Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

I had so much fun putting together the playlists for our wedding. It meant that we got to listen to a lot of really meaningful songs that we really love throughout our cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing. Here’s a few examples.

“Little Jeannie” by Elton John:

“Little Jeannie” is my little sister’s “song,” so it was important to me to include it.

Must Be Santa by Raffi:

I’ve written about my love of Raffi before, and yes this song definitely made a welcome appearance during dinner! Some of us definitely sang along. Other guests probably thought we were really weird!

“In the Mood” by Glenn Miller:

This was one of my paternal grandfather’s favourite songs. Since he passed away a few years ago, I thought this would be a great nod to him.

I particularly loved putting together the playlist for the dancing since it meant that there were almost no songs that I didn’t love to dance to on the list (except for some of Mr. Knitting’s choices that I couldn’t veto out of fairness!).

“I Love the Nightlife” by Alicia Bridges:

This wouldn’t actually make the cut as one of my favourite dancing songs, except that this song is my mom’s favourite. She’s a bit of a character (this is a pretty good example if you need a reminder!) and actually runs around the house singing this sometimes. She’s also a great person to have at a wedding because she loves dancing. It was a no-brainer to me that this song needed to be on the playlist.

However, there was definitely one song that I can list as my absolute favourite for dancing.

“Home for a Rest” by Spirit of the West:

I’m not sure if this is just a Canadian thing or not, but this is the best song ever for dancing. I’ve never met anyone who can resist this song and I’m actually always really sad if this isn’t played at a wedding. It’s a song that works best later in the night after everyone has had few, and it always gets everyone on the dance floor. Seriously, it’s the best.

What’s your all-time favourite song to dance to at a wedding? Is anyone else a “Home for a Rest” fan?

ah! I have had FOUR conversations this week about how Home for a Rest is THE best wedding dancing song. Ever. It never fails to get everyone on the dance floor, and everyone dances as hard as they can! But also… I’m Canadian haha. I’m going to my good friends’ wedding this Saturday and they said it’s on their must play list :D

I’m also on a trivia team, and the bar it’s in is called the Brass Taps from lyrics in the song, and there was a trivia question about the song this week! Seriously best ever!

You HAVE to have Spirit of the West at every Canadian wedding!
Our DJ played it at ours, and I was in the middle of a conversation with someone when I heard it start, so I just said ‘Um, excuse me, I have to go dance now’ and ran off to join my giant circle of friends.

There’s a couple photos of me on the dance floor with my mouth wide open, and I’m pretty sure it was this song. Or Don’t Stop Believing.

The DJ also played The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, which made me very happy. :)

The best must-have wedding song in my opinion is Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”. I personally love it because it was sort of the White Sox theme song when they won the World Series in ‘05, but I think everyone else loves it too and it definitely gets people singing!

Oh yes!! Every wedding (especially a Canadian one) must play some Great Big Sea! And at least a bit of Tragically Hip must be played (or alot of The Hip preferably)!

Don’t Stop Believing might be the American equivalent of Home For A Rest. My friends notice when that song’s not invited to a wedding.

My dancing skills are limited but I’ll bust a waddle for Paul McCartney’s song My Love any day!

@Miss Raccoon:

Naw, Don’t Stop Believin is also a must have at every Canadian wedding. It gets people out there for sure, but nothing like Home For a Rest :P Don’t Stop gets the number two spot

@Cinnamon Bun We love that song! “Don’t stop believing” has been banned from some of Weddings we’ve performed however! Including one that we have on Saturday :(
