Something Old and Borrowed?

October 10th, 2011 @ 4:11 pm by Miss Petit Four

Does anyone know if it’s against the rules to combine these two?

My veil is something that was always pretty important to me. I knew exactly what I wanted—lacy and super-long! I longed for that beautiful lace edge of a classic mantilla veil and I wasn’t going to stop until I found one that was perfect for my dress.

So, the search began. I scoured Etsy, eBay, bridal salons here in town, and even Craigslist. FYI, all the bridal shops we went to were ridiculously overpriced. $1500 for a veil? Uh, no thanks. I was starting to think that my mantilla dreams would be dashed. Then, my super-awesome aunt swooped in to save the day.

She offered to let me use her cathedral length mantilla veil for my big day! Let me tell y’all, it’s gorgeous. Check it out.

Doesn’t she look pretty?! Love the sleeves :)

The only problem is that the veil has that ’70s hat style that we all know and love so well.

I’m hoping I will be able to find someone who will be able to remove it. Does anyone know if this can be done? Or should I just rock the mini hat? Just kidding. I’m totally not doing that. Hehe.

Have you ever had a veil altered? Who did you turn to?

I think you can make you something old and borrowed whatever you want! Tradition has changed so much, btw the veil is amazing-minus the hat ;)

I make veils and this is such an easy project if you (or a friend) have basic sewing skills.

First, before you cut and for a guide, gather the veil, near the hat, so that its the width that you want. Pin it so its easier to handle and sew a straight stitch.

Then, cut the veil about an inch below the stitch.

Next, sew it to a comb, headband, or other hair affixing apparatus. Here, you can loop the stitch to gather the extra inch of veil, or you can leave the inch as is, some people like the poof.

Then your done! You can hot glue pearls, rinestones, what have you, onto the comb for something extra. If you want the veil to lay flat, that a bit more difficult since it is already gathered.

It so beautiful and hope it works for you!

Hah I love that picture of you! I am of no help but I feel like someone should be able to remove the veil from the hat.. and you can totally double dip your old and borrowed! Doe just wrote a few posts about doing the same thing with her blue and borrowed ;)

I altered my mom’s veil. She also had a weird cap thing and it was fairly easy to detach as the tulle was just stitched on the cap. I very carefully cut the threads attaching the veil to the cap and off came the veil part (still gathered). However, my mom’s veil was also 2 layers and I only wanted 1 layer so I carefully cut the top layer off where the gathering stitching was. I then attached the bottom layer to a plastic comb I had decorated. Done! A beautiful veil that cost me about $10 vs $300.

I would just look very closely where the veil attaches to the cap and try to figure out how it’s attached. It might be as simple as cutting a few threads to detach the veil. The harder part will probably be figuring out what to attach it to so you can wear it and how to do that.

This pic made me laugh :)))) Thanks for the smiles! Good luck! It cannot be too hard. In the right hands, im sure it can be made into a great veil. I wish I had more technical advice!

She looks like you. Pretty.
I agree, you should be able to do this yourself fairly easy.

the veil is gorgeous and it doesn’t look stained or yellowed at all! that’s awesome.
If you’re very careful I think you can do it yourself - although you could also contact a seamstress

Beautiful veil, you know, once the hat thing comes off.

I am wearing my mother’s Cap Veil from the 70’s - her “hat” is a bit smaller than the picture of yours looks. The lady at the dress shop helped me figure out how to remove the cap. But then I decided against it. I am going to wear the veil as is (it is beautiful) during the ceremony and then just wear a simple hair piece at the reception. The other fun thing is that I am not telling my fiance about the veil. Our “pre-ceremony” photos will be taken without it and then he will see me again for the first time with veil at the ceremony. Surprise!

My mom’s veil (and dress for that matter) look identical to your Aunt’s! I’m planning on having it removed from the hat and it also has a blusher that comes up over the front of the hat that I’m getting removed too. I’m putting the veil on a comb and just wearing it for the ceremony and pictures because it’s so long! The people who are doing my bridal alterations are also taking care of the veil- I just need to find somewhere to get it cleaned before that. Good luck!

That picture of you is so cute/funny! Love it

I think you just need really big hair to ballance out the big “hat” part! :)

My veil was altered a little bit. I actually kept my mom’s ‘cap’ on it…but it’s definitely smaller and less noticeable than yours. I’m sure it can be taken off though…maybe add some clips to it instead?

I had something that was almost the exact same from my mother. I took off the 70s hat and just sewed the veil part to a regular metal comb. I used a ripper to rip the satin lining from the hat because the actual veil part was sewn inside. Then I had just the veil and beuatiful lace. Then, I just attached it to the comb. Anyone that does dress alterations could probably do this for you. My alterations lady offered to do it for me, but I just wanted to do it myself. I’ll go post a photo to my vio of the finished product so you can see how mine turned out.

I did that, too! My mom had a birdcage veil when she got married, and it was attached to a little hat that kind of looks like those boob inserts for swimsuits…. Anyway. I just painstakingly cut each thread holding the thing together (making sure to not cut the veil, of course!) and then shaped it to the form I liked.
