Miss Fox's Picture
Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!
About Miss Fox

But… But… the Buttons!

October 15th, 2011 @ 9:20 am by Miss Fox

I will tell you this about my dress: it’s relatively simple. It has just a bit of bling, but the cut and fabric make up for the lack of “stuff” going on. That being said, one of it’s selling points to me was the fact that it had buttons. Buttons that went from top of the back of the dress alllll the way down to the end of the train. Simply gorgeous, and as I said, pretty much the deciding factor in declaring this dress the one.

So.

I went into my initial try-on at RK Bridal incredibly excited.. I mean, who wouldn’t be?! There it was, hanging in the dressing room, my beauty in all its glory. I slipped that baby on (and actually remembered to bring a strapless bra this time, woo hoo!) and was thrilled that the top and bodice fit me to a T. Porkfect. I could tell that even with the one pair of 4″ heels I’d be wearing during the wedding that I would still need to get the dress hemmed a bit—no biggie. I also need to get cups or something sewn into the top, but I already figured that would be the case regardless of the dress I bought.

Foxy Mama and I taking pictures of each other taking pictures of my dress ;)

So far, so good.

While I was admiring myself from the front, side, and back (narcissistic much?).. I noticed that those buttons I mentioned? Stopped midway down my butt, where the zipper stopped (yes they are faux-buttons, whatevs). Um…where were my buttons???

I looked at my mom and mentioned it, and said that there were definitely buttons all the way down, to which we both agreed. Just to be sure, she had our assistant, let’s call her Lisa, pull the sample—sure enough, it had buttons all the way down. I was getting every so slightly antsy (but totally kept the bridezilla at bay, I promise!) until Lisa told us not to worry; they would either get a new dress with the buttons all the way down, or would order the buttons and sew them on for me. The plan was to have my mom go back in the store when it’s corrected to do a once-over of the dress and make sure everything is kosher before having it shipped to Maryland (cost of shipping < NY taxes).

And THEN.

We go up to the front to possibly buy and take home my hairpiece (which we didn’t because of the silly NY taxes, again), and the sales associate behind the counter, Mariah, was on the phone with Allure asking about the rogue buttons. From what my mom and I could gather, the person she was talking to at Allure was a big ol’ bitch and not being very helpful. She didn’t know if the dress should have buttons all the way down, kept putting Mariah on hold, insisted RK had the wrong sample or that they sewed the buttons on themselves.. who the heck knows. All I knew was that I tried on a dress with buttons, and I wanted my buttons. All my mom knew was that she would NOT pay extra for something that is supposed to come on my dress already. We weren’t being bitchy—RK was totally on our side and trying the best they could to figure out the best way to get me those damn buttons.

Eventually, Mariah handed the phone over to Candy, the store manager. While I believe she was still on the phone with Allure when we left the store, she assured my mom and I that regardless of how it happens, I will get my buttons. When the dress finally reflects the sample I tried on, she will call my mom and have her come in to pay and do a once-over before shipping it and the hairpiece to me.

I know this is not the end of the world. I know it can be fixed. I know that I have more than enough time to get the buttons sewn on/order a new dress, have it shipped, and have it be altered. But it’s just annoying, you know? Le sigh.

Anyone else have any trials and/or tribulations in regards to your wedding dress?

Oh you must have the buttons! They make the back of a dress so lovely! And thank goodness they are faux! Funny story - my best friend’s dress had 100 REAL buttons (give or take) down the back of her dress - beautiful! BUT, she ended up falling asleep (or passing out, technicalities…) Before her now husband could get them all undone! Faux may save your wedding night!

Wow, that is annoying but at least the bridal store is handling it for you instead of you trying to fight for the buttons! I’m sure they’ll get everything sorted out in no time :)

I think everyone must go through some sort of wedding dress mess ups…maybe its like a bride’s right of passage kind of thing? My issue was from the tailor. I bought a sample size that was just a bit small (we could zip it up and everything but it was super tight), and I’d intended to just lose a little weight. When it came time to have it tailored, however, despite dieting and exercising ridiculous amounts I hadn’t lost any size through my chest and the dress needed to be let out like 1/2″. I left feeling confident that it would be perfect the next time I came to try it on. However, when I returned the next week the tailor had, for some reason, decided to let the dress bodice out about 4″ and what would have previously been fine but just a little uncomfortable was now falling off of me and gapping in the front, and on top of that one of the pleats that ran horizontally in the back was very noticeably sticking straight out about an inch. When the tailor asked my opinion about the dress I complimented all the other work she’d done (hemming, bustle, fixed a button, added a pocket for my insulin pump, etc) and then calmly explained my concerns. She proceeded to snap at me, tell me that it was my fault and that I must’ve lost a ton of weight and that the dress had the issue with the back when I brought it in (it didn’t).

In the end everything worked out fine, she fixed the size issue and (mostly) tucked the pleat back in and I just had to come for one extra visit, but at the time I felt like crying - you think you know exactly what you should be expecting and when there’s a kink in the plan it can really shake you, especially with something like your dress for your big day.

I’m sure that the buttons will look beautiful when they get them added on I’m and sorry that the design shop was such a pain.

I got my dress from RK too! haha. Small world. Very annoying button situation, but I’m sure it will look great in the end. RK did the alterations for my friend’s wedding dress as well, and her dress looked wonderful. I’m sure you will never know the difference once they add those buttons.

Eeek! Yeah… this totally happens sometimes I guess. I had a friend get a dress with tulle and when the new dress was ordered in… the tulle laid compleeetely different than the sample. Like it didn’t even look like the same dress. She begged them to just let her trade and have the sample because she was totally not digging the brand new dress at all.

Why can’t there be some consistency??

Well of course the second you mentioned having buttons go all the way down to the end of the train I immediately thought “it’s an Allure” because that’s their trademark! So it’s totally ludicrous that Allure is accusing RK of sewing them on the sample themselves. How annoying. I’m sure it will be perfect when your Mom picks it up.

So sorry you had to deal with that, but I’m glad the store handled it well and that there is time to get it all sorted out!

By the way, I LOVE buttons! My dress did not end up having them, but I think they are stunning - can’t wait to see them on you!

Ugh how frustrating! I’m glad the salon is handling well and will work to make it happen. And I’m jealous of your buttons! I love that look as well but my dress already has so much going on!

Props to the salon for having your back, or your back’s buttons. I hope they come through for you!
My dress hasn’t come in yet but it’s stories like this that make me nervous…

Being that my dress is Allure, that really annoys me! What poor business management on their part…and thank goodness for a good bridal salon :)

Wow, I hope everything turns out ok!

Hopefully my wedding dress troubles are over, but, less than a month after I put down my deposit, the store burned down. Then, I found out that my deposit wasn’t complete because extra-length, that I didn’t need, had been added on.

We finally completed the deposit in April. In June, I found out I was pregnant. I already ordered the dress two sizes too small. The dress was due in in October, I’ve already picked it up. But had to push the wedding back from March to July, because I’m due in February.

If I don’t fit into that dress by July…I’ll just leave that blank for emphasis.
