A Keepsake?

September 27th, 2011 @ 5:41 am by Mrs. Teaspoon

I am already debating whether or not to sell my wedding dress. I know a lot of bees before me have contemplated selling their wedding dresses (such as Mrs. Fro Yo and Mrs. Cowboy Boot). I don’t intend on wearing it again, and I am personally a huge fan of the eBay recycling system when I no longer have an interest in clothes. So why not my dress? Let’s weigh up the pros and cons for selling the dress:

Pros:

  • Additional cash we could use to buy air conditioning or something much more useful than a dress I can’t wear?
  • No dress taking up vast amounts of space in the ever dwindling space of our apartment.

Cons:

  • No dress to pass down to a daughter/grandaughter or anyone.
  • I wouldn’t be able to participate in wedding-dress pub crawls.
  • I wouldn’t have anything to wear to a white-ball-gown party.
  • I couldn’t do a trash the dress in my wedding dress.

OK, so a few of those cons aren’t really cons; the only disadvantage that I can see to selling my dress is that I won’t be able to pass it down to my children. It really would have been nice if my mum still had her dress. I wouldn’t have worn it, but I could have had a piece of it sewn into my dress, tied some of it around my bouquet, etc. Alas, my mum had actually rented her dress.

So, I thought I had the perfect solution—sell the dress, restore and keep the veil for prosperity?

Until I discovered an almighty rip in my veil. So now back to plan A—keep dress. I have just dropped off my dress to have it drycleaned and boxed! I was figuring that way it will be in perfect condition if I do decide to sell it in a year or two. So, in other words, I am still on the fence but taking the steps to ensure that I still have both options!

You always have time to sell it - if you’re not ready to now, maybe you wlll be in a few months or even years. Or maybe you’ll realize you’re happy you kept it and will hold onto it!! I definitely wouldn’t sell if you’re still waffling. Plus, it was pretty and you can totally just play dress up whenever you want ;)

You can still do a TTD session in the dress and sell it! I’m undecided, too. I don’t think my dress would net very much, being a non-designer brand, but I don’t love the idea of keeping it around. And I’m not sure my daughter (if I even have one) would want to wear it, or if it will be in style.

Hahaha, I love this con: “I wouldn’t be able to participate in wedding-dress pub crawls.”
I need to find one of those post-wedding!

Are you catholic at all ? or plan on getting your children baptised or something ? I’m going to get my wedding dress made into Christening outfits when my Fiance and I have children. A special memory and a keepsake but in a smaller form! :o)

At least you’ve made a decision, my dress is still sitting in my closet. I never tried to do anything with it at all. I am planning on keeping the veil though!

Oh, it’s such a tough decision! I’m highly sentimental, and I really love my dress. And yes, I plan on wearing it around the house for fun, so I think I’m going to keep it. I also want to at least be able to show it to my kids. I loved dressing up in my mom’s old clothes, and I would have really loved playing around in her wedding dress if she had kept it, even though it was bright pink!

Also, since my dress is from Priscilla of Boston and they are closing, I feel like I can’t get rid of my dress now. I mean, it’s like the last one! I have to keep it!

@holls83: I am totally considering that, except Mr Teaspoon has his gown that he was baptised in, so ideally we will use that.
@Mrs. Frozen Yogurt: today, I have, you never know in a few years when it has been taking up space and im much less attached to it!
@Mrs. Parasol: I would have loved to dress up in Mum’s - I would have also have loved to have access to her dress, I would most likely have had a custom dress like Mrs Barrettes!

I am on the fence about this too! I know my daughter will never want to wear it (if I do have a daughter) but I don’t know if I can bear to sell it. I am trying to think of a way to get some fabric out of it so at least she will have something for her bouquet or to sew into her dress.

This is a great solution. Getting is kept in perfect condition gives you a lot of options for when you do decide.
