Miss Doe's Picture
Miss Doe, Northern California Age and Occupation: 24, Real Estate Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Recycling Manager Engagement Date: December 25, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: Monte Verde Inn About Me: I’m a Rat Pack fan and a Christmas nut that loves to read, good wine, cheesy ’80s movies and ’90s sitcoms. My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. We are two old souls that are creating our long-awaited wedding with loads of tradition that blends our two styles into rustic elegance in the foothills of Northern California.
About Miss Doe

It’s Like Raaaiiiin

September 30th, 2011 @ 12:56 pm by Miss Doe

…on your wedding day. Isn’t it ironic, don’t ya think? I would like to formally apologize now for getting that song stuck in your head for the rest of the day. I’m sorry, but it had to be done.

We chose the month of May to have our wedding for one huge reason: the weather. We really would like to have an outside ceremony and reception. Typically in the month of May in California, the weather is gorgeous. Not too hot, not too cold, and blue skies as far as the eye can see.

Except this past May; not only did it rain, but it stormed. There were huge winds and a record amount of rain. My heart broke for all the brides out there who planned outdoor weddings with no backup plan. Not just May though, there was another huge storm at the beginning of June. This is almost unheard of in California; it was shocking to say the least. This gave me a massive dose of reality. I had thought rain could be possible, but it most definitely will not happen. Now I am expecting it half as much as I am expecting beautiful weather. It is very possible it can happen and gosh darn it, we will just need to deal with it.

I am happy to say that we have a very strong backup plan. As much as I love the outdoor area of our venue, the inside area is just as beautiful. The Inn is an old Georgian style house turned bed and breakfast. The main room has impeccable hardwood floors, a cozy fireplace and a fantastic crystal chandelier. Let me show you a few photos to give you a sense of just what I am talking about.

Absolutely stunning. Therefore if rain decides to rear its “lucky” head into our wedding day, I will embrace it with open arms. Bring it on rain, I’m not scared of you.

Is anyone else getting a little nervous about rain? Do you have a backup plan just in case?

Yep. My wedding is scheduled almost a year to the day that Hurricane Irene hit Rhode Island. First one in 20 years. Oh, did I mention our venue is smack dab on the Atlantic Ocean?? I’m with ya, sista.

Soooo pretty! We’re having an outdoor wedding in Florida, in November. *Historically* that’s the perfect time of year to do it. Trying to book a wedding venue in Florida in November is really hard unless you start at least 12 months in advance. But I’m still worried. With all the crazy weather weirding over the past few years, I feel like all bets are off. There’s an indoor part to our venue - where we’ll be eating - and a covered deck, and I think it will be manageable as a backeup plan.

So beautiful! I definitely was nervous at the California rainstorms that made themselves known this summer, praying it wouldn’t be so in september! I didn’t really have a backup plan, thankfully I didn’t need it. Friends, though, are choosing to get married outdoors in Santa Barbara next June, which DOES get rain quite frequently and is almost always overcast and gloomy. They don’t seem to realize that. Oops.

You cannot trust the weather these days! Before setting my wedding date I checked with the Farmer’s Almanac- sunny and not a drop of rain on that day in the past 10 years! This year on that day Hurricane Irene tore through my town and there was an emergency evacuation. (My parents don’t remember a hurricane in this area since before I was born!). Our venue was on a pier outside on the Hudson River. 2 days before we found out that the wedding wouldn’t happen because of the hurricane. I was in tears as I told our venue coordinator that no, we did not have a Plan B (there is no inside space at our venue). We couldn’t postpone the wedding because we had so many out-of-town guests that had already flown in (several in our bridal party) and we knew that they would be about to come back in a week or a month. So, in at twist of fate we some how moved our Saturday wedding up to Friday - on Thursday. Yeah. Every single vendor pulled through and only 7 guests couldn’t make it because of the last minute switch! And I guess what they say about the “calm before the storm” is true - we had the most beautiful weather! It was the craziest 2 days of my life but sure makes for a good story! Lesson learned: always have a Plan B!!!

oh and ps - the whole time I was freaking out trying to re-plan and figure out what to do my husband was singing a modified version of this song: “it’s like a hurrricaaaaine of on your wedding day.” Gotta love a man with a sense of humor!

OMG I can totally picture a ceremony there while it rains outside, it’s gourgeous.
Hopefully you’ll have a beautiful sunny day, but I can tell even if it rains it’ll be amazing.

I always figured I didn’t need a back up plan for September in California. The night before our wedding it dumped and we even got some thunder and lightning. Thank goodness by Saturday morning it had all cleared up to a beautiful day.

@Ocean: Okay, the chances of another hurrican happending the same exact day? (hopefully) not likely…I think you should be good! I am sending you good vibes, I think it will be beautiful weather :)
@Miss Ladyfingers: Atleast you have something just in case! But hopefully you won’t need it.
@ookbob: Oh yeah, September in Cali can be so weird. I went to one wedding where it was 105 degrees….then just last week it rained here. Weird!
@neenbean: WOW! Super bride and vendors to pull that off! And oh my gosh, i’m dying of laugther of your husband’s revised version of Alanis Morisette…hilarious!
@Coffee cup: Awww thank you! :) Both are definitely gorgeous. So I will have to go with the flow.
@xtatic1: The day after storms are always so pretty, I bet your wedding was absolutely gorgeous!!!

This is a beautiful back up plan! Our backup was a glorified machine shed, I was so grateful we didn’t have to use it :)

So the inside of your venue is almost MORE beautiful than the outside. Gorgeous!

On my 21st birthday there was a massive storm and our garage (where the party was to be held) flooded knee deep with golf ball sized hail floating in it. We moved in side just before the power went out. In short, I nearly had a mental breakdown but luckily we made do, the party was held inside, and the power eventually came back on.

Fast forward to our engagement party, and we had to spend $200 on last minute marquees from Kmart to cover the 140 people in our backyard as it poured constantly, 90mm rain fell during the 5 hour party.

So, we didn’t even think of having an outdoor wedding after all that. Mr. Roux refuses to marry me outside!

You have such a great attitude, Doe! Though I’m hoping for clear skies on your big day. That way, you can choose whether or not you want to go inside, and you’ll also get to take pictures outside (awesome!). Though rainy pictures can be pretty cool as well…

I am having an April wedding outdoors… and I am also worried about rain! We have a great indoor backup as well. Hopefully the sun will be shining for both of our weddings!! :)

A little nervous would be an understatement! I am petrified about the rain!!! We are planning an August wedding with an outdoor ceremony which overlooks the Hudson River. We have a backup plan, but it isn’t nearly as beautiful as our Plan A. Fingers crossed that we won’t have to resort to it!

I have to say, the indoor ceremony space is beyond gorgeous. You definitely have a great backup plan. I will say, though, this year has been terrible weather wise across the country.. I like to think the likelihood of that repeating itself next year will be low, but you’re absolutely right - you never know!

Oh Doe! Being a May bride sure has its ups & downs! LOL Our wedding will be May 12th and since we are in Oregon (it isn’t a joke when people say it ALWAYS rains here…) Plan B has been in effect since we chose the venue. Sadly, the prospect of rain has changed the space at our venue that we can use. (Silly me for not thinking that the barn, set to be the children’s area complete with babysitter & bounce house, could possible flood if it does rain…)

Praying for gorgeous weather on your big day BUT I will admit that I am IN LOVE with the inside of your venue!
