The Ghosts Of Wedding Cakes Past

October 12th, 2011 @ 12:42 pm by Mrs. Raccoon

Ever since I wrote my cupcake post, the ghosts of wedding cakes past have haunted me.

I’m just not sure I can skip such a traditional element.

It’s not that I’m concerned about cupcakes dating our wedding. We’re getting married when and where we are, and I wouldn’t change that for anything. Even if I have to dress up in the most ridiculous snow suit the makers of winter apparel can dream up and hook the cats up to a sled, I’ll be there. Right now, I just promise to really think about and explore all of our options.

If you’re offering cupcakes at your wedding, will you miss the traditional element of having a larger cake? What will you cut when it comes to your cake cutting?

I wasn’t doing cake and had the same feeling… will I miss it/what will we cut? I thought I wouldn’t care but then as it got closer, I decided just to order a simple white buttercream 9 inch cake. It’ll look pretty with our cake topper and we can cut it and eat and take photos and I think I’ll be happier than if we had done away with it.

I’m struggling with this same question!!!! We want cupcakes and cookies… I’m considering just cutting a cupcake in half to be silly, but I don’t know!

We worked with our bakery and found out we would actually be able to afford a little of both within our budget. We are getting cupcakes for all our guests and we got a small 3 tier cake for us to cut and well… for people to eat if they want more cake I suppose haha.

you can have a small cake or a really large cupcake to cut. but tastewise, and fun wise, cucpakes are so much better than a slice of cake. go for it!!!

We’re doing cupcakes for both financial and practical reasons, and we also decided to go with a small cake for the top tier of our cupcake tower so that we have something to cut. I’m personally really excited about the cupcakes, but we will still have a simple 6 inch cake to cut. Now to figure out what to put on it (we don’t have a topper yet)!

Well, if you don’t want to miss out, you could get a little bitty wedding cake for you to cut, and just the two of you can eat it :)

Not regretting our decision, doubt we will after the wedding. We ordered a 6″ presentation cake for us to do our topper-and-cake-cutting-and-cakefacesmashing with.

I think getting a small cake to cut is a great idea! Not to make things harder for you (and I totally realize that not everyone would feel this way) but I would feel like I was missing out without a cake. Don’t get me wrong - I love cupcakes, but I just love wedding cakes so much and wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity!

I really don’t think you can go wrong either way - as long as there is something sweet to eat I think everyone (including you) will be happy!

I have to say, the tiered cake is iconic. Photos of cutting into it…swoon… And I personally don’t love handling cupcake wrappers and getting sticky frosting on my hands to lick off or wipe on a cloth napkin that will be in your lap?

Cupcakes and tiered stands are adorable but I loved seeing my big wedding cake when I entered the room.

What about doing a larger cake like a 10” round or something to cut for the two of you and then accompanying that with the cupcakes? It seems to be the best of both worlds and then you might not feel like you’re missing out so much on the “traditional” wedding cake?

Our baker is providing us with a small cake to go at the top of the cupcake pyramid so we have something to cut!

I enjoyed the cats pulling a sled. You can always do a small cake for y’all to cut and cupcakes for everyone else. That’s what we’re doing.

Ohhh… ohhhh the cakes are so pretty. I wants them. That’s why we can’t have cuppies.

BUT some people I know have a small cake to cut into and then have cupcakes for everyone else. Would that work for you?

Maybe you can have your cake and eat it, too! Get the cupcakes and a little cake for you and Mr. R to cut for each other!

My Fiance isnt a big fan of cake, so we’ve been discussing other options - particularly cheese cake….I just don’t know how we’ll make it look pretty….which we can still cut, but I love cake so I will probably miss it :(
