Veil Fail

September 27th, 2011 @ 12:49 pm by Miss Aardvark

OK, so maybe fail is an overstatement, but I am a sucker for a good rhyme. I just feel like I should have some idea about what I want on my head as I vow my love to the man of my dreams! On top of that, some people, like Miss Magic, have picked out their veils before they’ve even bought a dress!!

You may be thinking, “Ms. Aardvark, there are so many looks and styles out there, I’m sure you will be able to find something you like!”

Well, internet, that is the problem. I like all of them (OK, most of them). Yep. Every time I see a veil I imagine myself wearing it down the aisle, and I like it. Every. Time. Shall we take a look at some styles that have fueled my indecision?

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Bubble Bubble+

This elbow length bubble veil…stunning. Love the simplicity and the volume and the classic “Bridey-ness” (it’s a word!).

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Little Little+

THIS! What is it?! Not even sure but I like it. Little sparkles, little poof, little modern, little vintage.

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Mantill Mantill

Ah the mantilla. So classic. As a child I was convinced the mantilla was the veil for me. However that eliminates the option of a blusher. Is that even an issue? I have no idea!

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Birdca Bird+Ca

Birdcage…So retro so chic… So simple. Sigh. SO MANY OPTIONS!

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Shortv Short+V

LOOK AT THIS ONE! How flirty and cute is that? Doesn’t it just make you want to skip down the aisle? Maybe that’s just me.

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Catherd Catherd

Ohhh and the drama of the cathedral length veil. When else in your life would it be ok to drag something so beautiful on the ground? And think of the amazing photos!

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Capvei Cap+Vei

This took my breath away. It’s spunky and cute. It’s vintage and fresh all at once. I am so enamored of these little caps.

The options are truly endless. I am so torn between all of these, and they are only from one website! Etsy, you will be the death of me (or my checking account)!

Maybe I should find some way to work them all together into one fantastic SUPER VEIL! It will be perfect and glorious! …Or… it will be something like this:

Veil Fail : wedding beaver dam veil Godog go+dog+

I have some time. While I have a pretty good idea of what my dress will look like, perhaps, once I try that baby on, I will have a clearer sense of direction.

Where you totally overwhelmed by any of your wedding options? How did you overcome it?

Super Cute post. My advise to you, to take control of the situation, is go to the bridal store where you got your dress from, and try on every style you can think of while wearing your dress. Spend as much time as you need. Also bring in your accessories.
I went out to claires and bought a bunch of different things, tiaras, headbands, ivory flowers, colored flowers, dangle earrings, and studs. I took them with me and tried on everything with each veil. (it is certainly hard to pick accessories when you don’t have a veil, and it is certainly hard to pick a veil, when you don’t have accessories)
Once I had an idea of what went well together, and the style fit with the dress. I returned everything to claires and moved forward on purchasing them on my own, that was a little more high quality. Once you do that and then you will have an idea on what veil you like go back to esty.com and get the style you are going for.
I let my dress and accessories pick my veil in a sense

I was the same away about veils. I liked them all in general and had no real objections to any of them. I ended up going with one my consultant at the dress place put on my head. I was like sure, why not? Once you start putting veils on your head you’ll see what works/fails on your head.

This is exactly how I feel about invitations and fascinators. I’m not thinking I’m going with a veil, but I would probably run into the same issue as you are having if I did! So glad I’m not alone in my indecision of things wedding-related!

I kind of had the opposite problem. It didn’t matter which veil I saw, I hated them all. I planned to wear a fascinator, but when I decided I’d feel less bride-y without a veil, I changed my mind. I just tried a few on while wearing my dress (3 months after dress purchase) and said “hey, this one looks really pretty. Sure, let’s go with it.” Of course, I wasn’t too emotionally invested in the veil, I just wanted something pretty.

I went into the salon decided that I didn’t want a veil at all! I’m glad that I ended up wearing one, but for a long time I didn’t think that I wanted one. I hope you found a solution for your dilemma!

Just in case you love the idea - you CAN have a mantila veil and a blusher. They make mantila drop veils. There’s lace all around the edge, and you wear the middle of the circle of fabric on the top of your head. At the end of the aisle you pick up the front and push it back. For example: http://www.etsy.com/listing/45351473/mantilla-drop-veil-with-beautiful-off

*cough*twoveilbride*coughcough. I mean… it’s an idea… ;)

Are you going to wear glasses on the wedding day? I think that could influence your wedding veil a lot. I think a longer dramatic veil could be soooo pretty on you… or a flirty bird cage veil if you wear glasses. Man, sky’s the limit! Lord knows I have trouble buying one accessory. :D

I’m having my friend make mine. I gave her a vague idea of what I like, bought the materials, and sent them to her. The rest is in her hands. This way I can’t get too picky about it. She’s making a flower for my hair as well since I couldn’t decide if I wanted to veil or flower so I am doing both!

Oh man, I had such a difficult time settling on a veil! I wanted a mantilla veil for forever, but then I started to fall in love with the drama of cathedral veils. In the end, I went with my gut and got a fingertip mantilla veil. It was gorgeous and perfect for me, and it still had a lot of drama. I loved it!

I am satisfying a little bit of my veil envy by wearing one on Halloween :-) For my wedding in December, I’ll be wearing a lovely, classic elbow-length veil, and for my costume I’ll be a zombie bride rocking a birdcage veil!

I’m wearing my moms. I’m like you, I’ve known the mantilla was mine from childhood, but having one at the ready made the decision even easier.

I completely agree, I had no idea. My dress ended up dictating my veil choice. Also, dont forget the option of a more formal veil for ceremony and a funky fun one for the reception!

Thank you all for the advice! I think getting down to business and actually trying different styles will be key. And I am totally down for two veils… Why not right?

@Ms. Funnel Cake, Glasses vs. No Glasses is a who can of worms I have not decided on yet. :)

Omg, I could have written this! I want ALL the veils! I could just stack them up on top of each other.
I think I’m leaning more towards the cathedral veil, the one you posted here is PERFECT, except about 10 times what I’d be happy paying. Boo.

I agree! I have always loved the mantilla, even when *shut up or i’ll hate you* Mandy Moore wore one in A Walk to Remember.

But! My concern is the lace vs. lace issue, I have lacy sleeves on my dress.

I think I’m going with a birdcage veil, they’re just so sassy. My one question though, is do you just keep it on and ignore it during the kiss? Is that awkward?

Have you looked at velvetowl on etsy? Her creations are like little net cream puffs for your head. Love it.

We are the shop that has the first veil in this post. Our brides really do LOVE it! But if you want a mantilla veil, I agree about the DROP veil. It is a mantilla only the center of the veil is place on the top of the head, and the front is worn as a blusher. The groom can then lift it and flip it to the back.

We have one on our site. I copied it from Kate Middleton. So pretty and feminine.
Here is the link:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/73263982/royal-wedding-veil-kates-veil?ga_search_query=kate&ga_search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_5417907

The lace is very rich looking but not over the top, so as to take away from the dress. And there is no wrong or right side to the lace, so when it is flipped, it doesn’t look funny.
