Miss Porcupine's Picture
Miss Porcupine, NYC/Lancaster, PA Age and Occupation: 26, Sales Coordinator/Publishing Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Assistant Manager/Sales Engagement Date: August 8, 2010 Wedding Date: March 2012 Venue: Riverdale Manor About Me: I'm a born and bred New Yorker with a love/hate relationship for the city I have always called home. Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. The future hubs and I met in college, settled in New York, and decided to go with a rustic/peacock infused wedding in Lancaster, PA, right near his hometown. Come the big day, we will be together 5 years, and we're looking forward to making it official!
About Miss Porcupine

Bling, Blam, Broke

September 22nd, 2011 @ 1:58 pm by Miss Porcupine

With the wedding rapidly approaching and the nightmares setting in (you know the ones—the I forgot to get my hair and makeup done before the wedding kinda sweet dreams), I figure this is as good a time as any to cross the major necessities off the list. One of those would be the wedding bands. Purchasing those suckers is right up there on the importance scale with making sure Mr. Porcupine has pants!

Mr. Porcupine and I have barely done a drop of research on wedding rings. Neither of us is a big jewelry person. I’m all about the costume jewels. There is something about wearing expensive jewelry that gives me agita. I would lose my head if it weren’t attached to my body, and it’s far too easy for me to fling off rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc. without even noticing. It took me months to get used to wearing my engagement ring. I only “lost” it about 80 times (AKA it flipped around my finger or was on my bedside table) before I realized I am a lunatic and need to chillax.

One very bored day Mr. Porcupine and I wandered into Zales on our way home from running errands. I looked through the glass cases blankly. They all looked fine to me. I actually contemplated just picking a ring and buying it right then and there. Mr. Porcupine is pretty simple, too, with what he wants in a ring. He wants a black/white-gold band. Affordable and easy to find at most jewelers.

And then, el major problemo. My ring is platinum—close enough to white gold (ya know…the cheaper option that will allow us to keep buying food), right? Apparently, WRONG. I tried on a few white-gold bands and noticed that the gold looked BLINDINGLY bright next to the platinum. I tried diamond bands and plain bands. A whole array of bands! Everything looked a bit off to me.

Maybe it’s just me, but to my eye platinum has a darker hint to it than gold does. I was always told this isn’t true since platinum is described as being a pure, white metal. It wasn’t until I learned that white gold isn’t actually white (I really thought it was…sue me…but it’s actually a combination of gold and white metals dipped in rhodium to make it look shiny and white) that I realized why platinum looks different. White gold looks extra shiny since it’s dipped in shiny, happy, jolly rhodium. Platinum, usually, is just chillin’ in its natural state.

I didn’t ask for or expect a platinum engagement ring. Mr. Porcupine just went for it. Something about prong strength convinced him. (All I know about rings still remains at lalala shiny and bright.) Although an awesome pick, the engagement ring was something Mr. Porcupine had been saving a long time for. Saving for our wedding bands isn’t something I really planned on doing. Stupid, I know—this is my WEDDING ring after all. I figured we’d get something affordable and upgrade one day in the future. They make anniversary bands for a reason, after all.

When I got home from our Zales excursion, I Googled “platinum diamond bands” and wanted to barf when I saw that some of the lowest prices were in the $1,000–$1,200 range. Blashphemorous! I continued to Google through the interwebs, and it turns out I’m not really supposed to notice the difference when pairing a white-gold ring with a platinum one. Lame. I swear I saw it!

We definitely needed to take a second look at a different jeweler to get a better idea. I’m sure whatever I end up with will be fine, but I realize it might not be as cut and dried as I assumed. On the bright side, I am not super picky about my jewelry, and I’m willing to go with the more affordable option if I can’t find a platinum ring at the right price.

Were you able to find your “perfect” wedding band? Did you have to go with a second-choice option for the sake of saving some bucks?

Considering how expensive gold is right now, there should be very little price difference between the 2. So go platinum and have a matching set :)

You are not alone, I can see the difference in the two metals as well. I know whatever you end up with will be beautiful!

This might not be the classiest choice, but I got my wedding ring on overstock.com. FI also bought me a platinum ring without my input, so I made it a goal to find the least expensive platinum ring for now (also so I could upgrade later) and got mine for under $300 (just a plain 2mm platinum band). I can tell it’s not quite as high quality as my brilliant earth engagement ring, but it still looks nice next to it and didn’t break the bank. I would also recommend checking amazon (or just generally doing a google shopping search).

