Finding a Dress to Fit the Curves

October 21st, 2011 @ 5:48 am by Miss Doily

Now that I have admitted my shortcoming of a wedding dress, I have begun the search for that perfect dress. During that search I have realized quite a few things. One, is that a dress may look beautiful and glamorous, but there is a chance that the shape of the dress just won’t work for your body type. Another is that what you love on paper is not necessarily what you will end up loving on you.

I’m a curvy girl—I have more curves than a coastal highway. My grandmother often teases me that I have a “va-va-voom” figure because I’m all hourglass. I think that my Jazzercise outfit from an ’80s party I attended perfectly accentuates my curvaceous body (PS, you can’t see, but I totally had leg warmers on too):

Keeping this in mind, I want to find a dress that will flaunt my curves while being everything that I want in a dress. What is it that I want in a dress?

Something simple, something classic and vintage looking, and something that highlights my curves without overstepping the sex appeal.

I think that I need to keep it simple with formfitting cuts and find dresses that hit me in the right places. One such cut would be a fit and flare gown, such as this:

This would allow for my curves to be hugged and to fit my body in a flattering manner. In this particular dress, there is pleating across the midsection which would also help flatter my tummy (and by flatter, I mean hide the little sucker). The trumpet-like cut hugs all of the best parts of my curves! I don’t know if I would be brave enough (especially when considering comfort) to try a mermaid cut dress, but never say never!

Another silhouette that works really well with a curvy figure is a gown with an a-line skirt, such as this one:

As you can see, it hugs the curves in the right spots and is flattering…plus it’s a very classic silhouette, just like I wanted.

There are some things that they always tell curvier girls like me to stay away from: empire waist gowns, ball gowns, and sheath cuts. These cuts usually make you look unbalanced because it’s cutting you off in really awkward places. I’ll definitely be keeping this these things in mind when finally trying on the multitude of wedding dresses that are about to head my way. I figure it will help me from getting overwhelmed if I stick to these few cuts of dresses.

What are some things that you have heard about your body type? Did you find it difficult to find a dress because of that? Did you follow the “rules,” or was your dress one of the ones that they told you to stay away from?

I’d say the golden rule is to try on anything a consultant pulls for you. There’s a reason they suggest those dresses; they’ve seen hundreds of brides and know what works and what doesn’t. Just try to let go of any preconceptions and enjoy the ride, you may be surprised at what looks good on you!

I really like both of the examples you showed! I think Mermaid dresses are HAWT…. and really glamorous. On the other hand A-lines are so pretty and classic. Can’t wait to see what you pick!!

I think both styles would look great on you, can’t wait to see what you chose! And, for the record, I think sheath gowns look good on very, very few people. Trying one on was the death of my confidence while dress shopping, that’s for sure.

Hi Miss Doily! As a fellow curvey girl I was pretty mortified about the entire dress shopping experience… will it fit.. won’t it fit.. do they have dresses in sizes bigger than 2 at the salon?.. I wanted vintage, classic, curve hugginess but I didnt wnat to look like a sausage in silk :) . I tried on both silos that you mentioned above… a line and fit and flare and LOVED them both. I know that you will too. If it’s vintage you want then I reccomend the fit and flare. I ended up with a champage colored fit and flare.. so its like antiqued silk lovliness ( you can see it in my gallery). It also tightened in the waiste… kept the girls in check (so important as I dont want my boobs being the center of my wedding) and made me feel great. I can’t wait to see what you pick!

I love the fit and flare. I’m a curvy lady like yourself and the fit and flare is what made me feel beautiful and classy but still hot!

@Oxfordnerd: I definitely agree with you! Normally I want to resist sales people just for the sake of wanting to pick things myself, but I think there are some amazing bridal consultants out there who really know their stuff. Case in point - the one dress my consultant picked out ended up being the one!

And Miss Doily, you look hot in that jazzercise outfit and I’m sure you will look even hotter (in a classy way, of course) in your wedding dress! Can’t wait to see what you choose!

As a fellow curvy girl, I agree with you!!! I actually tried on the first dress that you posted from DB and that was my favorite out of the 8 I tried on. I especially loved the corset back (not sure if that’s the same one)!

I’m going to keep looking but please do keep us posted on your dress hunt!

I’m just like you… LOVE the line about the coastal highway! lol. (I might have to steal that) I tried on everything… even the suuuuper tight… to the suuuper puffy! I wanted to try EVERY kind of style. Once we narrowed it down to one type of style… the rest just flowed easily. We went to big department store first… then once we found my style… we went to the smaller stores. Good luck! And you’ll look amazing in anything!!!

I HIGHLY suggest a corset back, as well. Though, some dresses have “internal corsets” that you then zip up & over if there’s a button back. Anyways, the point is, this allows you a lot more room to customize (even with fittings) that dress to each & ever curve/angle of your body. Cinch in that waist!!!

Seriously, I dropped 10lbs when I put my dress on.

Being a plus size, all I ever heard was that I ’should’ buy an a-line gown.. but I went against the grain to buy a mermaid. Best decision I ever made!

I didn’t even go into my first shopping experience with a list of ‘what not to try on.’ I just tried what I thought was pretty. In the end, the A-line, corset back is what I ended up with but you never know! You are going to rock those curves!

I tried following the rules and then threw them out the wedding. The one dress I did not think would be flattering on me, turned out to be my dress and looked the most flattering on me! Really though, you cannot go wrong with a-lines!

I love all your curves, Miss D! They are so beautiful! And it’s so nice to see such a positive post embracing your body and trying to show it off at your wedding (as you should–gorgeous!).

@Miss Dalmatian: Yep, I had exactly the same experience, I frowned at the dress when she brought it in, thinking ‘really??’. Cue happy tears a mere 2 mins later….

I bought (and rocked) that first dress. I’m all kinds of petite and athletic. I joke that I’m a size 6 on top and a 0 in the booty (somehow I never really got a booty). I figured I’d go A-line or empire (supposedly good for petites) and the consultant brought in that dress. I was meh on it but tried it on. MAN did I look good. It flattered my top while hugging my hips and giving me just the right amount of curves. I got so many compliments. And it was really comfortable. The only thing I would change? I would have had cups sewn in instead of wearing a bra. The boning rubbed after 10 hours. :)

@futuremrsbrunell: I definitely had those same fears! I decided to fight through it, and I am so happy I just dove in. Curvy girls unite!
@Mrs. Pony: I agree with the sheath comment, I mean we can’t all be Pippas. Darn her and her slim, flawless figure ;)

@Claire:

@Ms.Bookworm: I really love the way they look too! So classy! Fingers crossed that it looks great to me!

@Miss Dalmatian: Thanks! I felt pretty hot in that Jazzercise outfit. Ah the good days when it was perfectly acceptable to have theme parties.

@cancanny: That is what I am aiming for! I want a dress that doesn’t pile on the pounds and emphasizes what the good lord gave me.

@Mrs. Jaguar: And you looked stunning in it! I’m totally going to try one on just to say I did.

@Miss Sunhat: @Miss Doe: I’m all for the a-lines. That was all of my dresses in high school!

@Mrs. Parasol: You are so sweet! Curvy girls need to rock that stuff!

@Oxfordnerd: I am going to try to ignore my type-A tendancies and let the consultant guide me in the direction. Hopefully I can, but it’s hard to let control go ;)
