What Color Are You?

October 20th, 2011 @ 2:09 pm by Mrs. Skunk

Our pastor requires that we meet with him a few times before the big day, but with Mr. Skunk in Madison, we’re just now getting around to it. Our pastor is actually my best friend and MOH L. Bug’s dad so I’ve known him, trusted him, and thought of him as my second dad for all of my life. I was worried it would be a little awkward, but this week we had our first session and it was actually really insightful.

For the most part, everything he asked about, we had already discussed. Finances, kids, alone time. We had it covered. And then he asked, “So why marriage? Why now?”

Up until this moment, I had been talking my head off. With this question, I turned my head and deferred to Mr. Skunk. Honestly, my answer was, “Well, why not? Nothing else makes sense to me.” And I was worried that wasn’t quite romantic enough. So Mr. Skunk answered, “Because we make sense together. She has long term goals and plans, but wants to live for the moment. I would rather have now planned out and let the future unfold. I really feel like we balance each other out.”

Awww shucks, yea…that’s what I was gonna say. That response prompted our pastor to whip our the True Colors test. You can read all about True Colors here. It’s a personality test that helps identify certain traits about you and your partner. We found out that Mr. Skunk is a gold which means that he is detail oriented, chronological, traditional, and a planner. I am an orange, which just about puts me on the other side of the spectrum. I’m flexible, spontaneous, impulsive, and realistic. Both of us are pretty strong greens as well which means we’re both logical, knowledge seeking, and inventive.

Knowing all of this though definitely sheds a lot of light on our relationship When I pack for a trip, I throw whatever looks good, unfolded, into the nearest bag. Mr. Skunk makes a list the week before and then lays it all out before choosing the correct bag and packing very efficiently. Sometimes it drives me nuts, but now that I understand that this is just who we are I can be a little more understanding. So I’ve asked him to create a list for me to pack for the honeymoon. And when we get there, our plans are free so we can take excursions on a whim!

Overall, I found the counseling really beneficial. We have one more session next week and then we’ll go get our marriage license after that! This is really happening! Have you taken the true colors test? What’s your color? Have you done any pre-marital counseling? What did you learn?

I’ve taken it twice, once at at a Yearbook workshop, oddly enough, and another at some intern program conference, and I ended up testing as an Orange closely followed by Gold both times! I wonder what the mister would score as.

We haven’t done What Color Are You? in our pre-marital sesion but it sounds interesting. I will recommend to my sweetie that we try it. We did the 5 Love Languauges which was also very helpful and information for us. You guys should check it out.
