Miss Fox's Picture
Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!
About Miss Fox

I Do Declare

September 25th, 2011 @ 11:00 am by Miss Fox

So this is completely random and not so much wedding related, but about a year ago Mr. Foxy and I reached a new level in our relationship. We took the big leap…into domestic partnership! (Cue applause.)

We decided that since I would be going from a desk job with good health insurance to one as a massage therapist with likely little or no health insurance, we’d add me to Foxy’s plan through his job. In order to do so (and since we aren’t getting married for another eight-plus months), we had to fill out this fun little form:

I Do Declare : wedding havre de grace legal Domesti domesti

I mostly get a kick out of being able to choose from the terms fiancé or domestic partner, and criteria #5: we swear that we are not related by blood closer than would bar marriage in the state in which we reside.

But I guess it has to be said!

Anyone else out there reaping the benefits of domestic partnership before marriage?

Yes for the same reason! I quit my health insurance providing job and went to law school so FI picked me up on his health insurance. I do get a kick out of referring to him as my domestic partner.

I haven’t thought about it with Mr.Smith but I’ve heard other couples take that step. Not in the engaged bees ofcourse, but I wonder if that woukd make a fella delay a proposal? Any thoughts bees?

My FI was out of work for a little while and so I put him on my insurance for a year. He ended up getting a job with great benefits, which I am happy about because that took a big chunk out of my paycheck and messed with my taxes.

@Mr.Smithsgirl: I don’t think it made a difference in our case, even though I used to always joke that health insurance was the only benefit of getting married.

I’ve had spousal coverage under my FH’s health insurance for almost 2 of the 3 years that we’ve been together. I didn’t have any extended benefits, and his are incredible; so to us it made sense.

He was the one who suggested that we fill out the paperwork then; and to answer the PP’s question, he also surprised me with a proposal this spring.

I would have done it for FH to have my health benifites, however my company only allowed same sex domestic partnerships… so no go for us… =/

@calico61979: Totally hear you with the the dent to the paycheck/taxes- since we’re domestic partners and not married yet, my health insurance coverage is considered taxable income for Foxy.. so it take a pretty big chunk of his paycheck. Sad but true.

How do you go about doing this? Do you contact your insurance agency or your state govt or what? I’ve heard of this but didn’t really understand how to work it out!

We had to move for my fiance’s job, and I haven’t found one yet. So I’ve been uninsured for a couple months until I was able to set up an independent coverage. It would be great to be on his insurance instead!!

@sweetcV2B: When we did it we got the form from FI’s employer’s benefits department and faxed it back to them.

Mr. BC and I have one of these as well right now. It kinda bums me out his benefits are considered taxable income but at least the arrangement won’t last too much longer!

That’s really neat! My company only allows same-sex domestic partnerships so this wasn’t an option for us but as soon as we were married I dropped my insurance like a hot potato and switched to my husbands. He works for the state and pays 0 for it. The amount we save each month = car payment! woo woo

@sweetcV2B: Pretty much what Natalieh86 said! You have to go through your (or your FI’s) employer to see if it’s something they offer. If so, it’s really just a bit of paperwork!

This is the same thing we did! The Baconator was about to quit his job and didn’t want to worry about COBRA, so he joined on to mine. Now that we’re officially married, I should probably update HR, huh?

Illinois doesn’t work that way. We’d have to do a civil partnership, and to get on insurance, that didn’t start til July. So we figured we’d just wait and do the wedding thing.

We did this years ago for a sneakier reason, but one I don’t regret. We lived in a rental house with 3 bedrooms, 3 baths and a couple thousand square feet, but local fire code prevents 4 unrelated people from living together in one unit regardless of size. Well, we had originally lined up one single friend and a set of siblings to share the house, perfect. But the siblings canceled and a couple wanted to move in. So the FW and I filed for domestic partnership to be “related”. We’re still not 100% sure the local fire department would have accepted this, but our landlord did and it never came up.