It’s true, while platinum is more expensive, the difference between the value of gold right now is probably the smallest it will ever be. So if that helps justify the purchase :-) Also, consider contacting a pawn shop that has a jeweler–my fiance is a gemologist at a small family owned pawn shop and you have two options there. 1) you can get a screaming deal on a used one, which may or may not be for everyone but 2) most pawn shops can also order at wholesale from the same places zales and any other jewelry store does but have less mark up which equals savings for you! I got the engagement ring I wanted all brand new for only a fraction of the price it would have been in a retail jewelry store even though my ring is just as new as theirs. Hope that helps and good luck!

Lucky for me, my engagement ring came with a matching wedding band. The only issue is that the wedding band is beveled to match the e-ring, so I can’t wear it alone (though it’s pave diamonds and gorgeous). I’ve been contemplating getting a straight across band but don’t want to spend the money.

Check out palladium! It’s in the same family as platinum and it’s a white metal so it doesn’t yellow as the plating wears off. On top of that it runs about the same prices as 18k white gold (or it did when I got my ring at the beginning of the year). Zales has them but you typically have to order them online or have the store order it since they don’t keep much in stock. I was able to select the exact size (I’m a 7.25 so it was nice not to have to get the have get it resized liek I normally do) and I picked out the fit, shape, width, everything. Mine is a plain band but the have other bands with stones in them.

I second palladium. I’ve had my engagement ring for 3 years and the band for almost 2 years and they look wonderful and have held up well - even with my job of unloading trucks. It is a much more affordable option without sacrificing quality. And no one can tell the difference.

I have a friend that has a white gold ring and band and she has to get them replated every so often. She was the one that steared me away from white gold as an option.

I know exactly where you’re coming from! I also was retarded about this whole rhodium thing! And I went through the same process, because my honey got me a platinum engagement ring and a platinum wedding band was going to be crazy expensive. Now, I realize before I say this that it’s not going to help you at all, and I’m sorry, but our jeweler makes a practice of giving their platinum bands the same rhodium coating, so the white gold and the platinum actually do look exactly the same. We totally lucked out because the wedding band I wanted didn’t come in platinum… plus, if it did, it would have been like $500 more expensive. So I would say that unless you want your engagement ring coated in rhodium, bite the bullet and go into debt :) Not helpful I know, sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I am not happy with the fact that we had to settle with white gold, so I say avoid the not-happy feelings.

I have a platinum engagement ring and a palladium wedding band. No joke, looks identical and half the weight/price. The only thing I’ve noticed is that they scratch eachother where both the rings sit. Granted, no one can see it, but I wear them the same way everyday so both sides don’t get scratched. Seriously, check out palladium. I’m happy I did :)

i really wanted the matching band to my e-ring and when my husband and i went shopping we set a limit at $500 each for wedding bands…well my matching eternity band was 1200! and the half eternity was 800! way above our budget - his was easy, i was able to find the perfect band for just under $500 and for mine we were able to match it close enough with a half eternity band (white gold) for $400. I could tell a difference between the ering band and wedding band at first but since i’ve been wearing them for a little over 7 months i have gotten used to it and they look beautiful together.

@Margarita: That’s what I thought too. I was so so surprised in the price gap!
@jacinda10: Wow, thank you!
@Amber: Glad I am not the only one who can see it!
@Jen: Ah, I love OS. I realize I never shared a pic of my ring, but because of the diamonds in my band it’s hard to tell online how they will look paired up with other diamond bands. Such a pain in my neck!
@kristine.kraft: I am sooo clueless about jewels, I never even heard of palladium.

Since the bright WG is not your thing, you could try undipped WG. My mother’s wedding set is undipped WG it has a more “grey” appearance.

The price gap didn’t surprise me when we did an exploratory shopping trip (my ring is platinum) but one sales consultant mentioned that white gold will wear differently than platinum and that might be noticeable a few years down the road. I think we’re going to stick with platinum, but the prices scare me!

Momma Kettle just fussed at me to get on picking out our rings. We’ll do it… eventually. Maybe I’ll pick one of your ring options since my ring is white gold. Le sigh.
