Hello hive. I hope y’all had swell weekends! Mr. Funnel Cake was on military leave from Friday evening until Sunday evening and during his visit we DIY-ed the crap out of our wedding programs, which I promise to share soon!
I somehow managed to dislocate my arm on Saturday with my loose joints, so all of Sunday was spent forgetting (and remembering) that my arm is dysfunctional. But despite that, I still managed to play around with makeup and do some more DIY looks to show you. And since you asked about what products I was using last time, I thought I’d show some pictures of the eye shadow palettes I’m using after my massive summertime Sephora haul.
Stila “In the Light” palette from Sephora.
Stila “In the Light” palette from Sephora. These shadows are very rich, but I feel like I have trouble blending them. I’m still working with them but I feel like it’s hit or miss. It’s probably me that’s the problem. Also, I’m not quite sure… but I think some of the shadows irritate my eyes and I can’t tell which ones are the culprits. (Maybe the glitter ones?)
Sephora Almost Nude 09 palette from Sephora. I used this palette for the natural eyes look #2 of my last DIY makeup. It’s a very nice subtle palette for work, but I’m not sure it’s bold enough for wedding day. See how light it is on my hand? There’s barely a difference between the colours on the right.
Surprisingly, this smoky eyes palette from Sephora is no longer available. I got it for $10 before they ran out of them and I LOVE it! I used this palette for the smoky eyes in look #1 of my last DIY makeup. (I don’t use the dinky brush that came with this palette and neither should you.)
Stila Haute in the Hamptons palette from Sephora. I haven’t done an eye photo shoot with this palette yet, but I use the blush all the time so it’s in the first makeup trial I did this weekend. I do like the eye palette and I have fun using the blue, but it’s not necessarily wedding material for me.
OK, on to the trials! Please excuse my jam jams attire and greasy Sunday hair. I only washed my face for this. And I look beejeezus tired for some reason.
Look #3:
I listened to what you guys said last time about liking look #2 but wanting to see the eyes pumped up more and the lips toned down. So let’s get started!
No makeups.
Left foundation and powder, right contouring.
Left I put on a lot more blush and then right I toned it down. You guys said you wanted to see more blush last time. It shows up on camera now, but honestly it looks borderline creepy in reality. It’s a LOT of blush for me. I’m not sure I can handle so much on the wedding day. I used the two blushes from the Stila Haute in the Hamptons palette.
Left I added the same lipstick as last time, but toned it down a lot with blotting. Right I used the same Almost Nude 09 by Sephora palette as last time, but I tried to make it a bit more smoldering. God… I’m still not sure about the blush. I look kinda whorish above.
Left with eyeliner and mascara. Right, what do you think? Is it a little creepy? The only colour dark enough for contouring in this palette is really the liner… and it doesn’t seem to blend well with the other colours. Too much greyness. It looks cold on top of the peaches and mauves.
But I digress… here are the “pretty pictures”:
It’s OK, but I just felt like this look was so-so-so. I just don’t like it!
Look #4:
I decided instead of testing out a more subtle smoky eye that I would see what my “In the Light” palette by Stila can do. It’s got so many lovely shimmers and colours I thought it would be good for a wedding.
Left, bare face. Right, foundation and powder. Honestly, is it possible that I look worse after washing off the other makeup? I look sooo dang tired. Look away hive! Scroll away from the serial killer photos!
Left, I applied a more subtle blush than look #3 with some very old Estée Lauder blush. Right, I got sick of how dead my lips looked and had to put something on ASAP. I decided to try the lipstick from look #1 in full colour. No blotting! (It’s a lot more intense this way!)
Now eye shadow and mascara. I used the Stila palette, sticking mainly to browns. I started out with mattes and then added in some of the glittery colours, like the coppery brown on the bottom right of my hand, just above the matte brown. And because someone suggested, I did try to fill in my brow colour a bit. What do you think? I never ever do this when applying makeup, so it makes me a bit nervous that I’ll be a big ol’ painted eyebrow lady.
Pretty pictures for look #4:
I liked how this look turned out much better.
Problem is that the eye shadow is slightly irritating my eyes, which resulted in a runny nose on Sunday afternoon. That’s not really great, so maybe I’ll try to just avoid the Stila palette.

Look #2:
Look #3: (I’m sorry these last two are blurry!)
Look #4:
So even though look #3 is blurry, you can tell that that blending sucks. And that look #4 is much better. But I still love smoldering smoky eye #1! Ahhh. I’m so lost. You guys, I’m honestly applying different eye combos every day for work testing things out. I’m so unsure of myself! Sometimes the outcome is great, but sometimes I fail and I’m unhappy with my eye makeup the whole day. (Or just wish I could do it differently.)
Here’s some side-by-sides to help compare:
Who else is DIYing their makeup? Have any tips to share?
