DIY Makeup

September 26th, 2011 @ 9:33 am by Miss Warbler

Now that I have an idea of what my engagement-sesh look will be, it’s time to get the makeup down. While Mr. Warbs was busy with football this weekend, I tried out some “war paint,” as Mama Warbler likes to call it. I’ve worn makeup before, but have only recently started wearing it on a regular basis. My main problem is that no matter what I do, I always end up looking shiny after only a couple of hours. I sweat a lot (TMI?) even when it’s not hot out, so I’m constantly feeling self-conscious. I needed to find something that wouldn’t make me look as shiny. A friend of mine recommended MAC’s Oil Control Lotion and swore that it kept her shine free.

A quick trip to my local MAC store and I had the magic elixir in hand. A helpful makeup artist also recommended I try the Prep + Prime Face Protect cream. She said that the cream helps prevent oil from breaking through your skin. I was skeptical because it was kind of pricey, but decided to go home and try it.

First, here is my freshly washed face:

Bleh!

And here I am after applying fresh war paint:

I’m wearing concealer, powder, eye shadow, eyeliner, bronzer, mascara, and lip gloss. I also used a pencil to color in my eyebrows. I liked the way it all turned out, but was anxious to see how long I lasted shine free. Eventually Mr. Warbs ventured away from the TV and we went for a walk around the neighborhood. We needed to pick up a few things from the store, and I also wanted to scout for good photo-op places. It took us about an hour and a half before we stopped to get something to eat. Even though I was sweating in the sun, my makeup held up! I will definitely be adding the Prep + Prime Face Protect to my makeup routine. Thank you, MAC!

You look great! I use Smashbox Photo Finish foundation primer which is essentially the same thing that you are using. It’s FANTASTIC!

You did a great job on you diy makeup! I don’t trust myself to do that well, so I will be having it professionally done. I normally wear mineral makeup, and I just don’t think that would be enough for my epicts.

Very smooth! I never tried MAC before. I love Too Faced powders. I have trouble with shine, so blotting papers always work for me. They dont’ remove makeup. Also, Philosophy has a serum you can put on (Don’t let them see you shine, in blue tube) before your make up that keeps shine at bay for quite a while. I found it at Ulta.

@amw511s: I’ve also used Photo Finish in the past and it didn’t work that well for me. I am SUPER shiny. The light version of their Photo Finish works a bit better, but dries my skin out too much.

Your “war paint” haha! I’m trying out Murad Oil Controller as a primer, so we’ll see how that works out. Got some kinks to work out before the big day! SPF 50 looks great for your skin too… now I’m a little product jealous. :)

After hearing about nightmares from mineral makeup, I was thinking of stopping by the MAC counter to get some foundation. You’ve convinced me to get my butt up today!

You did an awesome job! And, you’re not alone, my face sweats all the time as well. That’s why I always have a powder compact. Always feels like my face is melting off….

So exciting that you found a good combo.. I know MAC can be pricey, but I definitely think most of their stuff is worth it. I think you convinced me to pick up some of the Prep & Prime myself!

As women off color, we often dont have to worry about looking washed out in photos, its usually the extra shine that is a problem…And then couple that with a sweaty face problem - something I identify with way too well…I ended up wearing bare minerals and it worked wonderfully to control the sweat/shine…
