Swiss Skincare

September 30th, 2011 @ 10:19 am by Mrs. Funnel Cake

What’s that, hive? You want to know my Swiss skincare secrets? Well, okaaay, but only because I love you.

I’m actually sort of a rookie at this whole “skincare routine” thang. (Yeah, I said “thang”…) Up until a few months ago, I had a pretty simple routine: Rinse my face with water in the morning, wash it briefly in the shower with face wash at night, and run some lotion over my face as I lotioned post-shower, using zit cream as needed (which was every day).

Then I started a new job. With lots of women. (Pretty women!) You know, the kind who wear stylish clothes, high heels, and makeup. Cue vanity insecurities!

I was getting along fine, starting to wear makeup much more often, when one of my colleagues commented over lunch that I needed to exfoliate. “Huh?” Yes, exfoliate. A second colleague agreed that I needed to exfoliate more, and suddenly I was very self-conscious about how I was taking care of my skin. Perhaps my lazy wash-and-lotion cycle wasn’t enough to combat all the makeup I was wearing lately.

Around this time, Mrs. Macarons mentioned the Clarisonic in a post, and after reading reviews on Weddingbee and skincare sites, I took the plunge and ordered the pro model. I decided that at the ripe age of 24, I had too many pimples for someone supposedly past puberty and that I needed to rethink my skincare regime. Now my skincare routine has developed into this lengthy ordeal over the past two months, and I’m still not sure if it’s worth all the extra effort.

Here’s the breakdown!

Morning:

I start the day by rinsing my face with cold water. I still can’t be bothered to wash my face in the morning, but I might have to reevaluate this later.

After I put my contacts in, I use Swissline De-puffing Eye Moisturizer under my eyes to calm the grog down before breakfast.

Before I put my makeup on, I use Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 to moisturize and prevent oily breakouts during the day. After Murad I will typically put on Mrs. Rainbow’s cocktail of Mac foundation, Monistat chafing gel, and Dove moisturizer.

Sometimes I skip the Murad and just use Skincode Protective Day Cream SPF 12 before some mineral foundation if I’m in a hurry.

Daytime:

During the day, I make sure to drink at least two litres of water from my Radiohead Sigg bottle at work. I actually have a little Post-It tally, too, because I am really horrible about drinking water and I need to make sure I remember to drink by marking my progress.

Evening:

In the evening, I start by removing my eye makeup with Swissline Gentle Bi Phase Eye Make Up Remover. It’s great and I love using it way more than my previous baby-oil removal method.

After I remove my eye makeup, I hop in the shower and at the end I use my Clarisonic with the same face wash I’ve been using since 2007. Shokubutsu is not a groundbreaking cleanser, but I got it from Singapore and using it reminds me of my best guy friend who lives there. I make sure to rinse the Clarisonic brush head and handle out both before and after I use it.

In case it’s helpful, for the Carisonic I usually do 20 seconds on my chin/nose first, 20 seconds on my forehead, 10 seconds on each cheek, and then I restart it and use 20 seconds on my neck/under chin, 20 seconds around my hairline edges, and 20 seconds between my nose and in between my eyebrows for a deep clean. If I don’t use it that long on my nose, I end up coming out of the shower feeling like it’s still full of clogged pores. I use the sensitive brush head on pro speed. If my skin is feeling sensitive, I knock the speed back to low or normal, but I’ve worked up to using the pro speed and it seems to suit my skin OK.

Once or twice a week, I put Swissline’s Force Vitale Mild Exfoliating Refiner on the Clarisonic and use that to wash my face.

After the shower, I pat my face dry and use a cotton swab to dab Skincode Cellular Revitalizing Toner over my skin. I was skeptical about toners in the past, but with all this new schooling on skincare I thought it was an important step to remove any residual makeup and prep the skin for the rest of the skincare routine. (Namely, serums!)

Once my skin is prepped from the toner, I pump out some Cellular Wrinkle Prohibiting Serum from Skincode and work it into my face.

