Half-Assed

October 11th, 2011 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Skunk

I wish I had cute handwriting a la Mrs. Seashell. Everyone I talked to spoke about how easy it was just to buy a calligraphy pen and go to town. There was always the ’tracing’ method. And my fiance left me a Leroy Lettering Set before he left for Madison. I opened this thing and almost started crying for all the pieces and confusion! Turns out it’s some sort of drafting tool that will probably sit under my bed until we decide to move.

Y’all, my handwriting is sucky at best. I’m working towards being a doctor, so I think it’s kind of a requirement. But I was constantly berated that I just couldn’t print the addressed on the already nicely placed labels.

It just seemed so logical. Put the addresses in Excel, collate, and print. Voila. Unfortunately, if I wanted to keep my reputation as a true Southern lady (Ha. HAHAHA!) I had to hand write them. But if I was going to hand write them, I just couldn’t justify doing anything fancy. After all, who keeps envelopes?

So with the help of FSIL Skunk, we hand addressed 85 invitations in less than two hours. Record? Probably. Pretty? Nope. But ya know what? Everyone got their invitation, and I can guarantee you that all the envelopes have made their way into the trash.

What’s your stance when it comes to handwriting your invitation envelopes? Is it a must, or is printing just fine to you?

I am going with a printed envelope with some sort of fancy font.

Too many years of Southern “rules” drilled into my head–wedding invites (and all other personal correspondence, for that matter) must be hand-written. Doesn’t have to be calligraphy, but definitely not computer printed.

Maybe that’s why I was so compulsive about my handwriting in high school? (Seriously, I’d rewrite entire homework assignments if I didn’t like my handwriting.)

I’m going with printed labels…ultra lazy and I’m goooood with it. Ooo this must mean the Skunk invites are coming soon!

Two hours?! I’m impressed and jealous! We’re hand addressing with the same hope that the envelopes get tossed right after opening.

Sorry to say that I ran all of those envelopes through the home printer with a fancy font and didn’t think twice about it. LOL

I’m sure that Emily Post would have my head on a stick but like you said who keeps envelopes?

I hand-addressed our RSVP envelopes and the invitations, and all of our thank-you envelopes. Our invitation envelopes were a deep red, so I used silver ink. Aside from that, in retrospect, I wish I had just put them through the printer and used a coordinating font. Looks so much nicer than my handwriting and is still calligraphy, basically.

On the upside, I’ve decided to use the printer for our escort cards, while I was originally going to do those by hand, too.

I am not going to use labels but I do think I will use a pretty script font to address each envelope. And then there is the inner envelope… oh how to handle that I do not know. My handwriting is not the best. Should I use same font Oh so Pretty. Or squiggly handwriting of mine.

Woohoo! I actually started hand addressed our STD’s and got about halfway through until I realized that my handwriting made me want to hurl. So I got label paper and just made labels. Those big ol’ sheets of label paper that you can cut to be any size and shape are aweeeesome!

Haha, so true! Why I stress over this myself when it ends up in the trash, I do not know…

Would have printed, but I got dark envelopes. So I hand wrote them in gold ink. Not super pretty, but legible.

I printer ours on an ink jet printer. But I obsessed about the font, the size/scale, etc. They looked so “real” that I actually had people ask who did the calligraphy!

I fell for the rule of no outside envelopes should be printed…but there’s no rule that you can’t trace the printing right? I printed my RSVP envelopes with coordinating fonts and my outer envelopes i printed on my dark purple envelopes and then traced it with a gold pen. I also bought a self address rubber stamp and embossed it. They actually didn’t come out bad! My shower thank yous on the other hand have my terrible handwriting so i’m going to just print my return labels and call it a day :)

I’m stressing over this issue right now! We have both an outside and inside envelope too. Gah!

I totally did not understand this handwritten rule. It took me just as long to type out all the addresses for labels and then get them printed, so I think it counts :)

I don’t get the handwritten thing either. A computer script is nicer than my handwriting, so why would I not put the envelope through the printer?

I do have to admit I hate labels though.

I’ve gotten two wedding invites in the past few months, and one had labels and one was printed right on the envelope. I didn’t care! Not sure yet what we’ll be doing for ours, though…

I wish I, too, could be a true Southern lady, but my hand cramps up into a claw if I write a lot. Lamest excuse ever. Free downloaded font and my Kodak printer.

You’re a brave soul, Miss S! There was no way I was going to write all the addresses by hand–we went the super lazy way and did clear address labels (shh–don’t tell the etiquette Gods!).
