Paper vs. Chalk

September 23rd, 2011 @ 12:12 pm by Miss Porcupine

I love all things paper. When I was a kid I was always way too into my back-to-school supply shopping; I love roaming around the stationery/journal section of bookstores; and I still prefer a paper list to a digital one—but paper products can be pricey! When it comes to the wedding I have been looking a lot into chalkboards. They go perfectly with the rustic feel of our venue.

We are definitely going to have a menu chalkboard. Since all of the dinner choices will be decided upon when invites go out, there will be no need for menu cards. A chalkboard menu displayed at the venue entrance will do the trick, refreshing everyone’s memory on what they are about to eat. We are still undecided on the chalkboard seating chart.

I can already hear my grandma: “What’s this smudge?” *licks finger and erases everyone at her table*

How are you planning on wrangling all the different paper aspects of your wedding?

I had a chalkboard seating chart too!! I used chalk MARKERS, which you can find online really easily, so they didn’t smudge. The downside is they take a little practice.

I set my seating chart up in Excel with columns and rows. I then figured out how wide my rows/columns would be based on how many rows/columns in Excel. (Ex. 20 rows, my chalkboard is 20 inches high = 1 in per row and so on).

After I had that done, I made a grid with string and wrote the names in from there. It was rather time consuming, but I LOVED the final results!!

Glad to see someone else who loved school supplies as much as I did. Only now it has turned into an obsession with office supplies. Chalkboards may not be paper products, but they are just as fun to shop for! Sooo many chalk options ;-)

I really wanted a chalkboard menu too, but ran out of time and gumption. I love them though! And your comment about grandma made me lol.

We did a chalkboard menu, I loved it! I wish I would have done more chalkboards and less paper in the end, much easier and less ’stuff’ at the end of the day :)

@piglet_625: Yes, I’ve heard of these. I’ve gotta look into those!
@ruffledbride: Haha so glad I wasn’t the only good excited about number 2 pencils and Fivestars. lol.
@Miss Ladyfingers: The sad thing is… my grandma would legit do this. I’m afraid I’m going to throw this on the backburner myself if I wait too long.

Fricking hilarious! As usual.

I’m going with a giant (and likely costly) posterboard for our seating assignments. Also, we’re doing sheets in frames for our gift, cake, and sweetheart tables.

Our lovely invitation designer is making the invites match our STDs, so we’ll be carrying the colors, fonts, whimsical curliques through all the paper products, even the programs, menus, place cards, etc.

Having said all that, I don’t know how I’m going to get it done! I wish I knew someone with impeccable chalkboard handwriting to just be done with it!
