Mrs. Parasol's Picture
Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.
About Mrs. Parasol

Hive, I’d like to introduce you to someone very special today: my Grandma P!

The Best Wedding Gift Ever: Or How I Ended Up With Two Diamond Rings : wedding rings san ramon 166338 1711121131018 1027803636 3637482 7483590 N 166338_

Isn’t she the epitome of grace and loveliness? Grandma P is amazing. She’s tough as nails (in the best possible sense), has a great sense of humor, and has been a constant source of strength, inspiration, and encouragement for me. She’s been there for every major event in my life and has cheered me on at every single one of them. She makes me feel like I can accomplish anything.

And on top of everything else, Grandma P is responsible for giving me the best wedding gift ever.

At my bridal shower, Grandma P pulled me aside to talk to me in private, where she proceeded to tell me all about this amazing gift.

You see, prior to marrying my grandpa, Grandma P was in another serious relationship. In their last year together, he gave her a diamond ring, which she wore on her right hand. After they split up, she put the ring away in a drawer and never wore it again. And there it sat until the day of my bridal shower, when Grandma P dug it out and presented it to me.

Grandma P said I was under no pressure or obligation to take the diamond ring, but she and my grandpa wanted to give it to me as a wedding present. I was in awe. Let me tell you, hive, the ring is gorgeous. It’s a simple yellow gold band with a round solitaire diamond. It’s actually really similar to my engagement ring, and I instantly loved it.

Aside from the fact that it’s a gorgeous diamond ring, Grandma P actually had a very good reason for wanting to give me this ring. She explained that, at some point, most woman want to upgrade their engagement ring and/or wedding band. Somewhere along the way, after 10+ years together or a few kids, a lot of women feel like it’s time for an upgrade.

But most women simply upgrade the engagement ring/wedding band they already have, which often means swapping out the original diamond for a newer (and often bigger) diamond. This is where Grandma P’s diamond ring comes in. You see, it’s from Tiffany & Co., and as such, it can be traded in for an upgrade at any time. Basically, Grandma P wanted to give me her ring so that, if I ever feel like I want to upgrade my wedding ring set, I can still keep my original rings and diamonds and simply upgrade her ring instead.

I was speechless, to say the least. I mean, this is one of the most amazing gifts I have ever received. I couldn’t believe how generous and thoughtful Grandma P was, and I immediately told her I would be thrilled to have her diamond ring.

Right now, Mr. Parasol and I haven’t decided what we’re going to do with Grandma P’s diamond ring. We’re not sure if the upgrade policy only applies to getting a bigger diamond ring, but if not, we’ve thought about using this ring to get Mr. Parasol his wedding band upgrade sooner. Even if we can only trade it in for a bigger, better diamond ring, we certainly want to wait a few years because I’m not itching for an upgrade anytime soon.

Currently, the ring quietly sits on our dresser most of the time. Though sometimes (like now) I take it out and wear it as a right hand ring. It’s just so beautiful that it’s hard not to wear.

More than anything, I’m still completely blown away by Grandma P’s generosity. I’m really lucky to have such an amazing woman in my life.

And because I can’t write this much about a diamond ring without showing you some pictures, I’ll leave you with some much-deserved ring porn.

What a heartwarming story and amazing gift! You have such an amazing Grandma, and a great way around a tough decision. I know I grow sentimentally attached to things, and its hard to imagine parting with the ring you actually got during your proposal. At the same time, upgrading later can be the perfect symbol for how far your marriage has come. Grandma P. Is letting you have your cake, and giving you another one to eat!

Breathtaking rings and story. I love the idea that you would use it to upgrade Mr. P’s band. Unique, unexpected, and unselfish decision on your part-what marriage is about!

Ahhhhhhh awesome! Now now now, I want to know: how will you wear them on your fingers? Together? Separate? One on one hand and one on the other?

@KLJ: So true! I didn’t think of it that what, but you’re so right! And I’m happy Grandma P thought to give me this gift because, like you, I am sentimental about things like my engagement ring and want to keep it for a long time!
@Miss Seal: Awwww, thank you! I’ve always thought my grandma is one of the most stunning women ever. :)
@Cupcake2012: You are so sweet! Thanks so much! And it’s really easy to think of using this ring for Mr. P because he did such a good job with my rings–they are so beautiful that I don’t want/need to upgrade anytime soon!
@Miss Funnel Cake: Well, I tried all the permutations yesterday! And it was fun! The stacked look was a little much for me (but this is coming from a girl who presently is only wearing her wedding set and not other form of jewelry), but it’s perfect as a righthand ring. I think I’m going to go with that, but I need to get it sized down–I definitely don’t want to lose that ring!

Your Grandma P sounds like an amazing woman and that is such a beautiful story!

I don’t want to take away from your happiness but please be aware that the Tiffany & Co. engagement ring upgrade does not allow you to trade up at any time you choose. My mother offered me her Tiffany ring when I got engaged last year to trade up for something bigger but I was told by Tiffany that after a certain amount of time (I think 10 or 15 years) the ring is considered an heirloom and is not eligible for a trade it.
