Miss Porcupine's Picture
Miss Porcupine, NYC/Lancaster, PA Age and Occupation: 26, Sales Coordinator/Publishing Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Assistant Manager/Sales Engagement Date: August 8, 2010 Wedding Date: March 2012 Venue: Riverdale Manor About Me: I'm a born and bred New Yorker with a love/hate relationship for the city I have always called home. Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. The future hubs and I met in college, settled in New York, and decided to go with a rustic/peacock infused wedding in Lancaster, PA, right near his hometown. Come the big day, we will be together 5 years, and we're looking forward to making it official!
About Miss Porcupine

I am going to interrupt this planning journey to take a stroll back in time (over a year ago, holy cow!) to tell you the story of how the Porcupines got engaged. I apparently blacked out for a moment when I was telling you about how we met and how Mr. Porcupine got the ring. I just stopped there, and went right into our planning journey, without even telling you the story of how the engagement went down.

Well, for starters, it was my 25th birthday (never saw that one coming). I always thought it would be a more low-key engagement. Wrong! My birthday fell on a Sunday and we had gone out the night before with our friends. Here’s an idea of how the night went.

Well, How the Heck Did He Pop the Question? : wedding lancaster proposal 41304 6 41304_6

So, yeahhhh, it was a bacon, egg, and cheese/pure grease down my gullet kind of morning.

Mr. Porcupine had let me know he had plans to take me out to a nice restaurant in the city on Sunday (my actual birthday). He wouldn’t tell me where it was though. Only that I should dress up. I had a dress and everything. AND pearls. I was feeling fancy.

I don’t remember what I did that day.

I think I sat around like a bum. Come mid-afternoon I begged Mr. Porcupine to drive to dinner because the restaurant was all the way uptown, and Sunday craptastic Subway service + feeling less then stellar = WAH. He was being a major freakazoid all day, but finally agreed. So, I took my sweet time getting ready. More lagging around. Iron a strand of hair. Put eye makeup on one eye. Lag. Put makeup on the next eye. Etc.

Mr. Porcupine was getting really freakin’ antsy at this point. I had one nagging thought of, “Is he going to propose on my birthday??” But, I honestly never thought he’d propose on a pre-existing holiday (like my birth). Finally, I finish lagging, Mr. Porcupine pulls out a large box from his closet and out the door we go.

We went downstairs, and BAM! A limo! I didn’t even get a picture of it because I was in mass confusion. A limo looked so silly on our little narrow block full of brownstones, across from a Laundromat. I was all, “Huh, WHAT is this doing here?” So, Mr. Porcupine explained that  it was for us, and I immediately felt like puking (in a good way). If he’s not proposing, I thought, he is mentally deranged for getting us a limo on my birthday!

Lo and behold, we got in the limo, and he didn’t even wait for the driver to put up the partition between the driver and us. He tossed the giant box at me and made me open the card. I read it, and it ended with, “this year for your birthday I have a very important question to ask…”

He popped out the ring box (sneaky giant box decoy) and just stared at me, ghost-faced. NO QUESTION! In typical Miss Porcupine fashion, I said, “YOU HAVE TO ASK THE QUESTION!” So, he did, and then continued to stare blankly, so I had to put the ring on my own finger. Only us!

At this point the limo pulled out, and I was so excited, and ready to call all my friends, when Mr. Porcupine informed me that everyone already knew! Everyone knew for quite some time. And those who didn’t know, he had told the night before while we were out for my birthday. He just cannot keep big news like that to himself. The only people who didn’t know? My parents and my sister! They were on vacation, and it took a half an hour to get ahold of them as they were lounging by the pool.

We drove around Manhattan for awhile and finally pull up to Park Avenue Summer, a really nice restaurant that changes its menu and name by the season. It was a really yummy meal and a beautiful restaurant. It was a great end to an exciting birthday.

Such a great story! You make me laugh and laugh. We were a bit reversed: Mr. Ladyfingers did ask the actual question, but I forgot to say yes. As if the mad scramble to get the ring on my finger, hugging, and crying wasn’t a tip off.

HA! My FI did not ask “the” question either. His questions was “Well, will you?” I also had to put the ring on myself…and open the ring box. He handed it to me wrapped up like a present…gotta love him.

@Mrs. Hyena: .@Mrs. Pony: Thanks ladies. I was very adament about hearing that quesion! haha
@moderndaisy: Such a nice place. I have to go back and try their other seasons!
@soyjoy222: Usually Mr. P is the dwaddler, so I was wondering why he was getting SO antsy.
@Miss Ladyfingers: Come to think of it, I don’t remember saying yes myself! lol
@anna4041: I think they get too flustered/excited in the moment to remember what to do.
@Miss Fox: Mr. P’s still trying to figure out a b-day present that can top it. Don’t think that will ever happen….

Such a cute story! And good job Mr. P on springing for a limo! Crappy Sunday subway service was the bane of my Manhattan existence. :)

My FI proposed in an unconventional type of way… you see, we play video games, and the first one we played after we got together was Halo (3) (a shooter game for those who don’t know). In the most recent version (and in many before) there’s a “Forge World” where you can make your own maps.
He apparently spent around 2-3 hours making a map. We were getting ready to play when he got on to download a map (At this time is when he set up his phone to videotape me)… We got the map loaded up and it ended up being a maze. Then, after I managed to find my way through it the question was in the air… and I had to ’snipe’ my answer with the sniper rifle he planted for me (of course that happened after the crying/hugging/mushy stuff/etc).
Turns out my parents and sister had known for about a week and my cousin knew for longer than that.

Sounds a little dorky, I know, but it suits us :)
As soon as I figure out how to upload pics into my reply I’ll post it.
