Wrapping Up the Ladies

October 20th, 2011 @ 7:35 am by Mrs. Funnel Cake

Way back when, I mentioned I was going for a white dress and red sash combination for my bridesmaids—a very Swiss inspired choice.

…Did I ever get around to figuring out some sashes for them? Well yes, I did. But you know that means I searched all over the internet first!

There were looots of sash options to choose from.

SIL Funnel Cake liked the wide obi-reminiscent style of this luxurious sash, but we worried that it might be too long for knee-length dresses.

There were also many a cute sashes to be found on Etsy, like the simple flower sash below.

…Etsy turned me on to the idea of flower sashes in general. I mean, they are just so feminine!

There were simple alternatives like the ever popular Nimli sashes that come in a huge variety of colours.

SIL Funnel Cake also found another source of sashes at Aria when she was searching for her dress.

And what about David’s Bridal? They usually have some great deals on wedding items. These sashes are only $15!

…but I was getting more and more turned on by sashes that were a tad more than simple.

I was all set to just buy any one of these adorable affordable sashes, when I stumbled upon a blog entry from Modern Foodie about sewing your own fabric sash. Hmm. As I investigated the tutorial April followed on Modern Foodie, I thought “This looks easy.”

Uh oh. Uh oh.

You guys, after this I made a really bad decision. I went to a fabric store in Zürich to buy some test fabric to play with. That shit is expensive. Really expensive. Fabric is around $50-100 a yard in Switzerland. Or more. Whatever… just tack some more zeros to the end of your bill!

I handed the cashier what was then around the equivalent of $125 for one yard of fabric, one yard of four different ribbons and some lacy trim, for the hell of it. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but I love fabric and sewing crafts… and I just couldn’t resist the urge to try my skills at making a sash!

Did you have any DIY projects you accidentally got yourself into? Did you stick with them or change your mind and delegate?

This sounds like something I would totally do! I can hardly walk out of a fabric store for under $100 and I’m in the states! Can’t wait to see how your sashed turned out!

I am still learning that when I think to myself ‘that looks easy’ it really means that I should run in the other direction. I don’t think I have ever completed something I ‘thought’ looked easy. You are way more crafty than me should it should be nice and easy for you… can’t wait to see how they turn out :)

I’m sure they are going to come out amazing because everything you do comes out amazing (seriously… color me jealous). But you are very brave for even attempting with fabric that expensive. I was whining about $15 a yard fabric last week lol, you are giving me some healthy perspective.

OMG I can’t believe fabric is that expensive in Switzerland! But were you buying silk? Because some of the silks I’ve seen around are really expensive here in Texas too. Regardless, I hope your projects turned out well, it would be really frustrating to spend that much and have it not work out well.

Fabric stores can definitely be dangerous - I already spend so much, I can’t imagine what my total would look like with that cost/yard! I can’t wait to see what you made. I’m sure it will be worth it, and it will be extra special since you did it yourself!

I cannot believe how expensive is over there for you! Fabric stores here are bad enough. The red sashes are so striking!

OK, that is ridiculous expensive for fabric! This is one time when DIY may not have been the cheapest route. But you’ve got some great inspiration sashes! They are stunning!

@lisaelanna: I was buying a taffeta. They did have some other fabrics that were at the lower end around $50 a yard. But in general… there is absolutely no fabric in Switzerland in the $1.99-$15 range like at JoAnn Fabrics. It’s really making me think if I want to continue sewing here in the future I’ll need to start importing my fabric and supplies from abroad!

Thanks for the mention :)

How did it go with the sash? What about buying the fabric online?
