About Miss Porcupine

The Non-Crafty Crafter Wannabe

September 26th, 2011 @ 6:52 am by Miss Porcupine

I want to be crafty, I really do, but I am a crafting failure.

I love DIY-weddings, but over the years I have learned that I’m not the best at DIY projects. In my head the ideas always sound great, but then I begin the project and lose my brainz.

During my sorority days crafting took up far too much of my time. There is something about being in a sorority that makes girls do things like paint giant wooden Greek letters and create sorority family trees on faux tree bark. More times than I care to remember, I would begin a project, gladly going along my merry way, and then hit a snag. I would try to overcome this snag and cause another even bigger snag. Slowly, one by one, I would feel each little nerve ending in my brain POPPING, until finally it would lead to a fit of rage, ending with me throwing the craft across the room. Not. Pretty.

There are a lot of things I would LOVE to craft for the wedding (invitations, place cards, centerpieces, bridal party accessories, etc.), but I have decided-for the sake of my sanity, to narrow it down to crafts I KNOW I can do. The last thing I want to do is inflict torture upon myself when planning what is supposed to be a joyous day.

On a trip to Michaels a few weekends ago, I poked around the store to get some ideas.

One of the things I plan on DIYing is our favors. I decided pretty early on to give homemade fudge as a favor. For reasons related to Ben & Jerry’s, my brain relates fudge to NYC, and I am trying to string some of my NYC pride into our Lancaster, PA wedding.

Plus, I make really good fudge, and growing up my mom’s go-to for the monthly school bake sales was a batch of chocolate chunk fudge. I just need to find something to put the pieces in. Another semi-easy DIY task for my non DIY-brain. (Stick this sticker on the center of the box and repeat.)

I loved these cute little monogrammed boxes at Michaels, but wasn’t too into the price since we would have to buy a few of these packs. Even though I wasn’t ready to buy, I definitely love the idea of a cute little box of fudge with a peacock feather strung onto the top. And, best of all, I can accomplish the DIY aspect of it (I hope).

A few Google searches brought up some cute options.

I love these Tiffany inspired boxes, because of my sick love of all things Tiffany, but I don’t know if I can think of a good reason for how they fit into the wedding.

This peacock box is pretty self explanatory. We will probably end up with something like this when it’s all said and done.

Do you wish you were a better DIY skilled bride?

Oh my goodness, I am the SAME WAY. I am such a terrible DIY’er…but I did successfully finish a few…it just took me many trials haha. Love the fudge idea, way cute!

I have really tapped into my inner DIYer during the planning process. I think I just never had the time/patience before, but now I’m motivated. But there’s nothing wrong with not being DIY inclined! That’s why there are things like those boxes. And wedding professionals :) I love that you’re making homemade fudge, and I love that peacock box!

Miss Porcupine, please be crafty and do your own packaging! Like you, I have all of these crafty ideas but actually following through is a completely different story. I get so frustrated when I can’t do it just right. However, I am planning on doing favor boxes, too. I found some cheap boxes at uline.com (http://www.uline.com/BL_5602/Gift-Boxes). You could definitely add some ribbon and a peacock feather. Or you could do ribbon and then a sticker like this with the peacock image and your names/initials. http://sweetsanity.typepad.com/weddings/2010/02/jordan-and-brads-peacock-feather-wedding-favor-stickers.html

I know we can be crafty!

I always wish I was more skilled with DIY, but I was happy with the projects I managed to do for our wedding. Some of them really weren’t worth the stress though. Good luck on your projects!

Go to a scrapbooking store like Archivers. If you buy the paper from them you can use their machines (for free!!!) to cut out the boxes. I was able to buy super fun paper and cut out the boxes there. The ladies there were SO helpful they ended up helping me and even giving me paper for free as I messed up lol.

And I am slowly becoming more DIY savy but it is definitely a work in progress. I have this horrible delusional personality when I see something I want that is “too expensive” I think, “I can make that.” At that is where the problem starts lol.

Thankfully you don’t need to be a DIY goddess to have a unique and personalized wedding day. So if it’s not your thing, then let it it go and focus on what IS your thing. It sounds like that’s exactly what you’re doing by incorporating your delicious fudge. Your guests are gonna love it!

I always think I am craftier than I am. I will see something and think to myself… ’self you can do that’. Turns out I can’t. Love the fudge idea though!

I can be DIY savvy if I need to make one or two cute things. But things that come in multiples like favors and invitations give me hives. I barely managed to self address all of my invitations!

If you are looking for an easy way to do DIY favor tags, look no further. Download a template from avery.com and use Avery perforated business cards (they come in ivory or white)… I also used a corner-rounder punch from the scrapbooking aisle at walmart. I added a hole punch and am tying them on to caramel apples this weekend. The tag making part was SO easy, I just hope attaching them to the favors will be a breeze as well!

I’m the same. Start off with visions of hand-spun silk shawls from silk worms I reared in my backyard. Yeah, right. I def screw something up and get frustrated.