I’m not sure if the wrinkle-prohibiting serum is too rich for my young skin, so I am now also trying out Cellular Perfect Skin Capsules by Skincode and Force Vitale Moisture Revitalizer Serum by Swissline, and I may switch to one of these in the near future. The perfect skin capsules make my skin feel ridiculously smooth and the revitalizer serum is a very light moisture serum. I just might love both…but I’ll get back to you after more testing!

After the serum (or sometimes before) I dab some of Swissline’s Corrective Eye Moisturizer around my eyes to reduce dark circles and prevent crow’s feet.

Swiss Skincare : wedding beauty columbus skincare Screen0115 Screen+0115

(Image from Swissline)

Alternating, I sometimes use Cell Shock Eye Zone Lifting Complex by Swissline to tighten and lift the skin around the eye, but in general I prefer the corrective eye cream because it’s more moisturizing to the delicate eye area and I don’t need that much tightening. The eye zone lifting complex is more liquid, so I just use it a couple times a week in the evenings if I feel like it.

If I have any breakouts, I whip out my trusty Clean and Clear Persa Gel 10 Acne Treatment for some acne spot treatment.

(Image from Swissline)

Finally, because my cheeks are more prone to drying out than the rest of my skin, I finish my routine by lightly moisturizing with Cell Shock Total-Lift Light Cream and focusing around my mouth and cheeks, while avoiding my forehead.

Tool Maintenance:

Once a week (or once every two weeks if I am lazy) I clean all of my makeup brushes with soap and water and let them dry overnight. (I am meaning to get a proper brush cleaner!) I clean the Clarisonic brush head with soapy water once a week and always take the brush out of the shower and let it dry in the charging cradle away from the shower steam.

Results:

Except for a couple camping trips, I have been religiously following this skincare routine for about six weeks. I am still on the fence about the Clarisonic. It is a huge change to my skincare routine and, in general, I think my skin looks cleaner, healthier, and maybe even more radiant. But it’s not SO amazing (at least by now) that I would be recommending a $100–$180 facial brush to my friends and family. It does do a pretty great job of taking off my makeup effectively.

I am still getting pimples, but they are a different kind of pimples now. I am the type of person who picks digs at their face whenever they get a pimple, and since buying the Clarisonic I have noticed I am not popping pimples every night and morning and during bathroom breaks at work. (Because I was totally doing that before!) I am getting smaller pimples (papules and pustules) and more smaller bumps. But in addition to those smaller bumps, I’m also getting more deep-rooted cysts.

Now in general, it’s easier for me to avoid the urge to pop a painful cyst on my chin because it hurts and because there is no visible whitehead to pop. But on the other hand, I don’t really like that I’m getting more of these painful cysts, even as small as they are, so I need to check my Clarisonic settings, how often I wash (the lack of washing in the morning!), and what kind of makeup I use during the day, because this is all affecting my skin.

I’ve noticed that I am getting smaller pimples, less pimples, and pimples that go away more quickly than before I had the Clarisonic. While I have a new problem with the deep pimples, I have noticed that I have literally no pimples around my jawline/neck anymore. I used to always get annoying, painful pimples under my chin and on my neck a few times a month that I would pop and re-pop for days. No more! I also use less Clean and Clear cream these days, where before I was using it every day, but I still don’t think I’ve gotten my skin routine down 100%. In fact, while writing this post I got two fairly big pimples on my chin, which I am unhappy about because I couldn’t help popping them. (I have a problem!) Maybe I need to change my face wash. Maybe I need to tone down or increase the Clarisonic use. Or maybe I should stop wearing so much makeup during the next month?

Anybody have any Clarisonic tips? Did you make any changes to your skin routine before your wedding?

Lol i used to be like that, maybe even worst since most times I don’t even use soap! I was lucky enough to have skin that didn’t break out. My friend kicked my butt into gear and no I know WAY too much about it. Anyway Its good that you start the skin care regiment since it will help your skin stay healthy when you get older.

