Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!

Paper Anniversary

October 4th, 2011 @ 9:49 am by Mrs. Barrettes

I’ve been struggling with what to get my husband for our first anniversary. The inspiration is paper and although I’ve seen ideas from tickets, to star dedications, those just weren’t lighting my fire. I had an a-ha moment when I woke up yesterday and I’m excited to put it together!

I’m going to attempt to construct the family crest for our (my new) last name. It seems fairly straightforward and I really like the meanings of the symbols used. I may include them on the back, along with a hand-written message for my honey.

Coat of Arms: Blue shield with a fesse between three leopard’s faces.

blue: valiant and hardy warrior who enterprises hazardous things by force and courage

fesse: military belt or girdle of honour; represents readiness to serve the public

leopard faces: truth and loyalty

I saw this crest associated with our name on 2 different sites, although as I kept digging I found more contenders.

There are many different spelling variations of our last name, and from the history I’ve read the first variation recorded in America is from Virginia, and that crest looks like this:

Hmm… obviously very different crests. Don’t mind the flourish surrounding the shield.

And one more, from another spelling and a new design entirely:

Well crap. This crest is from an Irish background, while the first two are of English origin. So I decided that I get to pick which one I like best since our anniversary is in one week and I’m not likely to find a definitive answer to which one is the “right” one.

I think I’m going with the blue one. I love the description of its contents and I don’t feel a strong connection to look for the meanings of the other two. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out!

What are you planning on getting your honey for your paper anniversary?

Miss Barrettes, I joined after you were married and didn’t see your blog until today when you posted this. I just read through a lot of it and I have to say, I loved everything you wrote! Your wedding was beautiful and congrats on your First Anniversary. I loved how genuine and happy your photos are. I’ve never seen ones so full of emotions like yours were. I think it is safe to say you were the world’s happiest person on that day!

This is a wonderful idea! I’m sure the hubs will love it - Mr Foxy is a huge family crest nut and even got the one from his mom’s side of the family tattooed! You must share your finished result :)

Clever idea, Mrs. Barrettes! I’ve got a few paper ideas bouncing around but am afraid to mention in print… Mr. PaC could stumble across them 6 months too soon and the surprise would be (mostly) ruined.

@soyjoy222: Hi! Thanks! I was world’s happiest person for sure. :)

@Mrs. Pain au Chocolat: I was hesitant to blog it, but then I remembered Mr. B never reads my blogs unless I put a post in his face. ;)

You can always check http://www.ancestry.com for information about your surname. This could also give you an indication as to what coats of arms other people with your name are using.

I think you have had an awesome idea for the paper anniversary, I say go for it. And I like the leopard head crest the best too.

Great idea! I just celebrated my first anniversary, and my paper gifts were 1) a photo album of our honeymoon, and 2) finally changing my name. What, I am lazy, don’t judge!
