Miss Doe's Picture
Miss Doe, Northern California Age and Occupation: 24, Real Estate Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Recycling Manager Engagement Date: December 25, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: Monte Verde Inn About Me: I’m a Rat Pack fan and a Christmas nut that loves to read, good wine, cheesy ’80s movies and ’90s sitcoms. My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. We are two old souls that are creating our long-awaited wedding with loads of tradition that blends our two styles into rustic elegance in the foothills of Northern California.

Something: Borrowed

October 3rd, 2011 @ 2:14 pm by Miss Doe

My “something borrowed” comes with a little bit of history and a whole lot of love. First off, I am going to share some information. Let me introduce you to my grandma and grandpa. These two lovebirds were married in June of 1960.

Hot dang, they look incredible. They have been married for over 50 years. In fact, here is a photo of them from their surprise 50th-wedding-anniversary party.

On a separate but similar note, here is a photo of my mom and dad when they were married in October of 1984.

My mom isn’t too happy about this picture hitting the good ol’ world wide web. I think she is crazy—they look quite dashing. Beautiful, young, and in love. It’s the whole ’80s thing that gets to her. But frankly, what ’80s bride didn’t have the big hair, blue eye shadow, and Princess Diana thing going on? They all did! You just have to embrace the era and know that you rocked it because you were in style.

Here they are on their surprise 25th-wedding-anniversary party. Yeah, my family really likes surprise parties.

{Hey look—it’s the entire Doe fam-bam.}

You’re probably wondering by now what exactly am I getting at with all of this and how this relates to my something borrowed. Well, let’s play a little guessing game, shall we? What do these two photos have in common? Look very closely…

OK, that was mean. They do have something in common, you just can’t see what it is. They are both wearing the same garter. That garter was a gift from my great-great-grandma to my grandma.

In 1960 my grandma wore that garter on her wedding day. Then in 1984 my mom also wore that same garter on her wedding day. This garter is 51 years old, and I am lucky enough that my grandma is letting me borrow it to wear for my wedding day. You would like to see a photo, wouldn’t you? OK, here she is:

Dainty, beautiful, and full of family history. I can promise you one thing, though—there will be no flinging of this garter. We’ll have to get a spare for that fun moment. But I can’t wait to wear it proudly and carry on the tradition.

What will your something borrowed be?

I’ve honestly never heard of a garter as being a ’something borrowed’, but it I love it. So different and so meaningful, again!

So funny - my parents were only married seven years after your grandparents! in ‘67! And I’m only 28! ;)

ha ha, I was totally looking at the two pictures saying to myself “it’s not the veil, it’s not the dress…I can’t tell!” so, you got me! :-)

Anyway, what an awesome tradition!

My something borrowed is a beautiful ruby and diamond ring that my dad gave my mom years ago in the beginning stages of their marriage. The rubies match my color scheme and I am so excited to wear a symbol of my parents love for one another on the day of my wedding!!

The garter is beautiful and means so much!! What a special way to celebrate so many generations of weddings :) Congrats!

@Miss Aardvark: I agree w/Miss Aardvark. Your grandpa totally has a modern, Ken hairdo’ going. He was so before his time! Your family is too cute. So nice that they have saved that garter for so long! I feel like it would be the first thing I’d blindly toss in the trash after awhile.

I love that you have a something borrowed that could double as your something old and has family and sentimental value.

My something borrowed was a bracelet from my best friend that was way to big but I wanted to wear it anyway. LOL

My something borrowed was also a garter that my friend lent me from her wedding 10 years ago. It was such an honour to wear it!

My something borrowed is going to be my great grandmother’s wedding rings. She passed away about ten years ago but she meant alot to me. Her rings are going to be attached to my bouquet.
