Miss Fox's Picture
Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!
About Miss Fox

In Search…of a Venue

October 1st, 2011 @ 2:05 pm by Miss Fox

Pretty much the instant Mr. Foxy and I got engaged, I ran out to buy a bajillion wedding magazines and started researching venues. I quickly realized that weddings are waaay more expensive than I thought they were. I mean, I knew they could be pricey, but couldn’t I do a great wedding with all the fixins near DC for under $10,000?

Oh shut up, Nelson.

That would be a big fat no. I already knew that we couldn’t afford a wedding where I grew up on Long Island, so I decided to look in upstate New York near where Foxy grew up. His parents currently live on one of the Finger Lakes, which I thought would be perfect because there are tons of wineries in the area, and I love me some wine. The only problem is that apparently the Finger Lake region of New York is a huge touristy area. Who knew? Not like I grew up in New York or anything. Bler.

Despite the fact that upstate New York was more expensive than I thought, I kept searching for places up there for us to look at on our July visit to his parents’. In all reality, the average prices up there were on par with or even above what the DC/Maryland area was offering. But it was pretty and Foxy seemed to really dig the fact that we’d get married upstate. Mostly because we could get Dinosaur BBQ (if you haven’t heard of them, look them up then drop what you’re doing and go get some NOW) to cater if we had it up there.

My dream wedding vision turned into us having a large tent with hanging lights and lanterns everywhere, preferably at a winery, and serving Dinosaur. They’d bring in a huge BBQ pit to cook all the food in, right there in front of everyone. It would have been amazeballs and it would have been so quintessentially us.

However, I realized that tents are expensive and many places wouldn’t let us bring in outside caterers; and I was liking the idea of having to travel seven hours to get to our wedding destination less and less as time went on. Plus, I really didn’t want to plan it from so far away. That just sucks. We ended up only looking at one place while visiting in July, and quickly crossed it off the list. It just wasn’t what we were looking for.

So I picked up my DC/Maryland search.

(Sidenote: Even though we’re literally about 20 minutes away, I crossed out Virginia because I don’t really like Virginia…nothing at all against anyone who lives there or likes it, but I have this weird name-association thing. Like, I refuse to eat from any restaurant named Lardo’s (it’s real, trust me) or Potbelly…it disturbs me. I really don’t want to live on a street like Gun Powder Lane because it’s so dismal. So I really don’t want to live in Virginia, or get married there, because, well…it looks and sounds like vagina to me. Sorry guys. It’s the truth. I know I have issues. I’m sure Vagina Virginia is a wonderful place to live.)

Back to business. My main criteria was that the catering cost per head had to be under a certain amount for me to even begin to look at it. I was so hellbent on having an outdoor wedding on a Saturday in June; no wonder good prices were/are hard to come by. I found a few places that could be possibilities if some adjustments were made on our part, but the ones I wanted we couldn’t afford, and the ones we could afford I didn’t want.

And then. Then! We found it. You know that feeling that you get when you find the right dress? Both Foxy and I got that when we found the right venue…

HAAAAAA! As a native Marylander (but I’m like a stones throw from VA) THAT IS THE FUNNIEST EXCUSE EVA FOR HATING ON VA. I always blame my “issues” with Virginia to the cops being ticket happy, but you’re reason is way cooler. Totally stealing that!

Can’t wait to hear more!! I’m am in the same situation! Everything decent is $150+ pp AND a minimum of 100+ people. There’s just no way we can afford this. So I’m looking into Long ISland and into NJ while my mother complains about ppl having to pay tolls to get over bridges. *sigh*

I’m sorry, I got distracted by the mention of Dinosaur BBQ…. what were you saying? (wipes drool off face) That sounds like my dream wedding (we are doing the BBQ thing, actually), but I’m glad you seem to have found an alternative that makes both of you happy!

We’re in South Jersey. Everywhere I looked was at least $125 per person with a minimum of 100 people plus if you wanted the ceremony there it was extra.

And I love the Finger Lakes. If it wasn’t 6 hours away, my fiance would have loved to have gotten married at Esperanza Mansion at Keuka.

VA is for lovers

I’m a little disappointed that weddingbee would allow this to be published. As a VA resident they may have just lost me as a reader and potential bee!

Your post is hysterical however, I do have to say that I am originally from MD and moved to VA about 5 years ago now which is where my wedding will be held in March. And believe you me, I’ve seen some insanely impressive venues in good old VA (none of which were on a Gunpowder Road). But you’re right about the name-lol. I still love living in Vag…I mean, Virginia personally and would never move back to MD in a million years! But to each their own :)

@VA is for lovers & @apribride: There are a ton of amazing venues in Virginia, I’m absolutely not putting down the state! Most of my venue searches came up with results in VA, but we just decided, for us, that we didn’t want to get married there. I’ve been to wineries over there and they are beyond gorgeous, and I love the parks and shopping (Tyson’s!). It’s just my personal thing, as stated. I’m really, really sorry if it came across the wrong way!

I feel your pain! I am an upstate NY bride (Syracuse to be exact), my wedding is one week away (yikes!), and it has turned out to be WAAAAAY more expensive than we originally planned on. We also ideally wanted an outdoor wedding with a tent and a huge BBQ, but have settled for Dinosaur at our rehearsal dinner since finding a place to set up a tent turned out to be more trouble than it was worth. I am glad you found your venue- it will all work out!

Hehehe… I know what you mean about the association thing. There is this new restaurant that opened up here about a week ago called Vegeria….Um, maybe they should have bounced that name off a couple people first because to me, it sounds like vagina/venerial disease or something like that :D

@VA is for lovers: I’m sorry, but really?? It’s not like she went out and killed your state bird (I looked it up, it’s a cardinal) or something. She said she had nothing against Virginia besides the name, and c’mon, it kinda does look like vagina. idk I think it’s funny :) and the fact that weddingbee “allowed” this to be posted makes me love it all the more.

I’m sorry, I just had to put in my $0.02.

Hahahah, actually my mother has this thing against West Virginia where she usually won’t even stop in the state when we drive by. She just doesn’t like it! And we always call it “West Vagina” which Mr. FC thinks is hilaaarious when he found out. So random. But they sound so similar! Vagina… Virginia….

Can’t wait to see pictures of the inside of your venue! Looks like it promises to be good!

VA is for lovers

I just don’t think it was necessary that is all. I’m a born and raised VA girl and didn’t like the way someone was talking about my place (I feel like saying the phrase from sweet home Alabama ” no one talks to my mama like that”), just like most people wouldn’t want someone talking about something they love either. Hmm maybe I should of just said bless your heart.
