About Miss Doe

Black vs Khaki

October 12th, 2011 @ 6:22 am by Miss Doe

As of two weeks ago, here was my thought on suits for the guys: eh, we will deal with it around two months before the wedding. Well that all changed when Mr. Buck was a groomsman in a wedding last week. While we were at the tux shop getting him fitted I was casually chatting with the lady working there. She mentioned to me that if we order the suits for our wedding by the end of this year, we will ensure this year’s prices and not have to pay when prices go up in January. Say what? That changed everything for me, plus, I am not one to shy away from planning ahead and booking early. Now all of a sudden I have to make a decision on what kind of suit the guys should wear. They have no interest in choosing; if I left it to them this is what they would all show up in:

Not going to happen. I have a super powerful title called Bride which means I am allowed to say no to these types of things. We did compromise though, and decided the guys can all wear camouflage socks.

Now, luckily for us, I have seen my fiance in various suits over the years so we kind of have an idea of what each one looks like on him. I now present to you, our 9th through 12th grade prom pictures. Awkward poses in all their glory.

At the wedding that he was recently in, all of the groomsmen wore khaki.

You see we have many options to choose from. Except white—that one is not in the running. We are very torn between black and khaki. The khaki would go well with the outdoor scenery at the wedding, especially since it will be spring. However the black is classic and timeless. How can I choose? I think he looks smashing in all of them. (Gag, I know.)

Will you help me out a little? What is your take on this black vs khaki dilemma? Did you also have a tough time deciding what the guys should wear?

I vote black for the simple reason of timeless, however no matter what you do for a wedding, parts will not be timeless— just look at weddings from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s. Whether it be hair, dress, shoes, etc something will go out of style. Go with your gut.

If the tone of your wedding is going to be formal, I’d definitely go with the black. If you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, I’d definitely say the khaki!

Which color looks better with your bridesmaids dresses?

Honestly both would be nice. Black is more timeless, but khaki seems to be rather popular these days. Personally, I love grey. Timeless like black, but not as stuffy.

I vote for the khaki/tan look…probably because I am doing that myself!! The guys will be in tan suits with a black button up underneath, no tie. I think it will look fabulous! Our wedding is outdoors; still formal but I like a more relaxed atmosphere. Both would look great though!

The khaki looks great. And, please tell me you are doing some type of photo montage/collage of you guys through the years… the prom photos are too cute!

I vote the khaki if you’re going for the more casual affair. Don’t do gray- its so overdone now.

No white? Darn. ;) I love the khaki or gray look for outdoor, kinda-less-casual-but-formal-enough-that-guests-shouldn’t-wear-jeans wedding. Our bridesmaids are all in short dresses, I’m not doing a veil… so khaki or gray seemed fine to me. Mr. Ladyfingers disagreed, and got black-with-pinstripes tuxes. Definitely timeless! Does Mr. Buck have an opinion either way?

I wish I could help … my fiance wants to wear shorts … I am not kidding, he said “you know I always like to look good, why can’t you trust me to decide what the guys wear?” … well now I feel bad trying to veto him because he played the trust card … but really? shorts?

But I am very excited to see what you decided!! And I LOVE the old school pictures!! (And I agree, what goes better with the bridesmaid dresses? It’s all about the dresses at weddings!)

Gray gray gray! It has the sophisticated look of black without being dated like khaki.

I really like him in the khaki picture! I think if your wedding is during the day, outdoors, or rustic its fine. Otherwise go black

I like both, but I think it really depends on how formal your wedding is. Black is definitely more night time formal, khaki is a bit more laid back/afternoon wedding.

Given that you guys are having an outdoor spring wedding I say, go for khaki! :)

I think it depends on the tone you’re trying to set for the wedding - I would say black for a bit more formal, but khaki if you want a more relaxed, laid back vibe. Love that you have so many pictures to look back on and get suit inspiration from!

Does he have an opinion? I was sold on khaki suits maybe even before I met my groom, but he really wanted to wear a tux and that was something I was willing to bend on. The groom doesn’t always get much of a say in this wedding stuff, but if he has an opinion on this, go with that!

I love that you posted all your prom photos of you two, that is just awesome. I’m partial to black…but I think khaki would look real good with camouflage socks :) Whatever you choose, Mr. Buck will look great!

I like the Khaki looks very nice. And, then if your Mom and future Mother in law want to wear black, they could ;)

Love the old prom photos, so cute! When I read your title I thought “no one looks good in khaki suits”, but I think Mr. Buck may have changed my mind, so I vote khaki :)

Our debate is uniforms versus suits. This debate has been tabled for now…

Such a tough decision! The consensus seems to be khaki to set the tone of a laid back affair and black for more formal. Garsh this is hard.
@Mrs. Pony: that’s sweet of you Pony :)
@Miss Porcupine: Of course!!! We have sooo many photos from when we were younger.
@Miss Ladyfingers: Haha, his dad actually did wear a white tux for his wedding. So it was an actual split second though…maaaaybe we will carry on the tradition? Then it was ruled out haha.
@MStivers: Whoa!!! Shorts, huh? That’s a new one! :)
@Mrs. Rock: Good try, Mrs. Rock…. ;)
