About Miss Dalmatian

Best. Fortune. Ever.

October 8th, 2011 @ 10:55 am by Miss Dalmatian

My dad was once eating Chinese food with some coworkers, and one of his friends opened a fortune cookie that said: “Don’t compare yourself to others, you’ll only be disappointed.” Sounds fine at first, but when you stop to think about it, it is quite mean! We always joked that it was the worst fortune ever.

Then my sister told me about a girl who opened a fortune cookie, and on the little slip of white paper there was not an inspirational message but instead an advertisement for American Airlines. Can you imagine the disappointment?! OK, maybe not everyone shares my level of excitement for reading their fortune, but still, that’s pretty lame.

Now that we have covered the contenders for the worst fortune ever (if you’d like to see more check this out), let me share with you a little story about the night I received the Best. Fortune. Ever! You may know where I am going with this, but just pretend to be surprised as you read on.

There are many things for which Mr. Dalmatian and I share a love. One of these things is General Tso’s chicken. Our passion for Chinese take-out blossomed during our sophomore year of college, when we started a tradition of ordering it every Sunday night. Since graduation, we haven’t stuck to our weekly regimen, but we are still frequent customers at our favorite Chinese take-out joint.

So, when Mr. Dalmatian suggested we get an order of General Tso’s on a random Wednesday night in April, I didn’t think twice. When we got home with the food, he made us each a plate. Looking back, this was the only thing that was slightly out of the ordinary (as our normal routine was grabbing a fork and digging right into the boxes).

When it came time to read my fortune, I was excited as usual (seriously, I love fortune cookies). Little did I know the tiny thrill of unfolding the paper was going to lead to the greatest excitement of my life!

Personal Photo / My heart still skips a beat when I see this!

When I read the words “Will you marry me?” I couldn’t believe it was really happening. Then I looked up and saw Mr. Dalmatian down on one knee with a ring box and it started to sink in. I immediately said (well, to be more accurate, squealed) YES and jumped into his arms! I then called every family member I could think of and my closest friends. Mr. Dalmatian patiently listened to me tell the story over and over and smiled as I frolicked around the room.

Best. Fortune. Ever. : wedding nashville proposal Engaged engaged

Personal Photo / Celebration dinner the night after we got engaged!

I had driven myself crazy in anticipation of when we would get engaged and how he would do it. In the end, I could not have dreamed up a more perfect proposal. When my fantasy finally turned into reality and I had a stunning ring on my finger, I was filled with sheer joy. With time, the crazy excitement has faded, but I am left with the most wonderful feeling in the world: true happiness.

Any other entries for the worst or best fortune ever?

We once read one that said “You will find three missing socks in the next week”… and it wasn’t even at a place that gives out funny fortunes! Mine that night was something really typical!

Great story!! It made me a little swoony. :D

Once my brother was opening a fortune cookie and somehow it exploded… not in fire, but you know, into basically powder. I was sitting with him standing behind me and I got cookie fragments all over my head :P We all laughed about it, but then when we found the slip of paper it said, “You will be showered in good fortune”! O_o *insert eerie music* lol
Heehee What a cute story! Congrats!

So sweet! Mr. Dalmatian is very creative! I haven’t really had any lame fortunes…but the other day I got an awesome one that told me “it’s okay to have dessert at least 5 times a week. You deserve it.” hahaha. So of course I had to listen to my fortune, right? ;)

I LOVE fortune cookies, and this is clearly the greatest one ever…

My worst fortune ever: “Here we go. Moo Shu Cereal for breakfast with duck sauce.”

Can I tell you how disappointed I was?

This is such a cute story! I love it! YAY! I also started trying to call everyone like a mad-woman as soon as he popped the question.

That’s really sweet. My fiance once got a fortune that said, “A thing of great beauty will bring you great joy.” He gave it to me, and I still have it. :)

Mine was “Your love of gardening will take on new meaning in your life.” This was in my first year as a graduate student in botany.

My husband once got one that said, “Promote literacy - buy a box of fortune cookies” :)

Hi and welcome, Miss Dalmation! I love your story!

A Chinese restaurant going in across from my apartment has been the best AND worst fortune I’ve had in awhile haha

My best fortune was 5 years ago: “Give a kiss to the person sitting next to you”. The person next to me was my future fiance!

It was very sweet. He did later admit that he came up with it by Googling “how to propose”, haha. He said he scrolled through a bunch of suggestions until he saw one that reminded him of us. Works for me!

I have kept one particular fortune with me for years, always tucked away in whatever wallet I have in my purse.
“The weather is wonderful.”
I always take it more figuratively than literally. It always makes me smile.

My favorite was, “Alas! The onion you are eating is someone else’s water lily.” I actually really don’t know if that’s a good or a bad fortune.

But yours is better. ;)

What a great proposal story - potentially stupid question, how did he get it into the cookie?

To make the best fortune - add the words “in bed” to the end of any fortune, guaranteed to get a laugh anyway!

Oh my word, your proposal is so sweet and sounds perfect for you two! It is just too cute! And it totally made me think of how the guy in Bride Wars proposes to Anne Hathaway. Though it sounds like Mr. D did a much better job!

Also, I LOVE the Chinese food wedding cake and think you should at least have it as a groom’s cake. Yes??

@Mrs. Teaspoon: He bought it off of Ebay - we actually had an second one to eat later because they sent him an extra in case it broke in the mail. It added to the surprise because it was in the plastic package and everything - if it had been a homemade fortune cookie I definitely would have been suspicious!

@Mrs. Parasol: I know! The cake is amazing, and looks delicious in more ways than one! Haha
