Paintin’ on My Face

September 23rd, 2011 @ 6:19 am by Mrs. Skunk

Four days a week, I cover myself in flour around 5 AM and then sweat for the next eight hours hawking bread at farmers’ markets. So not conducive to makeup.

The other three days, I’m on rock or at the very least at the gym. Again, not a place for makeup. For the most part, unless Mr. Skunk and I are out on a date, the most that’s on my face is ChapStick and mascara.

My mom, on the other hand, won’t leave the house without makeup. It’s just not proper. My grandmother was the same way. And as a nod to them, I do want to get all fixed up for the big day. I decided I wanted to go to Bare Escentuals since it was the original 100% pure mineral makeup and the only thing that I’ve worn (thanks to mom’s hand-me-downs!) for the past five years. For me personally, I wanted something that would look nice, but still not feel too heavy. About an hour later I was set!

I got set up with the whole foundation set, but the fun stuff was with my eyes! My eyes are blue, so we opted for rosy colors on my lids. I will use a creamy white highlighter just under my brow line that my mom already owns. All over the lid I will use a rose gold, and in the crease a deep plum color. I’ll finish up with eyeliner plus this amazing mascara. I LOVED my eyes.

Sorry for the fuzzy cell-phone pictures! I decided, for whatever reason, that you aren’t made up unless you wear lipstick. I tried on just about every color and couldn’t fall in love with anything. This is why my lips are chopped out of the previous pictures. The lipstick I had on in the after picture was sooooo dark! I’ve opted to go for lip gloss after all.

Add a little bit o’ this and a little bit o’ that, and the finished product will be awesome. I didn’t completely like how I walked out on that day, but that’s why I’m planning on doing my own makeup. I’m so incredibly picky, so on the big day I can have everything look exactly how I want it. Anyone else planning on doing their own makeup?

these colors look so great and i love the natural feel to them….

i hate to be negative nelly, but i’ve read on some of the boards here that mineral make up can appear too reflective in pro pics and can make you look shiny and oily. i’m not sure, since i don’t use it myself, but maybe you want to make a few test runs/photos??

@blurmeblue: I used BM for my engagement photos and we had no problems.

hey!

Just a tip, minerals makeup is amazing (I love it too) but you may want to try something else for pro photos. There is something in the mineral powder when applied to the face and when a pro photo is taken your face can come out looking whiter the normal. A makeup artist told me this once and when I looked back through photos, I realized it too. It’s something in the mineral, so a lot of make up professionals don’t recommend it for a big event (or when you are having pro photos done). It is a great product though!

@blurmeblue: I’ve ben wearing bare escentuals for 3 years and I heard the same thing when researching makeup for my big day. I didn’t want risk it & look shiny or sweaty so I took a trip to the MAC store. And I have to say I LOVE their makeup and I’m glad I wore it on my wedding day. Fantastic lipstick and eyeshadows

I don’t log in to comment often but when I read your post I just had to warn you.
Definitely test your mineral makeup with flash photography in different lighting. Mineral makeup does flashback with flash photography in dark light. So can any foundation with a lot of sunscreen in it.

You might want to try a very light, sunscreen free foundation instead. Makeup Forever’s HD Foundation is made for professional photography, but it’s super-light and just makes your natural skin look even and smooth. I wear it everyday and I can’t even feel it. If you want it to stay on for a really long time (think 12-15 hours) use a silicon-based primer with it. If you live by a Sephora a makeup artist can help you find the best base for your wedding day makeup.

I love the colors you chose! I used BM makeup for my wedding and then used the Makeup forever HD finishing powder over it, which I love because it makes your face feel so smooth. That seems to have solved the brightness/shiny issue for me. I also recommend finding a lip liner in a color that you like and lining and filling in your lips with it before you gloss (I used a Makeup Forever one)– I lick my lips so often that lip gloss lasts about 5 minutes, but the liner gave me lip color most of the night.

@blurmeblue: I’ve had that problem with other mineral makeup, but not with BM.

Beautiful choices, Miss Skunk!

Your eyes look great! I do love their mascara so. I wore mineral makeup for our engagement photos and didn’t have any problems, BUT they were during the daytime, and outside. Not sure how it performs, like others have cautioned, with flash or in darker areas.

These colors look great for you! And I’m jealous you can go without makeup all the time, I have a serious complex if I don’t wear mascara.

Ahhh. Yikes. I’m glad this post went up now. I’ve never heard the photog scariness surrounding BM. I’ll have to do some tests soon!
