My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. We are two old souls that are creating our long-awaited wedding with loads of tradition that blends our two styles into rustic elegance in the foothills of Northern California.

Touchdown! Scored An Officiant!

October 14th, 2011 @ 5:48 am by Miss Doe

For some reason I put off the search for an officiant for quite a long time, until it hit me that I was missing one of the most important vendors—the one involved in the reason that the entire wedding is taking place. We needed someone to marry us—but not just anyone.

Mr. Buck and I are both Christians, so it is very important to both of us to have a religious ceremony focused on our beliefs. Unfortunately, where we are getting married there were not many options. Our venue mainly had recommendations for judges, but we were looking for someone of faith to marry us. There are various pastors within the area, but I wanted something more than that. I was looking for someone that we could easily connect to.

In came the football coach.

I come from a town where high school football is huge. Think Kenny Chesney’s song, Boys of Fall.

A few years back we had an awesome football coach for one of our high schools. Every kid loved him, and he whipped that team into shape. On top of that, he was very involved with a group called Young Life. It is a Christian ministry that gets teenagers involved in faith based activities. My sister was a volunteer for Young Life, which is where she met the football coach. She knew he was ordained because he had officiated a few weddings of people that she knows. Unfortunately, he left to coach at a high school up near the foothills. It was great for them because he is highly respected, but sad for our small little town.

When we were on the search for the perfect officiant for the wedding, my sister brought up the football coach. He just so happens to live near the vicinity of our venue. I called him up to see if he would be interested in officiating our wedding. He was incredibly gracious and told us he would be honored to do so. He is not technically a pastor, but that is fine by us. I am well aware of the incredible work he has done to help others in their faith. That is all we needed: someone with whom we had a connection and would officiate a Christian wedding.

We will be meeting with him and his lovely wife in December to go over details of the wedding. We would love to do it now, but it is football season and from what I have heard…he eats, breathes and sleeps football. And I know better than to come between a man and his football.

If you’re a person of faith but aren’t getting married in a place of worship, how are you going about finding an officiant? Has the search been difficult? Any tips for others in the same boat?

I definitely identify with this, especially the last minute search part. Our problem is that we don’t go to church but we are Christian and our parents definitely want a Christian influence on the wedding. We are also getting married far from our home town. Because of all of this, I have been putting it off. We have so many things planned but no one to marry us.

My sweetie and I found a venue that was just perfect for us in Central Jersey but it’s not a house of worship. We attened a larger church and the schedule for weddings is usually booked far in advance (no availability on our date) and like you we didn’t want just anybody to do it. I called the pastor at the church I used to attend in North Jersey. I’ve known him and his wife since I was 14 yrs old and I thrilled to say he is going to perform the ceremony.

Ms Doe, I am so happy you posted this today. I too am in the same situation. I am curious to hear what the Hive has to say.

How fun a coach is your officiant! On a side note, I loved YL in high school…I even attended multiple camps, it was so fun!

We waited a while to start the officiant thing (post coming soon!), and because of it we couldn’t have our first choice. Our situation is a bit different though, since I am religious and Foxy isn’t - we wanted to get a Lutheran pastor who would be ok doing a secular ceremony. Fortunately, both of my parents are pastors themselves and know a whoooole lotta other pastors. It definitely helped the search!

I can relate in so many ways, Miss D! As Christians, choosing our officiant was a really important decision. We had an amazing pastor in NYC who we did our marriage counseling with, but unfortunately (or really fortunately!), he and his wife were expecting their second baby about a month after our wedding. There was no way she could come out with him, and as a good husband, there was no way he was going to leave his very-pregnant wife to perform a wedding across the country! We went back and forth for a while and ultimately came to the best decision for us: my dad was our officiant! He’s a pastor and is excellent at marrying people! He did a great job, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. It was perfect for us. :)
