Let me tell you something about who I was in high school. I was one of those people who went with the flow. I had my group of friends, most of whom I met in middle school. There was a group of four of us who remained friends all throughout school and even went to college together. Things changed there, but in high school we were inseparable. I was content with who I was in high school.
THEN:
I had my best friend, who I met in the seventh grade when I first moved to Iowa from California. We were more like sisters than friends.

I wasn’t Miss Popular, but I definitely was not unknown either. I went to the largest high school in Iowa. There were 2,400 students while I attended there, so it was very easy to get lost in the crowd. I had my core things that I did in high school. I was in choir all four years, and I did a little of this:

That is correct. I was in show choir. Needless to say, I am a major Gleek now, though what the kids on that show go through was nothing like what I went through. You weren’t a pariah if you were a show-choir member, thank goodness. I also loved going to school dances. We had three a year. First was homecoming:

This was alway my favorite dance. Only my senior year did I go with a date; the other three years I preferred to just go with my friends and have a good time with them. Then there was the Sweetheart Dance. This really was for the couples, so I only went twice while I was in high school. And finally, there was prom:

What I loved the most was dressing up in the beautiful dresses. The flashier the better. I would always be on the lookout for my next dress. The really crazy thing was I never thought about my wedding dress.
I wasn’t a relationship-serious girl in high school. Mr. D was my first real, serious relationship. When I was in high school, I was focused on my plan for college. I was going to get through undergrad, go to law school, practice law for a while, and then go and work for a political campaign, which would then pave my way to becoming legal counsel for some bigwig politician. I figured if marriage happened, great—otherwise I would be fine with my career. I even broke up with my boyfriend before college so I would be going in free and independent.
I do have to share my biggest secret with you, hive. You know how most senior classes do those award ceremonies at the end of the year and pass out things like “Best Smile” and “Most Likely to Succeed”? Want to know what I won?

Yeah, I won “Biggest Klutz.” It had something to do with my numerous black eyes and sprained ankles, and this one incident with a toilet that caused quite a bump on my head.
NOW:
Obviously Mr. D completely changed everything for me. I found out what true love is; I found my partner in life. I also realized that I really didn’t want to be a lawyer. My goal now is to work for a non-profit organization that focuses on children with special needs and their families.
Now that I am planning my wedding, the funniest thing is I don’t want a flashy wedding dress. I want something simple and understated. This is a complete switch from Miss Doily in high school who loved bling, glitter, feathers, and outrageous colors.
I’m fond of the girl I was in high school. I was kind to others, I was a good friend, and I believe I really stayed true to myself. However, I like the woman I am today a lot better.
And guess what?
I’m still a klutz.