Though a little note.

1. with the Clarisonic you should only use it once or maybe twice a week. Any more and you are doing more damage then good.

Since you mention your skin getting better you may want to cut the clarisonic down to once a week,

I suggest LUSH’s Angel on Bare Skin. Its a organic face wash that works for all skin types and works like a light exfoliter that is gentle enough for everyday use.

2. You may want to use a face wash in the morning as it will help get rid of the morning gunk

3. toner in the morning to help balance the skin
and you should have a lotion as well.

One last thing I would not suggest changing up your skin care rountine a month before your wedding since sometime you can develop cyst, pimples, etc from certain products. Its better to play it safe when you are only one month away before tthe big day.

If you have any specfic questions you can message me =D

If you’re really struggling with the deeper cysts you may want to actually see a dermatologist - They really can help you find ways for your specific skin type; and if you aren’t afraid of shots, they have one for the deeper rooted cysts that truly helps (worth the pain I promise!)

i thought this post was a joke at one point…16 products are pictured, i dont even know if there were others not pictured! i dont see why you would need more than 3 or 4

I agree with Kura - you may want to cut down on using the Clarisonic everyday to once or twice a week. Another tip, perhaps change up your foundation and powder. I used to use Mac and I always had break outs, no matter how good I was with my skin care routine. Once I changed my makeup to an organic/mineral makeup, my break outs have nearly vanished! I still get an occasional hormonal pimple from time to time, but my skin has definitely cleared up once I stopped using Mac.

Wow FC, made me dizzy! ;) Honestly, mine has about 12 products (if you count water and my facial brush as products). Not all of them are daily, and not all are twice a day! But I’ve struggled with problem skin in the past - cystic acne, whiteheads, blackheads, flaky skin and redness from past breakouts - so I consider my routine completely necessary, especially since it’s working! I wouldn’t be able to stand for the cysts, personally, just bceause I’ve struggled with cystic acne all my life, and to me, those coming back is a sign that something’s not right. I had success with Differin gel at night, Clindamycin pads in the morningl, and Doryx antibiotics for a period of about 8 weeks (all prescription). Now, I’m able to maintain with just the Differin every other night, with some other acne products mixed in here and there.

I had really, really bad skin earlier this summer. I finally (after trying everything under the sun, including seeing a derm) ordered the Nuetrogena skinID line and it changed my skin! My skin did a complete 180. I no longer breakout and am just dealing with scarring from previous breakouts.
I am of the opinion that less is more, so maybe you could cut back and just use a few products? I also agree with previous posters that washing every morning is huge. Thanks for the info on the clarisonic, cause I was wondering about whether or not it would be worth it!

That is a serious amount of products, lady! I hope you’re getting the results you’re looking for. Maybe an appt with a derm would be helpful?

I’ve had acne between the ages of 13 and 30. things like benzoyl peroxide would make it worse.
only three things helped me:

1. lotion with AHA acids
2. exfoliation (dermabrasion when I could afford it, or st ives apricot scrub at home)
3. birth control

#3 works the best by a long shot. if you can even out your hormones, it will even out our acne.

keep your skin well moisturized too! drying it out with that acne medicine was so irritating, my skin hated it.

Not sure how you can be bothered to do all this but not wash your face in the morning? I would suggest starting out with a warm wash with a very gentle cleanser like Cetaphil. Exfoliate only 1-2 times a week. After toner I would go with a simpler moisturizer. Those serums are probably causing the cysts. Trying too many things at once makes it difficult to figure out what is causing what! Maybe look into a simple Murad or Neutrogena acne system–wash, tone, moisturize, spot treatment. and of course an eye moisturizer. This is too much and v expensive…

Just wanted to throw my $0.02 in…you can actually overmoiturize your skin and that can lead to breakouts. If you are using the swiss moisturizer and later a dover moisurizer when you are applying your makeup, that could be part of it.

um, wow. Maybe this is why I don’t have a skin routine? I don’t wear makeup very often (like maaaaybe once or twice a month) and I don’t have a problem with breaking out. So, all I do is wash my face with Oil of Olay bar soap and everyonce in a while I use an apricot scrub. I certainly do not have enough patience to do all that!

