The Proposal That Wasn’t

October 5th, 2011 @ 8:38 am by Miss Warbler

Our engagement story doesn’t involve flash mobs, rose petals or candlelit dinners. But according to Mr. Warbs, it almost did. Sort of. During the weeks leading up to the proposal Mr. Warbs started dropping not-so-sly hints. Whenever he has a surprise for me, he’ll ask a “discreet” question. When my iPod broke, Mr. Warbs called me to ask which model it was because he wanted to buy one for his dad. His dad who can barely use a cell phone, let alone a mp3 player. Riiight. So even though the actual proposal was a surprise, I saw it coming from a mile away.

The week of the proposal, Mr. Warbs suggested that we go to a Christmas boat light show in Naples the following Sunday. Lights, music and a spectacular show on the water? Sounded like the perfect scene for a proposal to me. That and the fact that he kept asking questions like “How would you want me to propose?” was a dead giveaway.

Little did I know, the event had already taken place the previous Sunday. Right about now, you’re probably commending Mr. Warbs on throwing me off the scent. Unfortunately for him, Mr. Warbs is not that sneaky! He got his Sundays mixed up. Unless he could find a flying Delorean to take him back in time, the Christmas boat light show proposal would not be happening.

So I was thrown completely off guard when on Tuesday December 7th (a day that will live in a different kind of infamy) Mr. Warbs proposed to me in our bathroom. Yes, you read that right, in our bathroom. We had just finished having a late dinner at home and after cleaning up I went into the bathroom to wash my face and wrap my hair up. Out of nowhere, Mr. Warbs came into the bathroom and got down on one knee. Now Hive, half of my hair was wrapped and the rest was falling all over my face. I was completely caught off guard. When he got down on his knee, I screamed and backed away. After I got over my shock, I walked back over to him and he said “I had a better plan, I promise. But I got the ring today and I just couldn’t wait.” He was sweet, but I almost said, “You couldn’t wait until I got out of the bathroom?” Just kidding, Mr. Warbs. I said yes! Duh!

I love him for planning everything out, but I’m pretty sure if things had gone according to plan he still would have proposed as soon as he got the ring. It must feel like you’re holding a bomb, it could go off at any moment. I know I wouldn’t have been able to keep that secret! Here is my lovely ring, by the way.

Sorry for the poor image quality! That was a wine induced photo!

Personal Photo

So, I never imagined that our proposal story would include a bathroom, but a proposal in itself is a grand romantic gesture. Who cares where or how it happens? Besides, now I can tease Mr. Warbs about it for the rest of our lives. Ha!

Was your proposal unconventional, or in a funny place?

Sounds familiar! Mr Ticket did similar. He proposed to me in his apartment, because he had just gotten the ring and was scared to lose it haha. I think it’s romantic. =)

I was proposed to on the sidewalk in front of my apartment at 7 30 am on a Friday morning. We got a lot of strange looks from people on the street! It was really sweet though becuase he didnt know of another way to surprise me! He actually spoke to my boss the week before so he could get me off work and surprised me with a trip to San Antonio for the weekend. :)

ha! I love love love your story!! :)
How cute is that, you made me smile as I was reading your story!!

Hubby proposed in the house… kind of conventional, although I was expecting a bit later, since the week after, we were going to Napa Valley (perfect place right?) but I totally saw it coming so that’s why he did it before, he wanted to keep me off-guard!! BUT I threw him off-guard too the day of the proposal! HA! -You see, I am always late… he knows it, I am Mexican, so I just use my nationality as an excuse (although I do have to say, most of us Mexicans, at least the ones I know, are always late…)so, he had just come from work that day, but earlier that day he called his sister and asked her to come to the condo and set up candles EVERYWHERE, (honestly I’m surprised the fire alarm didn’t go off! lol!). I kind of knew something was up though, he never calls me during the day, while I’m at work, especially when HE is at work, and that day, he call me like 7 times, just to say hi… then, the last time he called me, he says “okay then I will see you in about an hour babe….more like 2 hours YOUR time”, so I thought to myself, I’m gonna prove YOU wrong for once and show up on time! ha!, so I called as I was pulling into the garage and he says, did you leave your house yet? and I said, I am already here fool!!, so he got really nervous and told me to hold on for about 5 more mins… I was like, what is going on???? and he said, just give me 5 more minutes please!! so I waited and then when I opened the door, he runs to the door, wearing a suit, all the lights off and all candles on, was playing “fly me to the moon” (the song I always said would be my wedding song), so I looked at him and started crying! (obviously at this point, there was NO doubt as far as what was going on!), so he asks me to dance with him, as I’m still crying, and when the song was over, he brings me to the bedroom… more candles, roses, and on the center of his dresser, “the box”… so he goes on one knee, said something first that for the life of me, 3secs after he said it, I could not remember (yeah, I was that nervous, excited, etc… lol!) and then I said yes… :)

thank you for your post, and for bringing back beautiful memories!!

My fiance was the opposite. He had the ring for 5 MONTHS! He wanted to surprise me so when I planned a day trip to downtown Chicago he decided to ask me that day. I basically planned my own proposal! :D

Love it! Similar to my story, in that it was expected but not expected at that moment, and I looked kind of like a hot mess, in our apartment. I think it’s so sweet - just the two of you doing your thing, and then bam! Proposal :)

Sounds great! Very intimate, and a cute story to tell. My fiance proposed to me in a Starbucks that we had our first date in. While it was very sweet, I balled like a baby and was so embarrased, and of course everyone in the shop was staring. I couldn’t wait to get out of there and wished I was at home, even if it was in my bathroom!

Very sweet. Mr. P totally forgot to ask the question. Just held the box out to me like look, shiny, want? It definitely must feel like holding a bomb.

I have no idea! He had his little sister (who is my MOH) save it for him so I wouldn’t find it…

OK, I adore your story, Warbler! I love that you saw the proposal coming, I love that Mr. W had something else planned and then got the dates mixed up, and I loved that he just had to ask you and couldn’t wait until you were out of the bathroom. This will be such a fun story to tell your kids!

And Mr. P totally spoiled the coming proposal surprise for me. I knew he had gone to look at rings by himself, and he came back and was all, “I’m not going to tell you what happened. But I did have to call the credit card company when I tried to buy something and they put a fraud check on my card.” Yeah, that was a dead giveaway!

I think too often people get caught up in the “how he proposed” just because they can make for good stories - the only thing that matters is that there was a proposal and an affirmative answer! :)

Side note: I paddle with my dragon boat in that parade every year!! :)
