Or in our case, the playbooks look a little more like this:

So, we have our church. It was time to figure out what was going to happen inside of the church!

I’ve heard that many brides feel limited by a religious ceremony that narrows down their choices. I’m kind of thankful. Picking between acceptable options is still a lot of decision making! There were so many, we had to develop a strategy. Mr. Raccoon and I went through the sections and picked the options we liked and the options we preferred not to have by ourselves. After that was done, we compared our answers to find the overlapping ones in the “would like to have” category. If you’re having a Catholic ceremony and are still bummed that you can’t walk down the aisle to the Runaways song “Cherry Bomb” (or something as equally out there), you can come back and thank the church later after you’ve had some time to think about it. I’ll give a quick run down in case you’re looking for some ideas or are interested!

  • First we chose the opening prayer. It’s simple, sweet, and short, asking for God’s blessing and help strengthening our love for each other.
  • Our first reading will be Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31, A Virtuous Woman.
  • The Psalm will be The Lord Is Compassionate.
  • The second reading is Colossians 3:12-17. “And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.”
  • The Alleluia Verse is 1 John 4:12. “If we love one another, God remains in us and his love is brought to perfection in us.”
  • The Gospel selection is Mark 10:6-9. “They are no longer two, but one flesh.”
  • The next section we have options for is the consent. We’ve chosen to use the slightly different version that says “to love and honor all the days of our lives” instead of “until death do us part.”
  • The next goal is to write prayers of the faithful. Personally written was the ideal and none in our books really turned our cranks.

Now there are still a lot of things left to cover, but some things need to be a surprise, right?

If you’d like to see what some of our other options were or need more ideas for yourself, you can check out CatholicWeddingHelp.com or ForYourMarriage.org. Very helpful sites!

How did you pick your readings?

Anyone else getting familiar with another faith while planning?

This is really interesting. Neither Mr. Dalmatian nor I are religious, so we don’t really have any constraits on the ceremony. I think this is definitely a blessing and a curse! We haven’t even started looking at readings, vows, etc. Perhaps I should get on that. It sounds like yours will be a beautiful ceremony!

We have the same book. I thought it was really helpful. I’m not catholic, but my soon-to-be-hubby is. So even for someone who has NO idea how the service works… it made it really simple to pick which ones to use. (I mainly voted for the shortest ones.. lol) Your readings all sound really nice!

Our church is non-demoninational and our Pastor is super easy going which means we can build our ceremony from scratch. You are right, it’s way stressful having so many choices!

It took us a week to write our prayers of the faithful, but I really liked that we wrote our own.

Thanks for sharing this! I’m sure a lot of brides will find this so helpful! We wanted a Scriptural passage that wasn’t 1 Corinthians 13 (c’mon, the Bible talks about love in a lot of other places!). And then we chose a passage from Anne of Avonlea. Simple and sweet!
