Mrs. Parasol's Picture
Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.
About Mrs. Parasol

Now that I’m on the other side of wedding planning, there are so many things I want to tell brides-to-be. But instead of bombarding you all with my old-married-lady wisdom, I’m going to give you my #1 piece of wedding-day advice:

Get yourself a waterboy (or girl).

#1 Piece of Wedding-Day Advice: Get Thee a Waterboy! : wedding family san ramon 512dc44 512DC44

For real. So many people try to come up with meaningful ways to incorporate family and friends into their wedding day. It may seem silly but, honestly, a loved one serving as your own personal waterboy on your wedding day is one of the most meaningful things that they could do for you.

Between slipping into my wedding dress around 2:45 PM and leaving our reception at 11:00 PM, I had exactly two glasses of water and maybe half a glass of champagne. Yes, that’s 2.5 eight-ounce glasses of liquid consumed over an eight-plus-hour period.

And the only reason I drank even that is because I was finally able to grab one of our guests and beg her to get me a glass of something. As the bride, it was ridiculously difficult to do something as small as getting myself a glass of water because I was constantly entertaining and spending time with our guests. Of course, this particular guest was more than happy to oblige me with a glass of water, which made me realize: I should have asked someone to be my waterboy!

I know I must sound a little ridiculous, but if bridesmaids can be expected to help a bride go to the bathroom, then it’s more than reasonable to task someone with keeping you hydrated on your wedding day. Especially if you plan on doing a lot of this at your wedding:

Needless to say, I was completely and utterly parched by the time we left our reception, and the first thing I did when Mr. Parasol and I got to our hotel was guzzle down the five-dollar bottle of water.

So hive, don’t be like me. Stay hydrated on your wedding day. You’ll be able to enjoy everything so much more if you’re not jonesing for a drink. Get yourself a waterboy, someone who will make sure that you always have a drink in your hand. Seriously.

And some of you may be wondering about this (I know I would be!) and, yes, not drinking meant that I never once had to go to the bathroom in my wedding dress. Which was an added perk, because I wore Spanx on my wedding day and probably would have had to take everything off to successfully use the restroom.

Were any of you smart enough to find a waterboy for your wedding? Any other married ladies with odd advice for brides-to-be?

Great advice! Luckily, someone on the catering staff attended closely to all my drink/food needs. He was fetching me drinks all night!

LOL, great advice! One of my bridesmaids was my waterboy, though I didn’t intentionally task anyone with it!

This is great! I did manage to eat and drink a little but I was still sooo thirsty at the end! Dancing, talking all night, it’s important to drink! I even have a picture of me at our “after-party” in our suite in my wedding dress, drinking Coke straight out of a 2-liter bottle. Reckless, but felt awesome!

Haha, I definitely plan on lots of dancing so I will have to be sure have a waterboy/girl! Although that will mean I will be needing more help peeing…

It is far to easy to go without water on the wedding day. It is always the simple things that slip through the cracks and this is a big one. A waterboy is a great solution, and it gives a family member or friend an excuse to get to spend more time with you on your big day! Great advice as always Mrs. P.

Lol this is hilarious! Such good advice, because really who would think of this unless they lived it? Also, I can not believe you went that many hours without peeing! Impressive. haha.

Great advice! I always consider it my job as a bridesmaid to make sure the bride always has a drink of her choice in her hand throughout the day, in addition to any bathroom help :)

This post cracked me up! I never would have thought of this, but now that you mention it, it seems so important to make sure I put someone in charge of keeping me hydrated!

when my sister got married a few years back my dad put me in charge of making sure she has plenty of water to drink through out the day… while growing up my sis had a tendency of fainting… so I was the water girl at her wedding, hope she’ll return the favor…

Such good advice and I never would have thought of it…plus hydrating helps with any next-day hangover.

I must have some awesome friends b/c people bent over backwards asking if they could get me drinks. I always try to ask brides if I can get them food or a beverage - because it is hard to remember to get it or ask for it yourself.

Another word of advice - get the Spanx with the pee-hole! I was able to go the bathroom all by myself (walking straight in and sitting down, a la Mrs. Cola ) :)

Glad to hear there are so many brides to find creative ways to stay hydrated! And there are some great BMs out there! :)
@Mrs. Waffle: That guy sounds like he’s worth his weight in gold! The one time I was able to get myself some champagne, the lady who was serving immediately helped me and filled my glass to the brim. :)
@Mrs. Hyena: She sounds like an awesome BM! She just knew she had to take care of you. What a friend!
@futureMFG: Of course! I obviously didn’t think of it, so I thought I’d pass the advice on.
@Miss Seal: Thanks, lady! Definitely keep hydrated so you can keep par-taying!
@KLJ: So true! It’s often those simple things that don’t get done, but just giving someone the task makes sure that it will.

@Miss Porcupine: I know! I had friends who were on tasked with making sure I got food (but really, I was so hungry by the reception, there was no way I was not going to get food!), but I totally forgot about the water! And the whole not peeing thing isn’t all that impressive–my bladder is kind of scary large and just knows how to not go when I’m preoccupied with more important things. Like I’m that girl who can spend 12+ hours at an amusement park and only go once. If holding it were an Olympic sport, I’d have a gold medal. :)
@Mrs. Pony: Wow, Pony! It sounds like I needed you by my side all night! What a great Bridesmaid you are!
@Allie: Thanks! It’s something I never thought of either!
@AshleyB: Oh wow, it sounds like your sister really needed to stay hydrated! I hope she didn’t have any fainting spells! And I’m sure she’ll be a great sister and return the favor for you! She probably knows how important having a watergirl is!

@kate02121: Haha, so true! Obviously that wasn’t a problem for me, but I imagine other brides and grooms and happy to avoid a post-wedding day hangover!
@julis120: Thank you! :)
@eeper: Wedding guests are pretty awesome! They really do their best to make sure you’re having a great time and have enough food, drinks, etc. And great advice about the Spanx–I didn’t even know they made them like that!

This is great advice, Parasol. I would be eager to see another post of the other things (in hindsight) you’d wished you had done, had or made, and another of what you really didn’t need or use and those things you felt you wasted time and money on.

I think the wisdom of already-marrieds will be a huge help to those of us who are planning to come up the aisle behind you.

Definitely great advice. I weighed 3 pounds less the day after my wedding than I did on the day before, pretty sure that was due to utter dehydration. (Am I completely obsessive about weighing myself every day? Possibly…)

I love getting advice from brides on the other side of the wedding planning process! Having a guest bring me water is something I never would have thought of, so thanks for the tip!
