About Mrs. Raccoon

Oh Happy Day!

October 19th, 2011 @ 2:39 pm by Mrs. Raccoon

Just when we were feeling a little down in the dumps about music and had started surveying our friends for who would be good manning an iPod, our luck changed.

Oh Happy Day! : wedding indianapolis music 1019

Don’t get me wrong—I had warmed up to the iPod idea. Our friends that will be there who are interested in dancing boogie down to an iPod every weekend. On top of that, I kind of liked the idea that I could pick every song. It was the lady from our reception venue that said the iPod weddings there before didn’t work out well. The sound was off and not loud enough. Also, your playlist is your playlist, and it can’t be adjusted easily to play more of what the dancing people want to hear. There are a lot of pros and cons out there.

DJ or no DJ, we don’t expect the dance floor to be packed like sardines. We just want it to be a good time for the group that is out there.

Here are some things we had in our head while searching:

  • How long will they be playing music? (A typical reception is about four hours.)
  • Is setup and tear-down included or extra?
  • How long have they been a DJ?
  • What is their cost?
  • What is the retainer fee and then when is the rest of the payment due?
  • What are their reviews and what does a good ol’ Google search return?
  • Are they good about responding in a timely manner?
  • Will they be displaying a lot of advertisement for themselves?
  • What will they be wearing that night?
  • Do you like their style of announcing things?
  • Will you need to pay for their travel?
  • Can you meet face to face before the wedding?

How we decided between our final two:

Disc Jockey A is just getting started and it’s more of a hobby, while Disc Jockey B has been at it for over eight years.

Disc Jockey A cost more and quoted us a price three times higher than what was on their website, while Disc Jockey B goes by their listed price.

How did you choose between live music and a disc jockey? What was the deciding factor for picking your DJ?

Wow! What great questions to ask a DJ. Some I never thought of, but are so important! What they will wear? Brilliant! You definitely want to make sure they look decent!

I just met (& booked) our DJ for the first time last night. He was great, very nice, answered all our questions & even told us stuff I would’ve never thought to ask. I wanted a DJ because live bands usually stick to one genre, & I wanted to cover everything. It’s also good because they’ll keep you on schedule, not strick & to the point “At 7 o’clock it’s cake time” but more just having somewhat of a basic schedule, like a mini-coordinator. I once went to a wedding and waited 2 1/2 hours for the celebration to start… boring! DJ will play music based on what the crowd is feeling & much more entertaining then I feel an Ipod can be. I, like you found him less expensive then anyone else I’d even looked at. He wasn’t charging me extra for any lighting or anything- everything is right there in the contract of cost & whats included, zero hidden fees ((which hello, what bride doesn’t like that!)) I am very happy with my decision & his personality fit with ours great :)

We had a consultation with our DJ. It was important to us that he had some personality and after that he mixed for us so we could actually see him in action. My advice: Make sure you hear a sample mix, live or pretaped. You would be surprised at how much it will sway you.

We’re using a full-blown entertainment company for DJ services and lighting. They know a lot more about wedding stuff than me and were really helpful in deciding what we needed!

My man and I started having the band vs dj argument when we were still teenagers talking about our someday “wedding” For real, y’all.

I’ve always been pro DJ because I always felt it was important to hear the songs we loooove as the band we love preforms them. They have so much meaning to me and vary genres so wildly that a DJ was my preference.

He wanted a band because its classier. He’s a classy fellow.

In the end, we went with a DJ because
1. I am way more into music than my FI
2. Way cheaper. Way, way cheaper. We found a wicked good DJ (who is a professional club DJ when he’s not doing weddings) at an indie marriage fair and booked him for $500. For the whole day, no time limits. GO DJ!
