Hand Me a Kerchief

October 13th, 2011 @ 1:54 pm by Miss Dalmatian

So, the hive has been abuzz about the idea of vintage handkerchiefs as a medium for totally stunning and totally unique save-the-dates and invitations. Miss Cheetah mentioned them here, Miss Biscuit mentioned them here, Miss Petit Four mentioned them here, and talk of this idea has been all over the boards!

My own obsession began when I came across these:

Can you say SWOON?!

Now, I know what some of you are thinking—didn’t you say you were going to use vintage keys for your save-the-dates? Yes, that was the plan. The plan, however, was immediately changed when these beauties came into my field of vision. Not to fret—the vintage keys found a special place of their own!

I began vigorously scouring the web in search of anything and everything I could find related to handkerchief save-the-dates. Yes, I was frantic. Yes, I realize that webpages and inspirational pictures do not disappear if I do not immediately find them. No, this did not slow me down. To my delight, my search was quite fruitful!

I found a few websites, such as www.lucky-luxe.com, that offer beautiful options for ordering customized handkerchief save-the-dates that they print for you. I decided against this for a couple of reasons: 1) the pricing charts made my stomach turn and 2) I wanted projects! I was craving DIY ideas and these were just screaming to be my next craft project.

The more I thought about it, the more it made sense that I was so strongly drawn to using handkerchiefs. After all, I love fabric. You see, I love to quilt and sew AND I love clothes. Now if those aren’t good enough reasons to have our save-the-dates be printed on fabric, I don’t know what is!

Did you come across any striking new ideas that led you to change your plans? Have you ever printed on fabric?

You may well already be done with them, but I found this tutorial for stamping them. Or is your plan to embroider?

Handkerchiefs are amazing! If I had had more time, I definitely would have found a way to incorporate these beauties. :)

@curlychemist: Thanks! We are actually going to use iron-on sheets (more on that to come), but the stamp is a really good idea!

I stamped my own and used them to ask my girls to be bridesmaids. I posted about it here:

I had a custom rubber stamp made for $20 and stamped them on vintage hankies my mom had collected.

@SoontobeBride: @SoontobeBride:

I did the trial run with a stamp. It was pretty easy. I was going to put a card with website info in the middle to hold its shape in the mail
