Your Presence is Key

October 12th, 2011 @ 8:59 am by Miss Dalmatian

Vintage keys? Yes please!

A punny phrase? Yes please!

Unique and adorable save the dates that are definitely DIY-able? YES PLEASE!

I first came across the idea of using vintage keys for a save-the-date when I was reading Handmade Weddings. Then, as usual, I searched the internet to see similar projects. In general, they look a little something like this:

When I first saw this idea, I was completely smitten. I loved how the key brought in a little vintage flair and would serve as a sweet keepsake for our guests.

I immediately began contemplating what my shopping list would look like to create these (which was pretty easy since Handmade Weddings includes a list of supplies and instructions), and what kind of dent it would put in my budget.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that cool antique keys are relatively easy to obtain. There are lots available on eBay, you can find great deals on KennedyHardware.com, and even BHLDN has a gorgeous set of Proprietor’s Keys in their latest décor collection. Apparently there are a lot of crafters and collectors out there who find them as enchanting as I do!

Along with the keys I would need card stock, a hole-punch, ribbon, a ruler, a printer, and potentially a corner rounder depending on the look I was going for. Not too bad, especially since I already had the hole punch, ruler and printer.

Now, I admit, I was getting a little ahead of myself. My discovery of these save-the-dates came very early on in my wedding planning process (in fact, at that point I didn’t even know what date we were going to be asking our guests to save!). So, I tucked the idea away and looked forward to one day creating these delightful cards.

Did you come across any projects that stole your heart early on in your planning? Will you include any small keepsakes in your wedding save the dates or invitations?

vintage keys are my wedding theme too! I used a rubber stamp and embossed them on my wedding invitation envelope and i have glued them to my table numbers. I’m also planning on using them as little touches around my venue. Something so small can go a long way! Have fun!

Oh yes, I loved the handkerchief save the dates.

Along with the fact I loved the look - it also had some meaning. I give out handkerchiefs to all bridesmaids at any wedding I am in. It may seem silly but it is a little keepsake that usually gets overlooked and I once had tissue stuck to my face when I was a 20 yo bridesmaid on a hot August day. (oh the pictures Ah!)
The Hankies… my Fiance didn’t like them so much, or at least he didn’t feel his mother would appreciate it. See in her culture the American use of a Hankie is rude and disgusting. So my favorite idea that I had talked with my friends about and we had plotted and planned and giggled over was thrown out like a dirty kleenex :-(

We didn’t even plan on sending out STDs, but then I found some really cute magnet ones and was obsessed all of a sudden :) I ended up designing a similar one in Publisher, and my fiance’s uncle printed them for us for free (he works at a commercial printer)!

The key idea is really cute, and I had no clue that vintage keys were so easy to find. Imagine all the history they hold! My only question is: how will you mail them?
