Miss Doe, Northern California Age and Occupation: 24, Real Estate Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Recycling Manager Engagement Date: December 25, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: Monte Verde Inn About Me: I’m a Rat Pack fan and a Christmas nut that loves to read, good wine, cheesy ’80s movies and ’90s sitcoms. My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. We are two old souls that are creating our long-awaited wedding with loads of tradition that blends our two styles into rustic elegance in the foothills of Northern California.

Frank Sinatra Meets Lynyrd Skynyrd

October 11th, 2011 @ 11:54 am by Miss Doe

Finding a DJ was something I wanted to do very early on in the planning process. It was among one of the most important vendors to me to book. They are basically responsible for keeping everything flowing smoothly, from ceremony to reception. I was preparing myself for the search to be difficult. You see, my taste in music is quite eclectic. My iPod is fairly interesting to browse through because the bulk of it is this:

Lots of Rat Pack music, old country and new country, ’90s boy bands, and the occasional show tune. Real good stuff. Now on the other hand, this is what Mr. Buck listens to:

Yup, that is pretty much it. He’s a simple kind of man. He doesn’t have an iPod, and the only time he listens to music is in the car. As you can probably imagine, our road trips are pretty interesting. One minute you are listening to “That’s Amore” and the next, “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Which means that we needed to find a DJ who would accommodate our vast taste in music. I have been to many weddings where the music is only one genre or on some occasions…highly inappropriate. At one wedding my brother and Mr. Buck put in a request for the DJ to play Lynyrd Skynyrd. He actually told them no. What a hater.

I mean, if I had it my way, I would have these guys DJ the wedding.

For some reason, though, I don’t think they will be available. When I began the search for a DJ, I went into it knowing that I was looking for that all-around DJ. You know the type—keeps the party moving, good personality, well spoken, and plays everything that we want. Including playing any requests from our guests. I came across Joe Kalamaras with SJ’s Disc Jockey by recommendation of both my makeup artist and my venue. From the reviews I found online, it seemed as though this guy was it. He also has his playlist on his website, so I was able to confirm that he does in fact play anything and everything. The rave reviews I found online proved to me that he was very experienced. To top it all off, he was affordable and within our price range.

We booked him soon after I met him, and I was able to check that to-do off the list! It feels great to know that we booked a DJ who I am confident will do a fantastic job at the wedding.

Were you picky like I was when choosing your DJ? Did you try and find a DJ who would be willing to play all types of different music?

Hi Miss Doe,

I also like a LOT of variety in my music. It’s important to me that the DJ incorporate a lot of genres of music but also keep the party groovin’. I want all of my guests to want to bust a move on the dancefloor so I need my DJ to play some songs for the older generations as well as the younger. I also want background music during dinner.

*The hunt begins.*

It’s totally ESSENTIAL that they play all types of music (except, for us, country — sorry!). I can’t believe that DJ wouldn’t play Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s such a staple! Luckily, one of my bridesmaids’ former coworkers/her husband’s current coworker moonlights as a DJ, did her wedding, she vouched for him, and our meeting with him confirmed our confidence. He gets it, and even though I said no Electric Slide… if somebody requests the Electric Slide, he’ll probably play the Electric Slide. We *do* want our guests to have fun, after all!

Sounds like a great find! Glad you were also able to book a great DJ for a great price! We were also pleasantly surprised by the price of the DJ we wanted - I think it has been the only thing so far that has actually come in under budget!
Sounds like you will have great music and tons of fun :)

My music tastes are fairly similar to yours and I was worried about finding an open minded DJ to just “go with it”. Luckily, we found our guy.

I have been wondering…are you a 50’s (Bogart crew) or 60’s (Sinatra/Martin, otherwise known as the clan) Rat Pack Fan?? I love em all!!

@Amber: Of course that was a Skynyrd pun! I could also say he’s a free bird or we call him the breeze :) Or if I wanted to get real mean…ooohhh that smell! ;) Haha just kidding.
@missRAV: LOVE Newsies! :)

Your DJ sounds awesome! I like that you got someone who will not only play good music, but keep the party moving with a great personality. We had one of Mr. P’s majorly talented friends make our wedding mix, and then my uncle MCed for us–it was perfect because he has a BIG personality!
