DIY Hair I: Curls

September 22nd, 2011 @ 3:16 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

Even though I have someone scheduled to do my hair, I’m a paranoid bride-monster convinced that something dire will happen to my hair stylist and I’ll wind up being responsible for my own hair on the wedding day. (The horrors!)

Most days, my hair is hastily bundled up in one of two clips that I own.

Here you can see I didn’t even get the clip all the way onto the bun. Funnel Cake Fail!

With the wedding approaching and my paranoia mounting, I have been trying to learn ways to do my own hair that look, well… nice. Because frankly, hair in the clip-bun is not-so-nice. Up first on the list of hair-dos are curls.

Curls have been evading my locks for years, as my semi-curly, no-longer-straight hair decides to settle into an awkward wave. Usually, the harder I try to curl my hair, the straighter it winds up. Curling irons and curlers are no help. However, I believe I have now figured out a semi-reliable way to ensure I have curls that last ALL day. You wanna know how?

Step 1: Wash your hair and towel dry. I stole Mr. Funnel Cake’s bathrobe for this step. Detangle your hair and part your hair with a comb.

Step 2: Let your hair air dry for about an hour. (This is important!) I watched a movie. Don’t let your hair dry all the way! It’s important that your roots are not soaking wet, but they need to be damp.

Step 3: With your semi-wet hair, lightly spray with hair spray and twist your hair around your finger. Wind the hair all the way up.

Step 4: Slide your finger out and pin the curl on your head. Secure with a bobby pin (or two).

Step 5: Repeat step 4 all around your hair until the head is done. If your lower hair is drying too fast, spray with a leave-in conditioner to lightly re-wet before winding. This part probably took me around 15 minutes.

Step: 6: Spray your whole head lightly with hair spray. Admire your awesome ’do and go watch another movie (or tweeze your eyebrows like me). I usually let my hair set for the rest of the night before I go to bed. Feel free to cook, watch movies, or go visit friends and subject yourself to laughter. I usually have the curls in for at least three hours before bedtime.

Step 7: Before going to bed, take all the bobby pins out and take joy in the frighteningly springy curls bouncing off your head. Go to sleep.

Step 8: The next morning, your hair will still look similar to last night. Use your fingers to comb the curls out and use bobby pins to style your hair away from your face. if your hair is frizzy, comb a little on top with the brush but try not to comb through the curls and ruin them. Revel in your amazing curls!

While I was at work with the hair above, I was actually asked by two different people if I had had a hair trial done for my wedding. The curls just look that much better than my clip-bun. When I got home from work, I decided to try and quickly pile the hair on my head for an up-do.

It’s not perfect, but I think for an amateur “hair stylist” that this is pretty OK. I threw in my sparkly hair clip for added “wow” effect.

DIY Hair I: Curls : wedding columbus hair trial 110121 11012

The curls were so strong that I slept on them a second night and the next day I enjoyed curly hair again with my hair piled up high. Again, people asked me if I had a hair trial done. When I got home, I threw in the veil to see if this is a contender for my “emergency hair styling”.

The tricky part of this hair style is making sure your hair is the right level of dampness when you put the curls in. If it’s too wet, your hair will still be damp the next day, even if you sleep with the bobby pins in. (Which is uncomfortable.) If you don’t wet it enough, the curls won’t hold their shape and your hair will be flat as the day it grew out. I am not sure I trust this style enough for the W-day, but it’s certainly nice to have a great hair day at work once in awhile.

Do you have any emergency plans for your hair if your stylist bails? If you’re doing your own hair for the wedding, share your hair style! I’d love to hear what you guys are planning!

What an awesome tutorial!!! Thank you so much Miss FC! I can’t wait to try this. It looks so good - you have one heck of a back-up plan! :-)

I just bought something called the Topstyler that does this in 10 minutes! Hair has to be completely dry so there’s no guess work and they really hold ALL DAY on my thick, naturally pin straight hair. They use the same finger-curl technique that you did. I know it totally sounds like I work for them, but I swear I don’t!! I saw it on an infomercial at 3am once and I’m hooked. You don’t have to worry about frizzy curls from sleeping on them all night. Check out the website..I think it’s just topstyler.com. (Again, I swear I don’t work for them!!!)

I was terrified that I was going to have to come up with a hair plan B when my stylist showed up 15 minutes late on our wedding day. Your hair looks fantastic!

Ugh so jealous right now. Your hair curls fantastically. My hair can’t hold a curl longer than about an hour without going sad and flat. Great job!

That’s pretty awesome for the bobby-pin method! Every time I try it, it comes out floppy and awkward. Now, I try spritzing in a little sea-salt spray as it dries, so the curls hold a bit better.

For the wedding, though, I got a blow-out. It was so delightfully curly and luxurious, I wanted to get one every day! It was cheaper than I was expecting, too, so I was able to do a trial without any wallet guilt….!

I’m so jealous your pincurls turned out so awesome! Mine just turn out kind of blah even if I sleep in them.

Wow, you’re talented. I have yet to successfully keep curl in my hair. And nobody will be able to tell if you have to do your own hair for the wedding.

You can also try small hair rollers - same process, partial dry hair, hair spray, sleep on it. We used to do that for me all the time when I was younger and you get a slightly ‘cleaner’ curl than the bobby pin (done that too :) and it lasts for a couple days. Love that hairstyle on you!

I think you are correct, the tricky part is making sure your hair is the right level of dampness when you put the curls in. Your hair is great!
