Miss Porcupine's Picture
Miss Porcupine, NYC/Lancaster, PA Age and Occupation: 26, Sales Coordinator/Publishing Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Assistant Manager/Sales Engagement Date: August 8, 2010 Wedding Date: March 2012 Venue: Riverdale Manor About Me: I'm a born and bred New Yorker with a love/hate relationship for the city I have always called home. Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. The future hubs and I met in college, settled in New York, and decided to go with a rustic/peacock infused wedding in Lancaster, PA, right near his hometown. Come the big day, we will be together 5 years, and we're looking forward to making it official!
About Miss Porcupine

This might be a good time to start doing likeee actual stuff for the wedding, and perhaps stop whining. Since it seems, after all the vendors are booked, there are still several hundred things to do. One of those things would be invitations. Oh, you freakin’ expensive invitations, you. How I love/loathe you and your paper goodness. And, no, I do not think it is a good idea to subject myself to a “print yourself” or a “design yourself” venture. Mostly because I hate when I toss printers across the room—there are just too many pieces of plastic to pick up afterward.

Moving right along…I’m still unsure if I want to go the full blown peacock route. Yes, that is our “theme” and all, but we also have a blue/green situation going on. Would a peacock invitation be peacock overkill? I’m trying to stay away from having the actual bird on anything. I just like the idea of the feathers. And, I could include a feather in a twine tied-up simple blue invitation. I don’t necessarily need the peacock feather imagery on it.

I originally thought, “oh, we’ll just order from Wedding Paper Divas or the like” because that’s cheap, right? WRONG.

Those online invitation sites are cheapER, but certainly not cheap. I would say their prices are pretty standard if you don’t want to go ballz out with letterpress or other more expensive design options. They certainly do beat the prices of some of these invitation shops around New York. But, the savings are certainly not SO significant that I can go out and buy a new Coach tote with the difference. (I have not bought a new purse since getting engaged, 10 POINTS for ME!) My original idea of a budget for invitations was $300. Haha, oh pre-wedding planning Porcupine, you are fun-E.

The new plan is to keep it reasonable. I have a few options so far that I love (I say I and not we because Mr. Porcupine mostly will nod and agree to any invitation I show him).

Invitations by Little Spark Creations via Etsy

I love the last one the best for obvious peacock feather obsession reasons. I didn’t originally want to go the pocket fold route. I feel like it’s a little too formal for the rustic look we want for our wedding. I’m still on the fence on the whole thing. I can’t order anything until I know our menu options after our November tasting, so I have a few more weeks to weeble wobble.

Anyone have a great invitation shop recommendation? Is a peacock invitation TOO much peacock?

The last one is really pretty, but the third one is my favorite by a long shot. Also I can totally relate with the printer throwing mess. Its just not worth the cleanup sometimes….

It’s def not to much I love the idea and keeping the theme. It’s awesome.

Also try 123prints. They are a little bit cheaper than weddingpaperdivas and I got my invites and everything from them and LOVED it. And saved TONS of money!

I felt the same way about invites! THIS much for paper? I found a great deal on invitationconsultants.com, I got something on the simpler side but they have alot to choose from. They send coupons by email alot too.

Oo, I love the Wedding Paper Divas one with the feather!
Not too much peacock, very nice but not too formal, and the formatting gives it a little untraditional structure.

Love the peacock ones! But, if you want to spend less, consider buying from Michael’s and printing them yourself. I know it’s not for everyone, but for us the invites weren’t a huge priority so we wanted to save the money. Luckily I went when there was a sale and got 150 invitations (plus a few spools of ribbons bc I didn’t like the color of ribbon our invites came with) for $150 total (yes including tax!).

Ok this is off subject but I happened to scroll across your icon while the page loaded this morning. What a surprise to see Lancaster, PA in your location. I checked twice to make sure I wasn’t imagining it. I’m a Lancaster bride as well and I feel like its rare to find someone from the area on any planning site. Just wanted to wish you luck in everything. I’ll make sure to follow your posts! Great choice on the venue!

I purchased my invitations from TheamericanWedding.com I purchased invites and RSVP cards for around $200. You can order samples and if you spend over $175 you receive 15% off your purchase. They were assembly required but everything was so easy and they turned out great!

I actually really love the second one - the shape is different and I think the feather is just perfect! A friend is doing a peacock color theme as well and is gluing a feather onto the invite, and it looks great!! Definitely not overkill.

Have you looked on etsy? There are some ridiculously expensive invitations on there, but there are also some much less expensive options, which are still cute. A lot of them allow you to order a sample, as well, so that you can see and feel the quality of the paper and envelopes that they use.

I got 80 invitation sets, which include the invitation, envelope, rsvp card and envelope (or rsvp postcard), and cute matching return address labels, all for around $150.

Hi there, you mention in your post the possibility of including a feather with your invitations. If you do consider this route, one word of caution…stick to your great twine tied idea!

I used glue dots to stick the feather to our wedding invitations…with mixed results. Some of the feathers ended up looking like the poor bird had been drowned before being plucked!

I found the batch of feathers I ordered to be pretty delicate and not a uniform shape. If I had my wedding again, I certainly wouldn’t choose this style.

Best of luck in making a decision, I love number five!

I don’t think it would be too much to have a feather or two on your invitations. After all, you want your invites to have the same feel as the rest of the wedding. But if you feel like that’s overkill, you could also accomplish that by using peacock-y colors instead of the actual feather.

My sister designs stationery and also had a peacock themed wedding! She has a shop on etsy: http://www.peacockprinting.etsy.com

You should take a look at her shop! She has a bunch of different designs and is always willing to work on custom orders if you have something specific in mind… Good luck!!

If you really like the last one from etsy but you don’t like the pocketfold just contact the seller. You might be able to get it without that and it might even be a little cheaper. The great thing I like about etsy is how willing some of the buyers are to customize order just for you. =)

I love the idea of incorporating a real peacock feather! The designs with the feathers look great, definitely not overkill.

I was despairing as well at the cost of invitations. So incredibly expensive! Anyway, I swear this is not a shameless plus for WeddingBee but if you look at the top of the page, you will see they have a tab for invitations. And people, they were RIDICULOUSLY cheap. Like under 300 dollars for 150 invitations that had thermography ink, printed return addresses, reception cards, response cards and printed response envelopes. Granted, we went for a simple ecru paneled invitation with a scroll at the top but were able to customize the script. They looked great, we got tons of compliments, and we saved a ton. Maybe you could do something like that and then jazz it up with a cool envelope liner (Paper Source has awesome paper and shows you how to do these).

I have a peacock wedding as well and I did the peacock themed invitation. I did, however, only use the feather. My invitation is ivory metallic with a peacock feather on it. Then the backing is metallic paper with peacock feathers printed on. It’s subtle enough, but still peacock-y. I love my invitations!

vistaprint has some on there. Several different styles and they’re fairly inexpensive also.

I ordered my invitations online at Invitations by Dawn, they are affordable and they are the only website that has the perfect watercolor invitation I want :) Number 5 is the more peacocky theme :)
