About Miss Aardvark

Our Household

September 26th, 2011 @ 1:51 pm by Miss Aardvark

As I mentioned in earlier posts, Mr. Aardvark and I live together. However, we do not live alone. We have a constant chaperon/dependent/fur baby. Ladies and gentlemen of the internet, meet Kitty or Fuzzy Aardvark:

I apologize for the poor quality photo, but that look of contempt on her face is due to the camera’s presence. She is not very photogenic, but that is beside the point. The point is that she lives in our house. How that came to be is a story unto itself. A story I will now tell.

In my sophomore year of school, I was living with Bridesmaid Red. She had a friend who was unable to keep her childhood pet and was desperately looking for a loving home. Red’s parents live in the country and have a whole collection of barn cats and offered to take this one in, too.

The plan was that she would stay with us for a week and then go to Red’s parents’. Well… when she came to us, she had been staying at a “foster” home and the stress of all the moving had made her thin, and weak. Not to mention she was already about eleven years old at the time.

Now, to be totally honest, I am more of a dog person, but had a few cats growing up and am a sucker for pretty much any kind of animal. This poor Fuzzy Aardvark was too little and too weak to be living in a barn!

Long story short she never made it to the barn. And when Red transferred schools, Kitty stayed with me. Having always had pets growing up, it was nice to have a little furry friend around, especially when I moved to a new state all by myself.

Mr. Aardvark had never had any pets. Well, that may be a bit of an overstatement; he did have some fish when we started dating. Growing up his brother had lots of allergies so  there were no cats or dogs for them. When he moved in with Kitty and me, it was a large adjustment for him. Besides the obvious, couple-moving-in type changes, he had  a fuzzy pet for the first time.

Both Mr. Aardvark and Kitty have had to learn to adapt to each other in this new household. She has had to get used to not being the center of my attention. He had to get used to the shedding, the hair balls, the late night attempts at “hunting,” and numerous other pet owner joys. It has not always been easy (on either of them) but there has been progress and they are generally moving forward in their relationship. Every once in a while there is a regression, but overall they have come to peace with each other.

I am very pleased with this and think it is really laying the groundwork for someday adopting a puppy!

Well…maybe not quite yet…

Did you have any furry family members that were part of your household before your significant other? Was there an adjustment period for either or both of them?

Oh Fuzzy Aardvark is so cute! We both had pets before moving in, but it was still an adjustment…it took the kitty and dog awhile to get used to each other but I think the hardest is that my kitty didn’t like sharing me either :)

My childhood dog died a few years ago and I can’t wait to get a new dog once I live in an apartment where I can keep one.
But I’ll have to wait some more… FI placed a 6 months moratorium after the wedding on getting a dog. He wants me all to himself. ;)

Awww, I love Fuzzy Aardvark! Great rescue story! There’s nothing like the love of a fur-kid. I have two fuzzies and FI had none. FI was a dog person growing up and still is, there are MANY, many bumps along the road BUT I know FI has secretly grown to love the fur-kids… especially at 7 am when they are cuddling in bed and I’m getting ready for work!!

Mr B and I are absolutely NOT “cat people”, but we rescued one too! The poor little guy had just been born and was scheduled to go for a sad trip in a river in a burlap sack!! I couldn’t stand the idea of the little 6-week-old fuzzball meeting such an end…so, we adopted Wayne! He’s been with us ever since :)

I had one cat before Foxy and I moved in together, and “we” decided to get a second one about a month before. It’s funny, because my older cat is definitely “mine”, and the younger one is totally “his”. Your little pussycat is such a cute furball ;)

So cute!! I was never a cat person either, but after I graduated college, I wanted some company and wasn’t home enough for a dog. So a lady I worked with had a friend who needed to get rid of a cat, and in walked Andy. He was the only dude in the house for 7 years! He didn’t have a hard time adjusting though, because he fell in love with John as soon as he started staying over in my new apartment. I can’t say the same for his affection for our dog Rosie, who we adopted last year!

Mr. BC had Wrigley for about a year before we met. One of the first nights I stayed over, she deliberately peed in the hallway right in front of me - trying to assert her dominance. Thankfully that phase didn’t last too long and now I’m her mommy and she is just as much my baby as she is his!

FI + Cat = horrible allergies for the first few months he lived with me. Considering we were in an LDR, he had no choice when he moved her… Love me, love my cat :-P

How could Mr. A not love that face?! I’m slowly converting Mr. P into a cat person, I know he’ll end up loving them!

Fuzzy A. is so cute! Sadly I have terrible cat allergies so can’t have one but they are precious. I think the pickle puppy is a handful all by herself so we probably won’t have any additions anytime soon.

Even though Mr. Kettle had a cat growing up and has one now who lives with his parents, it was still an adjustment for him to living with Kitty Kettle. She’s quite a handful. Very vocal, demanding, and dependent.
