About Miss Doe

You’re KILLIN’ Me Smalls!

October 20th, 2011 @ 11:08 am by Miss Doe

Early in our engagement I made the bold proclamation that videography was not necessary. I did not see the point…I figured nobody actually watches their video, do they?

I did some research to try and convince myself that maybe videography is important. I came across a website that details a few reasons why you should hire a videographer. Here is the general outline:

  1. You forget things over the years, and video helps you to remember.
  2. Video gives you the opportunity to see things you missed.
  3. You spend lots of money on a wedding, and video gives you the chance to capture all that magic.
  4. Photography is important, but video captures movement and sound, which is nice to have for things like toasts and the first dance.
  5. Remember when Aunt Bethany video taped your family reunion? Then you go back to try and watch the video but instead you get motion sickness? A professional videographer helps avoid that.
  6. Video gives the opportunity for your kids and grandkids to experience what your wedding was like. They will probably make fun of you, but isn’t that worth it?
  7. Should we decide we want to sit down and watch the video, we would at least have that option.

What.Was.I.THINKING!

Of course, video is important if we can squeeze it into the budget. Yup, I talked myself into it.

I started contacting videographers in the area and was astounded by some of the prices. I understand that maybe we can’t afford the best videographer out there, but someone decent would be nice. Every vendor I contacted would respond back with an outrageous price. Then when I would tell them my actual budget, they would tell me they could accommodate that by excluding editing and only taping the ceremony. What is the point in that?! This was how I wanted to respond to every videographer I came across:

I even attempted trying to find someone on Craigslist…but that only led me to a bunch of creepers. After repeatedly pounding my head against a wall, I finally came across a local videographer and contacted him for pricing information. I was expecting and preparing myself for an outrageous price tag.

Instead, he emailed me a brochure with prices that were actually affordable. Not only that, but he included very important elements that we wanted, even in the cheapest packages: things such as having more than one camera, editing, and recording the entire wedding: ceremony AND reception. Everything is completely flexible, like the ability to add on extra hours for a reasonable cost.

I am so excited that we just might actually have a videographer at the wedding. I never planned on this and it was not something I thought of until recently. We will be meeting with this potential videographer very soon and if all goes well, we will hopefully be booking him.

What is your take on videography? Important or not important?

We did the videography dance too, and definitely landed on “YES ABSOLUTELY”. I considered all options from Craiglist to DIY flipcams to full blown production compaines. I was flabberghasted by the pricing - it seemed wildly expensive to get what I wanted! At the end of the day I found a terriffic videographer (and crew) that really gives a lot of bang for the buck. It’s almost as much as our photography, but I truly believe that this is going to be one of my favorite things ever, so it was well worth it. I just made cuts elsewhere ;) Can’t wait for the results!

We assigned people to video various elements of the day–ceremony, first dance, cake cutting, etc. Some day we might edit into something more finished using a program on our Mac, but right now these little snippets of home video during the wedding day are great. Really we just wanted to capture the way loved ones move and sound.

We continued to create short videos during our honeymoon and will do more home video in the future. I don’t mind that it is not professional…it is just ours and it doesn’t have to be…

First off, best post title ever - I use this expression ALL THE TIME!
Regarding videography, I have gone back in forth. I started not wanting it, then wanted it, and now am back to being okay without it. I agree that when I browsed a few, the prices were crazy! I think it is just personal opinion. It could be a really nice thing to have and look back on and share with family, but I also want to remember the wedding the way my mind edits it, and not necessarily exactly as it is on tape. Definitely pros and cons, I don’t think you can go wrong either way!

How did you come across this videographer? I find that craigslist gives that same results that you encountered and a google search yields the expensive guys. I am slightly frustrated with finding any vendors.

I am excited that we were able to squeeze video into the buget. I hope your meeting goes well! If it doesn’t have you thought of seeing if a local students would be willing to do it on the cheap? There has to be community college or something with a film class….

We didn’t see the point in a videographer either. I hate watching myself and we love photos so why did we need to spend more ridiculous money???

Well I didn’t have a single married friend who agreed with me. They all told me I’d regret it. Countless magazines/blogs I read where they asked brides what’s the one advice they’d give said “get a videographer”. It felt like they were all reading my mind! The other day I came across Mrs. Giraffe’s post (http://www.weddingbee.com/2011/09/13/why-you-need-to-hire-a-videographer/) on this topic and was instantly glad that we decided to get a videographer.

I didnt want one. It was the first thing i crossed off on all my “to do” lists, actually fun enough…when you see my wedding video he zooms up on my to do list and videographer was crossed off. I didnt think i needed it, i spent tons on the photos and thats what hangs on the walls, thats what you look at….. but then i saw a posting for a FREE videographer on craigslist..i figured..why not?! So what if i end up with a crappy video….

best decision ever

I watch that PERFECT video 100 times more then the pictures. I love love love love love it!

Now that I’m on the other side I’m so SO glad we made some compromises and stretched our budget to include it. None of our guests took video and very few took pictures. (I guess they were having too much fun?) I know I’d have some major regrets if we didn’t at least have our ceremony and toasts on video.

So many points for the title. ;) Can you tell that videographer to come over to MD so I can hire him?! I’m in the same pickle you were in. :( Boo.

@KristenGettingMarried: That’s what we did too, just made a few cuts here and there to make it happen!
@AT: That sounds like a great idea too!
@Miss Dalmatian: I totally understand what you are saying…it is a tough decision for sure!
@MissCT: This particular videographer I found through Google :)
@Miss Aardvark: That’s a great idea too! Most of the time students are just as talented if not more talented than the professionals.
@yellowshoe: Hahaha, we are in the same boat! Need it? Don’t need it? Have to have it!
@JessM10: Sent you a private message :)
@Baileyh: That is HILARIOUS! Oh my goodness, too funny! Great story :)
@Mrs. Macarons: Thanks for the reassurance Mac :)
@Miss Fox: haha, unfortunately you wouldn’t want this one..it didn’t turn out well. New post coming soon to explain haha.

I am so glad everyone liked my Sandlot quote! I quote that movie like crazy! :)

First of all, I adore the Sandlot reference. It perfectly captures how I felt 99% of the time while planning the wedding (OK, that’s an exaggeration…not really…). And I’m so glad it looks like you may be able to squeeze in videography. It’s so hard to splurge on that, especially since so many packages are already set in terms of what you get, which may not be what you want. But I’m crossing my fingers for you, Miss Doe!

Haha awesome reference! We used to say that ALLLLL the time. I’m so glad you were able to make it work! Sadly, our compromise would have been, like, “No DJ or photographer” or “only food for half the people coming” ;) No videography for us, but I’m comforting myself with stuff like, “My parents didn’t have it!”

I wasn’t that interested in video, but felt we needed to get it. I’m so glad we did! My only regret was not splurging a little mroe on a better videographer, but we still love our video.
