The Love Tank

October 14th, 2011 @ 3:58 pm by Miss Petit Four

My friend and I were talking the other day about a book she has been reading about relationships called The 5 Love Languages. In the book, the concept of a “love tank” is brought up and how to keep that tank full.

Quality time is hard when you both work full-time jobs. To top it off, Mr. PF coaches football and is gone a lot. The only time we really get to see each other is in the mornings, and I’ll be honest, I’m not the most exciting person at 6:00 AM. So, I have been looking for ways to keep our love tank full when I feel like it’s starting to get low.

We have been trying to implement date nights on Sundays (his only day off), but a lot of times we are both so tired from the week that we end up not going. Also, Mr. PF likes to watch football on Sundays, and planning a date around that can get tricky as well.

I have also tried leaving little love notes around the house for him to discover at random times, but I guess my hiding spots were too good cause he hasn’t found any yet.

How do you keep your love tank full on a busy schedule? Have you ever read The 5 Love Languages?

My FI and I recently read it and it helped us know what things keep us feeling loved more…the key is remembering to ask “what can I do today/this week?” and practicing using their love language and not your own

my fiance and i are reading it too. we love it and find that some of the situations in the book are familiar, and it is defiantly hard to find time to keep it full but how we do it is read the book together or just sit and talk together without the television :)

we like to surprise each other and our date nights are usually on the whim (mr o and I also watch football on sundays). and sitting down and cuddling on the couch, even for an hour, with the phones and computers off, can fill our love tank right back up. :)

Our date nights tend to be spur of the moment. I’ve been thinking about reading this book to better understand his love language. Spending time in the evening watching TV helps us to stay connected even if we aren’t talking too much. Also, we like to lie in bed a little bit before sleep and snuggle and chat about our day. That’s one of our favorite times of the day.

I saw an idea on Pinterest (addiction) for planning a date each month. You put the idea, money, and other info in a manila envelope labeled with each month. You could always plan around his schedule, so y’all have something to look forward to.

I haven’t read the book yet but I’m very intrigued by it. Foxy and I have such differing schedules that it’s hard for us to have date nights, per say - every so often we are able to make dinner together and eat sans TV (that’s a huuuge deal for us, hah!) and it’s kind of awesome :)

FI and I read it about six months before he proposed to me. He actually read it a few years before he met me, and read through it again when I picked it up. OH. MAN. It is so worth it.
But for us, we both work at the same place, and even though I don’t spend any time with him at work or on lunch breaks, it’s nice to peek my head into his office every now and again and make faces. Just whenever you can. And try to remember that hobbies are far less important than people. That’s a huge lesson we both have learned.

My work schedule is crazy too, but we always make sure we eat at least one meal at the table together every day and have snuggle time every night. These have been good times to be without tech and TV and focus on each other.

I’m almost finished with the book & want to make my fiancé read it. We have opposite work schedules & seldomly have a day off together. I’m hoping it will give us some ideas to make the most of the time we do have off together.

We keep a date night every Friday night and even if it’s only us on the couch catching up on our DVRed shows from the week it’s still a time that we’re not on our laptops or working on anything else–just being together is enough.

And I love the concepts of love languages. I read the book ages ago (during my first marriage–it only works if both people are into it, btw) but it’s given me insight into all sorts of things, not just romantic relationships since then.

Even as a student, my SO and I have a hard time finding time to have quality love time (or just seeing each other) that isn’t at a meal or sleeping. We take every chance we can to spend time together otherwise, but it’s hard. Hopefully things will sort themselves out though!

Great post! Lately I haven’t really been the model of keeping a love tank full. We have a date night, but lately Saturday nights together have been hard to come by. We have lots of outings stockpiled for after the wedding, though!
