Painting Ourselves

September 27th, 2011 @ 5:06 am by Mrs. Funnel Cake

Hive, I’ve been a busy bee painting away to get our cake topper done. After all the details have dried and been sewn together or glued on, I’m ready to call this DIY project “done.”

After I drew a rough sketch on the dolls and consulted Mr. Funnel Cake on whether closed or open eyes were better, it was time to paint the first layers of our outfits. This part took awhile while I let layers dry and then painted new details and colours on top.

Mr. Funnel Cake thought we looked more serene with our eyes closed, so I nixed the open eyes and gave us these peaceful faces. I made sure to make Mr. Funnel Cake’s Swiss eyebrows nice and bushy to be more realistic. ;)

After we were done being painted, it was time to accessorise! I made a bun for myself out of the clay I bought for my funnel cake charms and cut out some leftover tulle from my petticoat to make a mini-veil. I haven’t shown you Mr. Funnel Cake’s suit yet, but do you remember what my gown looks like?

Before I started with the fabric accessories I coated the dolls with a clear resin varnish to protect the paint and give us some shine.

Mr. Funnel Cake spent some time explaining to me how a real parachute is made in an effort to help me make a mini-parachute. I managed to make something that portrays his “Fallschirm,” and he supplied me the white cords from real parachute materials so we’d have something authentic in there.

I made sure to paint my Lulu Splendor earrings on, and I sewed a little bouquet out of sequins and beads.

Mama Funnel Cake suggested we could make a mini pink helmet as an homage to Mr. Funnel Cake’s military unit, and we both LOVED the idea. This little helmet seriously makes Mr. FC smile like crazy. He even called it “cute!”

For myself, I crafted some Canon cameras. I was only going to put one around my neck, but when Mr. Funnel Cake asked if I was using both I thought, “Why not?” I am known to carry two around with me, and I do own both a big and smaller body. It’s more “me” this way!

Lastly, I made a base plate for the dolls to stand on with the helmet and parachute. I was originally going to try and paint the pattern from our invitations, but I have a ton of extra invitations lying around, so I just cut out a circle and glued it to the top of the plate.

So finally, they are done! For now everything is freestanding, but after we fly to Columbus with the topper I will glue everything down with superglue before handing it over to the cake lady.

Both of us are really happy with how the topper turned out, and Mr. Funnel Cake thinks it’s SO cool that it has a parachute and helmet.

How are you topping your cake?

These are so cute, I’m jealous! I tried to make a topper out of clay and it was just a mess. I like this idea better but my FH is so much taller than me. Also wanted to include our french bulldog.

The details on your dress look great! You’re very talented!

This is so impressive and it turned out amazing!!! You could absolutely open an Etsy shop if you ever decide you wanted more on your plate. lol.
By the way, I am loving reading your posts. I am moving to Germany (6 hour train ride from Zurich) in 3 weeks and will hopefully be getting married there within the year that I will be there. Reading about your adventures with shopping and wedding planning between two nationalities has been really helpful for me. So thank you. :)

I have so been looking forward to seeing the finished product - these are fantastic!! It makes me wish I’d done mine myself too instead of ordering something that’s customized, but not THIS customized. Awesome work FC!

Those look amazing! I can’t decide whether I like the cameras or the bouquet or the helmet best. And you did such a great job painting the faces and the dress details! You should open up your own Etsy shop :)

These are freaking awesome. The details on these are amazing. And they are giving me delusions that I can do this myself… which would be a disaster for me lol.
