About Miss Dalmatian

With a Doily on Top

October 20th, 2011 @ 7:02 am by Miss Dalmatian

Here’s the low-down on our tables: our venue provides us with either white, ivory, brown, or black tablecloths. We have decided to use the white or the ivory. (We’ll decide for sure when we see the colors at our upcoming planning meeting.) But, because I have an affinity for making things more difficult than they have to be, I’m not quite satisfied with the plain tablecloths. It’s that I want a different color, which we could get for a few extra pennies (or hundreds of dollars—not really sure which and don’t really want to find out), it’s just that I want something ON TOP of the neutral tablecloths.

At first, I imagined a patchwork runner. Something along these lines but with a little more wedding flair:

Then, I came across one of those inspiration pictures that makes you so excited you just want to jump out of your chair and hug the first person you see. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately considering the possible alternatives), I was alone in our apartment at the time. As a result, our pup Echo got some very enthusiastic pets!

So what was this brilliant idea that I so immediately and so wholeheartedly fell in love with?

Doily table toppers!

In case you are a visual person like me, here are the pictures that made my eyes widen so much they nearly popped out of my head:

Aren’t they just scrumptious? I want them on my tables, and I want them bad! Yes, I realize I sound a touch on the crazy side, but that is how much I love this idea. I consulted with my core crew (AKA, MOH K, MOH A, and Mama Dalmatian), and they agreed that the crocheted doilies would definitely add a unique, vintage flair to the tables. We analyzed the situation a little more (clearly this is VERY serious business), and here is what we landed on:

  1. I am going to make doily table toppers as opposed to doily runners. They will be more of a circle/square shape and just be in the center.
  2. I am going to find a fabric and make table squares to go underneath the doilies so that they pop a little more than they would on our white/ivory tablecloths.
  3. I may add some sort of trim to the fabric table square to incorporate some sewing/quasi-patchwork like my original idea.

Again, for us visual learners:

Personal photo / Note: I used random colors, but you get the idea!

So, is that clear as mud? I will keep you updated with pictures of my table-topper project. I am keeping my fingers crossed that as I work on the components it will evolve into the image I have in my head!

Did you come across any inspiration that you just had to have?

Are you adding any special touches to your tabletops?

Ok, I love this look and just wanted to make one runner for my dining room table. Have you found doilies anywhere? Anywhere not crazy expensive?

I would love to also know if you know where to get some inexpensive doilies….I had the awesome idea of making lace table cloths and all is well except I can’t find enough lace fabric big enough to make all of them. So I settled on a lace table cloth for my sweet heart table and doilies for the rest.

Doily tablecloths will be great!
We have about the same choices for our tablecloths - black, white, or ivory. I’m leaning towards ivory because it will make my dress look even more white.

I love this idea! I am also using Doilies but not as runners. Ebay has lots of crocheted doilies on the cheap. Good luck!

I love doily table toppers! I plan on doing this too and want to make tablecloths of darker unbleached muslin to set them off.

@candicemcc: @RizNat: Like Miss Aardvark mentioned, there are some on eBay, but I have been getting mine from the flea market and antique stores. At the flea market I can get them for about $1. At antique stores they vary a lot in price, but I set my limit at $2 (maybe $3 if it’s a really good one). Happy doily hunting!

Friends of mine that have gotten married have made the comment that IF you go white/ivory, you want to consider your wedding dress. As in, if you get white-white linens, but your dress is ivory/off-white then your dress may look dingy when you stand next to the tables (which, will be most of the night, though not most of the pictures). If your dress is white/diamond white, I wouldn’t worry about it, though!

Just another thought for you to worry about ;)
