Miss Aardvark, Beaver Dam, WI Age and Occupation: 23, Assistant Product Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Business Analyst Engagement Date: May 28th, 2011 Wedding Date: April 2012 Venue: St. Philip Catholic Church/Arcadia Brewing Co. About Me: I am a resourceful lady who love surprises and adventure. At the same time, I value traditions, family and friends. I like to make crafty messes, sometimes, clean them up, and do pretty much anything outdoors. The Mister and I are pretty avid cyclists---we have nine bikes in our home right now...and one motorcycle! We both enjoy eating food we can't pronounce (language doesn't really matter) and going places we've never been. We currently reside in rural Wisconsin, enjoying the cheese and beer it has to offer, and getting outside whenever we can!
About Miss Aardvark

Over the Labor Day weekend, I took a trip with my mom and Mr. Aardvark down to Ohio to visit my grandpa. We also got to catch up with Mr. Aardvark’s parents and MOH MD. It was a very nice family-filled weekend with lots of chit chat, catching up, and just a splash of wedding talk. It was the first time I had been able to meet with MOH MD since becoming engaged, and though it was only a few hours, it was so nice to have some time with a member of the wedding party. As we were heading home, across four states, it got me thinking about my side of the wedding party. You see, as the title implies, I have five bridesmaids in five different states. That’s right: MOH MD is in Ohio, Flossy is in Nebraska, Red is in Minnesota, Sis is in Michigan, and OT is now here, in Wisconsin. That’s a pretty big spread!

So far it has not really caused any issues. Everyone is pretty computer savvy and email has been a life saver. Not all of the girls knew each other when we started, so I made a private Facebook group to facilitate stalking, or at least putting faces with names. That also seems to be working well. They are all such fantastic ladies I can’t wait to have them all in one place at one time!

Speaking of one place at one time, there has been some talk of a group-dress-shop-weekend in Chicago in the fall. This would be the best case scenario. All of us are very busy, but we should know in the next week or so whether or not our schedule stars will align to make this possible. (Keep your fingers crossed!)

If that falls through I think we may divide and conquer and have   “West of the Mississippi River” and “East of the Mississippi River” groups and shop that way. If that also proves impossible (hey, we are some busy ladies!) we will do a virtual group shop, in which everyone would go to her local store with a list of “contender” dresses. Take pictures, send pictures and comments, vote. For obvious reasons, the biggest one being I would not get to hang out with my ladies, this would be less than ideal.

Earlier in the planning process I isolated the dress styles pretty quickly and sent the following image out to my girls.

There has been lots of talk and agreement and three of these styles are favorites, but we will have to try them on to know for sure!

At first, I was pretty amazed at how easily women with different body types who had never met each other could come to agreement so quickly. Then, thinking about my ladies as a group I realized that despite their geographic differences they all have some pretty big things in common. 1) They are all amazing women 2) They are all very smart, 3) They are all pretty easygoing about things like dresses, and 4) they are all the kind of friend that you can not talk to for a very long time and then pick up as if you have never missed a day together. This last point is critical for maintaining long distance friendships, not to mention distance wedding planning!

All in all, I could not ask for a better group of women to support and celebrate with me during this exciting time. I am so blessed to have so many fantastic friends and we are not going to let something as little as a couple hundred miles or state lines stop us from having a great time!

Did you have any (or all) long distance bridesmaids? How did they shop for dresses? How did you all stay in touch?

I looooove style #6!

I don’t know how you do it Miss Aardvark, having 5 BM’s in 5 different states would seriously stress me out!

Sounds familiar. I have 7 bridesmaids across 6 states. My roommate helped pick the dress — trying on samples, etc. Everyone else just commented via email. Not ideal, but a shopping weekend just wasn’t going to happen.

I like your dress picks. Good luck!

I love those dresses. I’ve always drooled over vintage-looking, tea-lenght, coffee dresses.

My 3 maids are in three states. I’m in a fourth. Email and facebook make things much easier.

I have 4 bridesmaids. 3 are in Texas and 1 in Michigan. The 3 in TX are so spread out though and so far away from me that we all might as well be living on different continents so I certainly sympothize with you Miss Aardvark!

It can be taxing at times but remember, these ladies are in this for you! Facebook and email are fantastic ways to convey messages. Thank goodness for the interwebs!

Hopefully you will get to go on your maid-bonding trip and get to see each girl try on each dress. If that doesn’t work out, just remember that it will be ok. They will get their dresses. Just remember to listen to each maid’s concerns whole heartedly when making decisions. I ended up picking out a different dress for each girl (same color and same length) because of different body types and comfort levels. That might not be something that you are up for but just remember to keep an open mind when dealing with several girls across the country.

Have fun!

Same deal here! I ended up emailing some ideas (i didn’t want to do the bridesmaid-dress thing so I found cute cocktail dresses at stores where you can buy online) to get feedback, then picked a dress that they all seemed to SOMEWHAT agree on. I didn’t please everyone at first, but they grew to like it. I had to make an executive decision, though, because they weren’t agreeing on anything.

Next Saturday my bridesmaids will be wearing #3 in clover! It looks gorgeous on all different body types; even one that is 9+ months pregnant!

Yes! I have two local, two about two hours north in Philly, and one (MOH) on LI about 4-5 hours north. Unfortunately, I think I may just need to have the ladies go separately and send pics. Sucky, but it’s really hard to get everyone in one place at one time!

I had two BMs out of state and two in state, but because their schedules are so crazy busy, it felt like they were all out of state anyway.

Wow, your maids sound impressive! What a great support network you have there, Aardvark! And I’m loving those inspirations styles. I can’t wait to see what you and your lovelies pick!

I’m in NJ my MOH (1 of my sisters) live in DE not super far but often hard to coordinate, I’ve got 1 BM in CA 1 in SC and 1 in Philly. I found a dress that will work for all of them on line. It’s not specifically a bridesmaid dress and the shop has an awesome return policy so it works out well :)
