Jamaican Me Crazy: Crab Hunting

October 12th, 2011 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. High Wire

Missed the first post about our Jamaican honeymoon? Here you go: Jamaican Me Crazy: Experts at Lounging.

On our first night at the resort, I wound up going to bed early because I wasn’t feeling well. (Trying to stay hydrated by drinking a ton of supposedly “safe” resort water backfired on me.) Well, at about midnight, Mr. HW comes blazing into the room telling me that there are crabs everywhere and that I should come out and look at them.

I don’t know about you, but anything that can walk laterally, like spiders, crabs, or this horrible, horrible thing, is deemed 100% evil by me. It isn’t natural for you to walk sideways, I’m sorry.

And when I’m half asleep and someone comes running in saying these things are all over the place, I’m probably not going to be too happy with you. In my sleepy daze I remember I covered my hands over my head and asked Mr. HW to please please please stop talking about them.

As the week went on, my fear subsided, mostly because these poor little crabs are terrified of people. If they see you, they just run away. They are just out trying to get a midnight snack and don’t want to hurt anyone. And I have to admit, I found them so interesting!! So our nightly mission became attempting to photograph these little guys before they ran off into the shrubs. We managed to capture some good ones:

Yes, these are all cute and fun until you are sitting on the beach eating dinner in Mexico, and one literally walks across your feet like they are a toll bridge. I have never moved so fast in my life. ;)

Would it be horribly inappropriate to giggle about you getting “crabs” on your honeymoon? bahahaha sorry I couldn’t resist! They are kinda cute in a slightly terrifying way :)

Aww, I agree they are both cute and creepy! We actually have a hermit crab that we recently got because apparently I am really good at the fair game where you throw a ping pong ball into the fish bowls because I got it into the extra special purple bowl and won a hermit crab. But I definitely would not enjoy him as much if he was out of his aquarium and on the loose!

They are so fascinating! Whenever we are at our family’s beach house in the Carolina’s, we go sand crab hunting at night too! I just love to spy them doing their thang.
