs. Skunk

Fat Guy in a Little Coat

September 21st, 2011 @ 6:20 am by Mrs. Skunk

Just about the same time that I met Mr. Skunk, I also bought a condo here in the city. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure one of our first dates was me making him help me move. In any case, I was ready to settle myself and my puppy down. The condo was a foreclosure in really good condition, and the first-time-home-buyer tax incentive was still in effect. The stars aligned and I found myself with 920 square feet to do whatever I wanted to.

Yes, I drew a floor plan. And yes, it is exact. One unit = one foot.

Since I moved in, I decided it was a little too lonely, so I have a roommate in the second bedroom. She manages a restaurant within walking distance, so it’s been a good fit for her, too. So right now we’re nice and cozy with us two and my dog.

However, post wedding Mr. Skunk will be moving in. With his two cats. (That’s another post for a different day…) Because I’m still under the first-time-home-buyer tax-credit stipulations, I have to live here as my primary residence until late April.

It is indeed going to be a tight squeeze. I’m looking on the bright side of things, though. It’s going to help us save money in the long run (i.e., collecting rent, not having to pay the gubment back $8,000, splitting bills three ways) and get us more prepared for buying a house. Have any of you had less than ideal living situations post wedding? Or even pre wedding?

When we were dating we were long-distance, about a 5-hour drive away from each other. After our engagement my fiance moved to the west coast from the east coast because of work (he’s in the Navy). Now he is deployed and will be coming back in time for our wedding. And after we are married, I won’t be able to move in with him until I finish grad school, sometime around our 2nd wedding anniversary.
Less than ideal, but our relationship is worth it, so we make it work!

I lived in an apartment with two girls in college. One summer, my husband (then boyfriend) wanted to move in with me so he could go to summer school. He and I thought it would be no big deal, he’d help with the rent and bills, etc. But we got into a heated argument with the roommates about how the rent breakdown would go (should he pay exactly 1/4 even though he and I would be sharing a room?) Just make sure your roommate is on the same page when it comes to expectations of money, bills and general upkeep (cleaning, cooking, entertaining) and you should be fine.

I wish we had 900 square feet to live in right now, we bought a bachelor condo back in 2007, 465 square feet to be exact (it was supposed to be a quick flip back when the market was really hot here in Edmonton) but, we were very unlucky, I think we all know what happened next! Now its just sitting here waiting for someone to buy it and we’re stuck here until someone does : ( We’ve learned a VERY HARD lesson about real estate, can’t wait to move on!

Right now I live in a house with 3 other roommates and he lives about 50 minutes away with his family. It is definitely less than ideal. We are planning on getting out own place when my lease is up in july, right before our wedding. We were just talking last night about how exhausting it is getting to be. We both essentially live out of a bag. One night at his house, one night at mine, repeat repeat. I can’t wait until we can just settle down and have our own space.

Same boat except mine is 600 sq. feet. I have no idea how we’re going to fit all of his stuff in my place including his two bikes. We may have to get a storage unit.

My fiance and I live upstairs in his brother’s house. It’s super fun because he’s single and we live in the bonus room with slanted ceilings. We also have another male roommate who is also single. Me with three men (and thankfully three bathrooms).

Why aren’t you asking the roommate to move out? I had a renter for a while and when my now-fiance decided to move in, I gave her notice. Totally understand if it’s a money thing, but if you can swing it, I would have given her 2, 3, 4 months notice! Besides, I kinda find it odd she didn’t automatically look for a place once given the impending doom of bunking with newlyweds!!!

@weirdfishes: Oh my! I’ll quit complaining now!

@Candace: She was actually hesitant. But the issue is that once the first time home buyers waiting period is up, we definitely plan on moving out. That’ll be less than six months after Mr. Skunk moves in. The roommate is happy with the current living situation because she manages a restaurant within walking distance and usually doesn’t get off until 1am. Once we do move out, she’s wanting to take over the full rent, so rather than having her move out and back in, we’ll just keep her around and have some extra income.
