About Miss Dalmatian

…real flowers are awesome, and clay flowers are too!

I know some other bloggers have shared the wonder that is clay flowers, but in case you’ve missed it, here’s a quick video that will surely take your breath away!

When I saw the artistry that went into this project, I was both incredibly impressed and incredibly intrigued. I saw this video before I was engaged but the clay flowers did immediately earn a spot in my already established wedding inspiration folder.

My frugal side could not overpower my fascination, so I hopped on to the Deco Clay online shop and made a spur-of-the-moment purchase of the Clay Art for Special Occasions book and a few different colors of the clay. I eagerly awaited the arrival of my items, and immediately ripped into the package when it landed on my doorstep.

As I flipped through the pages, I was mesmerized (and slightly intimidated) by the unbelievable level of detail that went into shaping each bloom. I decided I better get started on my first attempt before I psyched myself out completely, so I opened the book to the rose tutorial and off I went.

My first complete flower!

Now, at the time I did not anticipate blogging about my clay flower endeavors, so I only snapped photos of the finished products. On top of this, I only snapped photos of the finished products that ended up as decent looking flowers and not as squished piles of clay. The point being, working with clay (especially if you are a newbie like me) requires a lot of patience and an occasional frustrated scream!

If had not been so enchanted by the potential outcome I may have abandoned ship early on, but looking back I am so glad I stuck with it. After a bit of practice, I was able to create flowers that I was actually proud of, and that made the whole process worth while.

My biggest success so far - a clay flower basket!

When it did come time to start wedding planning, I immediately thought of clay flowers. Since it took me so long to make them (after an evening of crafting I would only end up with a handful of flowers), I was hesitant to take on the challenge of crafting all of our centerpieces or bouquets. I also didn’t want to get too carried away—as much as I loved clay art, I wasn’t ready to forgo live blooms altogether! So, I was a little relieved when we booked a venue that included flowers. Now I just have to decide how to incorporate my clay beauties into the wedding. I’ve come up with a few possibilities so far.

What do you all think is best?

What about using the single flower as the favor? They’re beautiful!

Hmm, that’s tough. I have never seen these! They are sooo pretty. And wow, go you for getting the book and learning how to do it yourself! The girl in the video had suuuch a pretty bouquet, I think it would make a nice keepsake too. So I voted for a bouquet on the guest table. Buuut if you could do enough to cover all the flowers for centrepieces or something that would be really cool!! You have a few months still. ;)

I guess I’m selfish - I’d say make a bouquet or wreath because it’ll be a keepsake you can take home, whereas as lovely as these are, there might be some guests who don’t know what to do with a clay bloom favor, you know?

Thanks everyone! What would you think about making a basket like the one pictured above but bigger? That one was only maybe a 4 inch square, but I could make one more like a 7-8 inch square and put it on one of the decor tables (guest book, water table, etc.). I am leaning towards this because I think I like the look of them clustered together better than just one flower by itself…

Thank you so much for the input!

These are amazing! I think you should definitely incorporate them somehow–you need to show off these skills!

Kudos, you crafty lady! I agree with miss.qwerty because I’d want a keepsake after all of that effort. They will be great no matter how you use them though!

I think some sort of favor might be cute. Clay flowers with ribbon tying the napkins? Each guest can keep it and use as tree ornament? Maybe put your wedding date on back? Or the wreath so you can keep it. :) You could also do bouquet charms for the bridesmaids and the moms!

I’m super impressed.. yours look great, seriously!! I’m with H - have you thought about making one for each person as the favor? You can add a little name tag to them.. they could even be the table cards? Now I’m getting carried away, lol!

Seems similar to making gumpaste flowers, hopefully not quite as time consuming :o *curses my 5 hour peony*

what about using them as either escort card (holders) or place cards? (one for each person)

Wow! Beautiful!

I’m with Miss Fox - can you use them as the favor? Add a little tag to each one and use as a place card? It would definitely be unique!

Personally, if I were a guest I would love a handmade flower as a favor to take home! Knowing that a lot of personal time and effort went into it makes it really special. :) I love all of Miss Fox’s ideas!
