Daisies, the Spa, and a Ring: Part 2

September 22nd, 2011 @ 1:08 pm by Miss Aardvark

So, when we left off, Mr. Aardvark had asked both of my parents for their blessing. My momma and I had had a girly-girl day getting pampered at the spa, followed by some serious shopping, and were on our way home.

The A-man had spent most of the day, when he wasn’t picking up the ring or playing phone tag with my dad, looking for daisies. You would not think that would be too hard to do in May. You would be wrong. He went to every flower shop in town and came up empty handed; he was scrambling and running out of time before we got home.

He finally found some flowers that looked close enough to daisies at a farm stand outside of town. He bought them out and headed back to the house to commence nervous pacing.

When my mom and I got home, there was a large potted daisy in the hall of the apartment. Hmmm…what could this be doing here? Surely he does not have anything up his sleeve right now…

I opened the door. More daisies. And candles…and my own sweet Mr. Aardvark standing there to greet me. He was wearing my favorite shirt of his, and there was a noticeable large box in the chest pocket. “Hi,” I said. “Hi,” he said. “I want to tell you something and then ask you a question.”

This was it! My heart was racing, my head was spinning…and I kept thinking, “This is your proposal! This is happening! You are going to marry this man!” And also, “Pay attention—he’s talking to you! Remember every little thing. Soak it in! Are you soaking it in?! This is so magical!”

I remember he got down on one knee and took my hand. I remember I got down on my knees, too, because I felt silly towering over him at such an important moment. I wanted to be as close to him as I could. I remember him telling me he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. (He said a lot more than that, and it was really beautiful. I just can’t remember exactly what it was.) I remember him asking, “Will you marry me?” and me saying, “YES! Yes, yes!” I also remember him squeezing my elbow with the hand he was not holding my hand with. It was such a sweet nervous gesture that it really stuck with me. I have started doing it back to him when we are in the car or out to dinner. It has become our own secret, unspoken “I love you.”

After I said yes, he reached in his shirt pocket and opened a blue box with a beautiful sparkly diamond ring inside. I could not believe it! That was for me!? We had briefly talked about rings, and all I told him was that whatever it was made from I wanted to make sure it was ethically sourced. I did not expect a diamond at all and have seen lots of rings with different stones or no stones at all that were truly beautiful. But this bad boy had all the sparkle and shine of Las Vegas and the Milky Way combined. And it was now on my finger! I still catch myself staring at it while at work, or driving, or watching TV, or reading, or at church… Wanna see?

This is a great picture of Mr. Aardvark. I am a little too excited and am making a crazy face, but can you blame me?

After we got our wits about us, my mom (Oh yeah—I had forgotten she was there! To be fair I had forgotten anyone else was in the whole world besides Mr. Aardvark and me!) went to grab some steaks to grill, and Mr. Aardvark and I were able to bask in our newly engaged status! Oh, and start calling people. Apparently no one had their phones on, though, and it was our seventh or eighth call, my grandma I think, who was the first to answer. We did manage to eventually share the news with all of our loved ones and enjoyed a great steak dinner with my mom.

It was so nice to be able to share that beautiful moment with my mother. I know it meant a lot to her, too.

Did you have any witnesses to your proposal? Did you call people right away? Did they answer?

wow! your ring is stunning! I love proposal stories and this one is super sweet. I love that you have your secret way of saying “I love you”. My husband proposed to me at the waterfront park in Charleston SC, there were tons of people around to witness but i can’t for the life of me remember if anyone actually noticed the proposal - i was blind to the rest of the world.

What a cute story and a beautiful ring! Mr. Aardvark did good!

My FI proposed on our lot that we had just started having our house built. His parents went out there a about 15 minutes before we arrived and lay out “Will you marry me” in rose petals on the back side of the lot. They then waited and had the video camera out. They made a copy of it and now my parents got to witness it as well.

You have such a unique looking ring! I absolutely love it, and well it doesn’t hurt that it reminds me a little of my own.