The Clarisonic may be causing the cystic acne. Manual exfoliation (i.e. scrubs) is pretty hard on your skin — chemical exfoliation with beta hydroxy or alpha hydroxy acids is much more gentle. Paula’s Choice (paulaschoice.com) has great products for that — my skin has certainly benefitted from them!

Also — Neutrogena Healthy-Skin Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream is amazing. Retinol is kind of a miracle product all around — helps with oil, dullness, etc… just make sure to wear sunscreen, because it makes you a lot more sensitive!

I also highly recommend cutting down on all of these products! My basics for morning and night are just cleanser, toner, and some kind of moisturizer.

Washing your face in the morning with a gentle cleanser is important–you need a good clean base before you apply moisturizer/makeup.

I am a die-hard true blue Clairsonic lover =) I also use mine twice per day per recommendation of my dermatologist =) FYI for those commenting on cutting down the use of the clairsonic–it’s designed to be used on a daily basis, even twice a day. It’s not a scrub brush, the bristles for the face are very soft, and its designed to be used with a creamy cleanser, not an exfoliant. There are ultrasonic waves that penetrate to the root of the acne and help to relieve and reduce it. If you read reviews online, those that reduced the frequency of it’s use were very upset to see that their acne problems returned full force within 24 hours of not using the clairsonic.

I had AWFUL acne when I was younger. I generally have nice clear skin now, for a lot of reasons. I’m definitely not a dermatologist but have seen a lot of them for this problem, so this is my 2 cents for what it’s worth:

I would definitely wash your face in the morning, especially with everything you are putting on it the night before. If you don’t, you’re putting on your morning routine on top of your evening one and that probably makes it pretty hard for your skin to breathe.

It does seem like a lot of products.. What works for me is washing my face when I get up and putting a light day lotion with SPF on it. At night I wash it again and put a special night lotion (I just use Aveeno). If I get pimples, which is rare now, I just put on Persa-gel just like you!

I think that washing in the morning and reducing the amount of stuff you are putting on your face might do a lot. But like Kura said you might want to wait until after the wedding… maybe just try washing in the morning and see if that helps? I don’t see that changing things for the worse.

Good luck! :)

Wow, so many opinions about the Clarisonic!

I trust you ladies though and I think I will start washing in the morning now! It shouldn’t take too much longer… just means I need to coordinate having the face wash handy. :D I’ll do that and a lotion, along with wearing more mineral foundation instead of Mac and see how much my skin clears up before the wedding! It’s really not “bad” now, but I just want to make it as awesome as possible! :)

Hey! I totally feel you and all these other wonderful ladies about bad breakouts. I have to redo my skincare routine. I used the clarisonic brush 3x a week. I use Cetphil for oily skin in the morning followed by a salicylic acid toner and a Neutrogena benzoyl perxide face wash at night. I think the combo of the two ance treatments works well for me. I also like to rub lemon juice and fine sugar on my face from time to time (lightly) for extra exfoliation. Good luck!

You’re over exfoliating my dear…what Kura said is totally correct…you’re doing more harm then good…I use a couple of the products you mentioned…and have seen an improval in my skin…I was the complete oposite I would get cystic acne..but large ones on my chin….since the Clarisonic (which I use once a week) and I started adding AHA (Lactrin cream) to my daily moisturizer I have had little to no daily break outs like I did before…(Lactrin really works…you should try it!)

Murad products did terrible things to my skin. My scarring took over a year to significantly reduce after stopping because of the cystic acne it caused. Retin-A creams have been super helpful in getting my skin back to where I want it.

Man, you were thorough here, FC! Is it terrible if I admit that I’ve been washing my face with shampoo for like 10+ years now? And only when I’m in the shower? I usually sleep with my makeup on, too. I’m terrible at skincare.
